Coast to Coast AM with(out) Art Bell

Art is semi-retiring again... he's backing off to two episodes of Coast to Coast AM per month, both Saturdays. Ian Punnett (in Minneapolis) will fill Sundays and Hilly Rose will fill some Saturdays with best-of shows otherwise.

Wow, you remember that debacle?

Anybody care about Art Bell anymore? Can't do 4 shows a month?

Nate-FYI: Mike Siegel Web Site, morning drive on AM 770 KTTH Seattle (Entercom):

Veteran radio talk host in the Seattle market for at least ~18 years on several stations...Brian Jennings built 570 KVI / Seattle in the early '90's with Rush, Colmes, Farber, Siegel, Laura Lee, etc. Jennings and KVI ~ten year ago acheived 12+ ratings much higher than any of the Seattle-Tacoma market talk ratings currently released today (6/30/05) that appear on radio and records on-line...

from the web site:

"...December 1972 at WEIM (Fitchburg MA). Since that beginning he has worked in major markets including Miami (WNWS, WGBS); New York (WMCA, WRBC, WOR); Boston (WBZ, WHDH, WRKQ, WITS, WBOS-FM); Seattle (KING, KIRO, KVI); St. Louis (KMOX, KTRS); freelance in Cleveland (WWWE); Washington, D.C. (WWRC) and several other smaller market radio stations....etc."

I always found Art's voice to be gentle and soothing at 3:00 in the morning, lightly chatting about topics that I'd only want to listen with Art when it's the middle of the night, and we're talking about supernatural powers, or natural causes.

Whatever, we knew it was near an end for Art anyway, so at least we saw it before now.

Who says it's the end? He was only working a part-time schedule anyway. Now he's working even less of a part-time schedule. You know, he and his wife own a radio station and they like to travel (especially this time of year). I'm sure he's not cutting back on his on-air C2C schedule because he has no interest in it anymore. More than likely, he's cutting back his on-air C2C schedule due to other pursuits/interests at this time. I have a feeling that Art Bell will always be around. Like many of us here on this board, he loves radio too much to just walk away from it for good. It's in his blood--he has said that many times, and I believe him.

I have no doubt that Mike's a good guy. But he didn't fit at all with C2C and the type of show it is - Art was forced to come back to the air because of it, lest it ended up like "America at Night."

I remember reading about him getting the KVI gig some time back, and for that I wish him the best.

I always turn off the radio or twist the dial when a substitute host comes on.

As for Babs Simpson, I could bever understand why she led off her show with a weather report.. I thought that was the STUPIDEST thing I ever heard..

Last but not least, the comment about Art Bell comming back..The PD at KFI Los Angeles called him up and asked him if he would do a local weekend show, and he agreed to go back nationwide.. CC/Premier jumped at the opportunity and Robin Bertalucci (sp?) scored a coup as the new PD for KFI.

Ian Punnet is an ordained minister.. Expect Arbi's to crash as Art Bell weans himself out again.. But then again, who really listens to weekend radio?
______________

Re: punnet ego

I think Art Bell has had more retirements than the Eagles have had farewell tours. Barbara Simpson and the weather..I don't know, maybe giving some competition for the Truckin' Bozo show (now "American Truckers Network").
______________

You know something? I don't listen to the "truckin' guys" that much at night. But I have to say, I do admire the concept behind that show! An overnight radio show for truckers! What a great idea that was/is! I mean, after all, nationwide, what other group of people (in really large numbers) are up all night and are out on the road with nothing to do and nobody else to talk to....but truckers??!! And it's a radio show that's geared (no pun intended) primarily, though not entirely, for truckers. And them truckin' hosts talk about everything that's going on in the world, not just regional weather reports and interstate road conditions. I'll tell ya, somebody deserves a big pat on the back for coming up with the idea for that radio show way back when!

It's all in the voice...

They really need to get some new talent in there. What an insipid week it was on C to C, Hilly Rose and Ian Punnet just don't have the voice for the job. When I hear them on I won't listen. We need to go back to the days when there was a tournament of fill-ins, that's how Art found George Noory.

Speaking of which, one fill-in years ago started the show with a long boring prerecorded diatribe about how great America was complete with patriotic music and prose recitation. Needless to say that was his first and last appearance. Does anyone remember that episode? Who was that weirdo and why did Art think he had the right stuff?
______________

Re: Overnight hosts...

Anybody know what happened to Herb Jepco?

He was on the overnight Mutual show in the mid 70's.

Before that, the overnight host of note was Long John Nebel who has since passed away.

Punnet does a good job on the weekends. I enjoy hearing him.

Noory is also good.

The show has developed into more than just a show about the paranormal. There's many general-interest topics covered as well.

I do miss the days when LARRY KING had his overnight show.
