Cleveland TV Revolving Door

WOIO/WUAB is looking for someone else to take over as news director. The current one, Ian Rubin, is taking on a new position with Gray, the owners of 19/43.

Kelly Dobeck is the new morning co-anchor on the WOIO portion of "19 News This Morning."

Also, WOIO-WUAB-WTCL has promoted Brian Sinclair from Assistant News Director to the main News Director.

Kelly had been a Swiss Army knife on the morning show - a little weather, a little traffic, and a little news - so officially naming her co-anchor now gives everyone a clear role

Shannon Smith/Kelly Dobeck - anchors
Jeff Tanchak - weather
Jamie Sullivan - traffic

Even when Cleveland was a "major market" for radio and TV, on air folks were still leaving for larger markets.
Not back in the mid-50's when Cleveland was national market #8.

Homa Bash, who had been weekend morning anchor for WEWS ABC 5 for the last few years, is leaving to take a job in Washington DC.

She hadn't been on TV 5 for awhile any way as she has been on maternity leave after recently having a baby.

Bryn Caswell - herself a recent addition from WKEF ABC 22 in Dayton - had been getting most of the reps in fill-in duty during Bash's leave, and would seem to be next girl up to take the post full time.

WKYC definitely seems to be beefing up its staff. They seem to be more competitive against WJW than the other two stations. WOIO seems to become the invisible in the market.

Speaking of WKYC, Neil Fisher appears to be the the new weekend evening anchor.

Yes and no.

He does Saturdays now and then, with Lynna Lai still on Sunday.

WJW Fox 8 gets one anchor back while losing another.

Evening anchor Elizabeth Noreika has returned from maternity leave, but morning anchor Stefani Schaffer is now on the shelf after tearing her hamstring (ouch!) while doing yard work at her home.

Poor thing. If she need someone to come over to massage her hamstring, I would be willing to volunteer.

"The List" - a light hearted social media/trending topics show produced by Scripps and syndicated nationally - including on WEWS ABC 5 at 7p - has been cancelled.

WEWS is replacing it with "The Debrief" - a nightly newscast originating from and also airing on Scripps News (the network seen on - not technically, but for all intents and purposes is - sister station WVPX 23.3).

This basically is played up by WEWS as a new 4-8p news block

4-6:30 - News 5 (local)
6:30 - ABC World News Tonight
7 - The Debrief (Scripps News)
7:30 - Access Hollywood (celebrity news)

Factoring in local, national, network, and (if you stretch it) celebrity news shows, the 4 TV newsrooms in town now have lengthy afternoon/early evening news blocks

WKYC NBC 3 - 3-8p (local except for NBC News Daily at 3, NBC Nightly News at 6:30, and Entertainment Tonight at 7:30)
WEWS ABC 5 - 4-8p (detailed above)
WJW Fox 8 - 4-7:30p (all local)
WOIO CBS 19 - 3-7p (local except for CBS Evening News at 6:30)

Stef has now since returned, having came back a couple of weeks ago

WEWS would have been better off running a local newscast at 7pm instead of another Scripps show.
It helps plug the Scripps News network, so there's the method to that madness.

Also speaking of TV 5 they just announced that Damon Maloney - who had been a morning news anchor at WOIO from 2019-2022 - is going to be the full time weekend AM news anchor, and do reporting during the week.
