Comical legal station IDs

From about 20 years ago: "This is K-E-S-Z, Phoenix. But you can drop the S and call us 99.9 K-E-Z."

I also remember the Z-100 ID buried between spots back in the day. "Malrite Communications, WHTZ Newark New York City." Spoken quickly enough it comes across as New York New York.

On the other side of the border, I don't think I ever heard XHITZ-Tijuana ever spell out their call sign the entire time I lived in San Diego. They'd just say "Zeta Noventa, Baja California, Mexico." Now that it's no longer Califormula, they spell it out: "equis-hache-eee-te-zeta, Tijuana Baja California, Mexico" sped up so fast in Pro Tools that it blows by you in about a second and a half.

Mix 96 WMIX this, and Mix 96 WMIX that, and Mix 96 WMIX the other thing,
and then the biggie on the top of the hour, Mix 96 WMIX is WMMX, Baltimore.

When channel four divested of 980 AM radio and the legacy radio call letters were dropped,

"You're listening to the Station of the Stars, wWRC, Washington"

(under loud instrumental music)

Too late to edit...that should have been "Mix 106 WMIX is WWMX Baltimore".

The River 105.9 (Variety Hits) of Hartford barely acknowledges their legal ID, burying it in a stop set at roughly XX:50. (It's WHCN-FM.)

WWYZ-FM 92.5 (Country) and WMRQ-FM 104.1 (Modern Rock) are both licensed to Waterbury, but have always said it as Waterbury/Hartford. The only actual dual city license in this market is WKSS-FM 95.7 (Top 40) of Hartford/Meriden. WRCH-FM 100.5 (A/C) of New Britain has always their ID sung as "WRCH...New Britain...Hartford".

WZMX-FM 93.7 (Hip Hop/Urban) of Hartford has been HOT 93.7 since winter/spring 2001. The call letters go back their old A/C format as The New Mix 93.7 of the early 1990s.

The late Ernie Anderson (The "Golden Throat" of ABC television) once did the legal for WTIC-FM 96.5 (Hot A/C) of Hartford in their Top 40 days as "You're on 96...WTIC-FM...Hartford's Better Music Variety!")

WDRC-FM 102.9 of Hartford (Classic Rock) has the wrong legal ID nearly every hour. The 102.9 The Whale voice over guy says "WDRC, WDRC HD 1 Hartford". It would be fine if there wasn't also sister station WDRC-AM 1360 of Hartford.

How are any of these IDs "comical"? This thread is in danger of drifting far off topic into a boring recitation of call letters, cities and frequencies. If nobody can come up with any more amusing legal IDs, then just let the thread die. It's OK, really.

Years ago I heard a story (possibly apocryphal) about a station in the Sioux City market, that was licensed to some little burg in Nebraska. On their ID cart, they recorded the spoken city of license out of phase. Full sing "Sioux City!" and everything else was in phase.

Anybody listening on a mono radio heard only the Sioux City part. The FCC was not amused.

I don't remember who the PD was at the time, but when I worked there back in about 1985 (part time) there was a sign on the wall that read: "double ewe M eye X" He hated it when anyone would "dubba you"

Seattle market rimshot called "The Funky Monkey" active rock station that at one time made fun of it's COL. (Big booming radio voice) "KFNK Eatonville" (Regular guy voice) "Eatonville???" (Big Booming Voice, sounding sheepish) "Eatonville. Yeah, I know..."

Portland OR market 107.5 is licensed to Banks OR. When it was branded as The Beat the legal was "KBBT Banks on Portland keeping the beat."

KGW used to require it but instead of "double ya". They even had a bumper sticker that spelled out, "Sixty-two, Kay Gee Double-you".

I actually thought of, "KBBT Banks on Portland for listeners." but never told anyone. I had no idea they had a similar ID until just now!

semoochie; said:

I almost like yours better. Might come off as a little needy, but hey...ain't too proud to beg.

They also could have tied it to a contest: "KBBT Banks open, be caller number 105 for your chance to win..."

Some I remember hearing:

Serving more of Alabama than the Governor, this is WKXN/WKXK. (From a few years back, when they were known as The Big Station)

98 Surf FM, Reaches the Beaches, rocks the docks and shakes the lakes. (From the late 80s Fort Walton Beach/Andalusia area radio station)

You're listening to P-P-Power Hits Kicks 106 Birmingham. (Back when they were mixing Top 40 with Urban, in the 80s)

WGAR, Cleveland (the version on 1220), inserted someone's name into the ID every hour for a day. I'm told it often was a sales prospect.
"1220 WGAR, Cleveland. A Ralph Smith station".
