Cleveland Rock Radio in 2012

Nothing surprises me in Cleveland radio and TV. I am shocked that Adam the Bull was able to get a job at 92.3 doing sports talk. It is darn near impossible in this town for anybody new to break into the business whether it is from another market or even Akron/Canton working their way up. This area is obsessed with the same 30 names over and over. ;D

Yes. It is a sorry state of affairs. Bull coming to Cleveland is a result of the NYC based CBS radio trying to insure success with a risky venture. Adam is good and THAT decision was made in NYC, not here.

Radio places too much importance on name familiarity, rather than good content.

Nobody " new " breaks in because stations no longer have part time positions. No assitant productions directors who do on air weekends, learn the craft and grow and polish their acts. Even if radio did do this, the veteran talent to mentor, teach and nuture just got fired because they " make too much money " or are busy voice tracking 5 other stations. Thanks FCC. Thanks telecom bill.

So what are we left with? Refugee air talent that hasn't worked in years, scraping for few bucks to earn a living ( see Rocco...Hanson...etc ).

Now since The Wave will be using Goddard for weather, maybe they can rebrand Dorothy Fuldheim with some "Wave flashbacks " using her old audio clips :D ?
They would also post old Jane Scott concert reviews on the website too!

What is BLF Bash doing anyway? Maggot Brain after all is jazz fusion, isn't it? ;)

Wonderful. Goddard is going to be doing the weather on 107.3? I thought you were kidding LOL. Maybe we can have Del Donahoo break out a few Del Folks. If Tom Haley were not dead I would say why not Tom and Del do the Today in Cleveland show with Henry the Rooster. Fred Griffith can handle the midday shift and we can bring Don Webster out of retirement for afternoon drive. The people in this town would be so excited that you could voice track Dorothy Fuldheim from the grave as you said ;D.

Isn't Milt Maltz still alive too? Maybe he could have bought 107.3

Yes. Perhaps someone can persuade him to get his checkbook out and call Rubber Radio......make them an " offer they can't refuse " ! ;D

I forgot about Don Webster! WOW! What was I thinking? He could do Big Five Show Friday Flashbacks!

Man I hope Rubber Radio is getting all this. We should send them an invoice! ;)

If Bernie Kimble comes back to the WAVE I will be 100% convinced that the radio business is dead.

He's out of the radio business for good. But not of his own choice.

It's really nice to see you mocking someone who has had to deal with a brain tumor since 2002, and has had to endure extensive surgery and years of recuperation.

You are a despicable lout.

Nate,

Are some of these people actually worth the time to address? In the next few weeks, they will be looking for something, or someone else to mock. Or I'll rub one of them the wrong way. They will prove how big their johnson is by writing anonymous comments on my blog.

Capulet: Nope, they did do a research project. Other stations do this all the time even when they have no intention of changing formats....just trying to keep the pulse of their station (s) and get out ahead of any changes developing in the market.

But, remember...in any format change in just about any market...the research is much more than just about format holes and music testing. It's about revenue potential, market demographics, psychographics, population trends, comparison of similar formats in similar markets, and so forth.

And, every company who buys another company looks at financials going back 5 or 10 years (or longer)...that's typical in any type of business transaction...not just radio and TV stations.

Adding to Tim's EXCELLENT point:

Rubber City put together several audio demos for potential formats. Included were alt-rock, AAA (a wholesale reboot: new personalities, playlist, presentation), pure smooth jazz and smooth AC.

The decision to go with smooth AC was made two weeks ago.

Thom and Nick sought after 107.3 for over a year. But to say that they bought it all along to bring back "The Wave" is not only a bold-faced lie, it is outright absurd.

It's different here, Cliff.

I've worked alongside Bernie, off and on, for the past two years after he was kicked off of The Wave. He at least has a job as a media instructor at LCCC, and is helping train new people that want to enter radio (alongside former WNWV overnight host Starr D'Avril). But he's not going to be able to reenter commercial radio for a long time, if ever.

So, yeah... I consider Capulet's sick insult at Bernie more of a personal and pointed attack on someone I know. I don't consider Bernie to be a saint, but he's a human being.

Ok I did not know that the man had a brain tumor. I apologize for that. I was doing it in fun because as I have said before I really would like to see some new talent in the area. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

As far as writing anonymous comments on 74WIXYGrad's blog sorry to burst your bubble but I had no idea you have a blog so if that comment was directed towards me it was misdirected.

Apology accepted. I apologize for going off in the manner I did. Just hit a very deep, and sour, note.

He's doing better. The fact he's trying to help develop new radio talent is pretty cool in itself. LCCC established a radio curriculum in 2008 (in part for transfer purposes with four-year universities like BW or John Carroll), and took their internet radio station out of the student club department and into the arts & humanities department last year.

They are flying in the face of the decline of the industry... the true shame is they will likely never get a terrestrial signal of any sort.

I get your point Nate. It was just starting to look like a certain other discussion board here.

And CleveRadioInsider, I wasn't trying to single you out. Basically I'm just your run of the mill radio geek who went to broadcasting school when Marconi was teaching the courses. I participate in both boards. On the Cleveland.com board, I sent out a congratulatory message to Mark Ribbins, who was named one of the new personalities on The Wave. From what I have heard, Mark is a real good guy, has posted over there as XRadioPro and never participated in the endless amount of pissing contests there. One of the sport talk critics on that board, decided to insult my character. I answered that and this morning someone went to the comments section of my blog and decided to question my faith. According to my site meter, the comment came from Broadview Hts. So I assumed, maybe wrongly, that it came from a message board poster.

And yes, maybe we want to hang on to memories too long. Some of the mockery on this thread contained humor, some didn't.
It may be up to people like John Basalla to maybe give us the past in small doses with some of his efforts.

Some of the "I was right and you were wrong" repetition has gotten beyond old. Did I want V107.3 to succeed? Yes,because I had friends who were loyal listeners. Do I understand why it didn't? Yes, $$$$$$$$$$$. And where is my dial set to in the morning as I drive to work? 94.9. Wynn and Wilson have good chemistry, I can get traffic reports when I need them and I like the music. If I want classic rock, I'll listen to Tim Daugherty. I consider Tim a friend, mainly because of our crossing paths in press boxes during high school football season. There's even a video on youtube of a band show in which you can hear Tim talking to me in the background. I like Tim because he is the consummate radio geek. So yes I do have friends in radio, but I hardly worship the ground they walk on. Would I want someone to offer me a part time job doing voiceover work? Am I holding my breath? No.

People like hearing familiar voices and I'm no exception. But knowing enough about the broadcasting business to know little and making the contacts which I have made makes me realize that radio is a good business to get into if you don't like to eat. And I think about that whenever I'm told whenever I'm doing my job that I should be in radio. I talked to one person a few months ago who told me that he was taken by surprise by how far he had gotten in radio, but had never really considered it a career. This person came looking for me at a band show. He also sent me a message through Facebook when he heard I broke my ankle in October.

Basically, for most people in the business, and for those around here not named Trivisonno and Lanigan, an air shift in radio is a business card for your talents to use in the future.

Sheesh, all this because someone attacked my faith..

And I crossed the line with my assumptions...sorry

I also was unaware of any health issues. Was just having some fun cracking jokes on line. Hope he's okay.

The labels are not cranking out rock product like 10, 15 years ago. They know there are little or no stations relying on this product for thier format identity. In the early 2000s Extreme 92.3 playing nu-metal was the last of the mohicans to rely on that type of " current " product.

The labels now focus on developing pop, country, hip hop/R&B acts because these radio formats exist in multiples that sustain the release of music in these genres. Said differently, why release rock product when there is no current radio radio stations (so to speak) which to market this genre?

Rock music stations will live off classic rock from the 70s and whatever you want to call the rock music from the 80s and 90s for decades to come.
This should insure Michael Stanley's DJ career for some time. :D

Other than Howad Stern's decade of dominance of morning drive for the rockers, WNCX was and is one of thee dullest stations ever in the history of this market. Yet that " classic rock " position is one CBS will not relinquish.

You have a good point Capulet. Alternative seems to be falling by the wayside more and more. Less good product is coming out, with very few songs getting tons of airplay like Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" being played on KISS-FM and Q104. Not enough is grabbing attention nowadays, and plus, more people would prefer the hits from the 80's through the early 2000's.

Perhaps there will be a comeback down the line, but for now Cleveland has WNCX, WMMS, college radio and the internet for rock sources. Not to mention The Summit and WONE out of Akron too.

I did see that a station in Columbus flipped from '90s Hits to Modern AC with an Alternative-heavy playlist. Could a station like that work in Cleveland. I'd like to see it on 98.1 out of Akron. It also comes in fairly well in most of Cleveland, and can also serve the big cities along I-77 (Cleveland, Akron and Canton).

WKDD is a heritage station, but their format and playlist can be heard on WAKS and WQAL out of Cleveland, WDJQ and WHBC-FM out of Canton and WHOT out of Youngstown. Basically, Akron has SIX stations that are programmed with either the Top 40 or Hot AC format, though those five just mentioned are not Akron-based. Yet, WKDD doesn't really seem to be an Akron-focused station anymore. Much less localism there nowadays. Heck, WAKS does better in the ratings than WKDD. I guess to some Akron-area listeners, the city a station is based out of doesn't really matter.

They should go to a Modern AC/Alternative Rock heavy format since WENZ when they were The End did really well in Akron, and that city has The Summit and WSTB 88.9 as well. It can be Akron-based and Akron-centric, but can also target Cleveland and Canton too. I'd certainly listen that's for sure.

WKDD in the 1980s and 1990s was truly a great station. Right now I believe someone mentioned that is has about 3 hours of live programming on the air. Too bad.

If that. They also share the Premium Choice Hot AC music log. Flip between 98.1 and 105.3 (WYHT out of Mansfield) and it's virtually identical.

Sad.

Ironically alternative formats have the same problem 55+ targeted formats have in 2011: national/larger advertisers aren't that interested in reaching their listeners.

It's consumers, especially women, in their mid 20's to late 40's (even early 50's) who virtually everybody wants.

As maddening as that is to people who aren't hearing their favorite music on the radio, there's a pretty logical reason why that is: advertisers want what they want...formats who's consumers they believe have the most money to spend on their products/services.
