Coming soon... K-EARTH 101 streaming live in September!

Jack Garrett said:
Has anyone noticed the mouse click SFX that comes up at or near the end of an element? What's up with that??

hopefully just a glitch...as it's still the beta version.
KRTH website promotes "streaming in XX days" for a Monday launch.

I listened to KRTH for an hour Saturday night on the stream. The audio seems to be straight off the board (or close to it) - lifeless and weak. I like the "playing the greatest hits on Earth" line - sad that they seem to play the same well-tested 500 records.

I listened for a while this evening around 6pm PT and it sounds fine to me. If what I heard is lifeless and weak I will take that compared to overprocessed and having the dynamic range squeezed to death for loudness.

A tad disappointing, IMHO....

The stream sounds pretty good, the music mix is "ultra-safe" (of course), and the removal of the local spots makes it sound silly. But hey, better to have K-Earth online than not!

How can they need to "test" and "get rid of bugs?" Streaming audio is not exactly brain science?

Probably, CBS is getting ready to dump the KRTH oldies and satisfy its current fans with a WCBS-FM style feed.

How sad.

FM radio becomes more like AM every day.

The pre-stream promo ..... comes ....... in ........half .......sentences ..... because ...... I ...... suspect .... the ..... server ......not ....... handling ........de mand.

If they can't handle the volume, I'd dump the pre-stream . Station audio stream itself is fine....

First, learn not to post in all caps.

Second, since I have XM lets set some things straight. One, Clear Channel formats on XM DO have commercials so XM is not commercial free on its music channels. Also, XM doesn't guarantee that all its channels will always be there. It has dumped a number of channels over the years - most recently MSNBC and a sports channel was gutted.

Third, actually Sirius has been gaining in satellite subscriptions and on XM. Sirius isn't doing great and XM isn't doing nearly as well as them. XM has scheduled a new campaign for the fall and holiday season. If this doesn't lift them, then I think the next step will be a merger with Sirius (something we will probably see with the two satellite tv providers next year, also).

Also, XM can't ever be local enough on its music channesl to tell me it's raining on the 405 and it's coming to the 605. That remains what local, live radio can do. Now if only local broadcasters who just want to cut costs by V-Ting would learn that.

What will revolutionize radio is the (soon) coming of live streaming radio in your car and on portable devices - NOT XM (or Sirius).

Bingo. And the smart radio companies better be ready to ride the wave with the highest quality audio streams they can put up. And the more the merrier.

Right now, the only XM I can get are the channels they carry over DirecTV. The one I really dug was the prog rock channel -- Music Lab. But that one went away, to be replaced by yet another flavor of classic rock. I suppose for devotees of really niche formats that could be frustrating, and seems to go against the very appeal XM might have for music fans looking for formats they can't get on terrestrial radio.

----> One, Clear Channel formats on XM DO have commercials so XM is not commercial free on its music channels.

Those formats are duplicated 100 percent commercial free. You sound like an NAB sock puppet.

----->Also, XM doesn't guarantee that all its channels will always be there. It has dumped a number of channels over the years - most recently MSNBC and a sports channel was gutted.

They were replaced after audience surveys showed infintessimal ratings. No one WATCHES MSNBC, how many tens or dozens were listening? And the sports channel that was "gutted" was replaced by a better one, with more XM-original material.

---->Third, actually Sirius has been gaining in satellite subscriptions and on XM.

Howard Stern bump.

---->Sirius isn't doing great and XM isn't doing nearly as well as them.

They;'re both on the road to profitability.

-----> a merger with Sirius (something we will probably see with the two satellite tv providers next year, also).

FCC will never allow either.

----->Also, XM can't ever be local enough on its music channesl to tell me it's raining on the 405 and it's coming to the 605.

So what? "Local" radio in most markets isn't local enough for that, either. Most "local" content on "local" radio is the sales manager doing a remote from a car dealer on a cellphone on Saturday.... boy, howdy, I can't wait to hear that in IBOC stereo.

---->That remains what local, live radio can do.

yeah, 18 minutes of commercials an hour.

----->What will revolutionize radio is the (soon) coming of live streaming radio in your car and on portable devices - NOT XM (or Sirius).

Show me just exactly how that is going to work. Streaming audio on a hard-wired computer is one thing, but a moving target, with cellular reception issues?

iPods and sat radio adapters in cars are here, now, and comparatively cheap.

Wow thanks for your assistance Mostb1 I took care of the caps as for XM I listen to the 60 s and 70s channel, and its commercial free never a commercial!!!!! For 12.95 a month you get Phlash Phelps , this guy knows the U.S. like no one else ! He plays songs you never would hear on KRTH !!As for any mergers with the Doggy Satelite and XM its still better than Terestrial Radio !! You get Bobby Ocean on the 70 s channel He is a Bay Area Legend in Radio !! KFRC lost him to XM and never recovered its audience! You know how good he is from his stint at World Famous 93 KHJ in the 70 s !!So just sit back and watch the AX fall on KRTH soon they CBS/ Infinity did it to WCBS ,New York KFRC SF and Your next!! Wow I remember the day they dumped WCBS the callers were calling XM and telling Terry Motormouth Young how great XM was, so Im sure XM is alot more Solid than anything CBS owns !!They CBS sold 93.3 KYCY to some Spanish outlet , and The Big 610 AM to some Religous Broadcast Station ! Satelite is ,and wil be the Future for radio! For 12.95 a month, its costing me ,and almost 8 million other listeners about 44 cents a day to have XM ,thats based on a 30 day month! Wow what a deal, I feel better with the caps off ,and my XM on !!!Kenny in Concord Calif.

The 70's channel on XM is one of the worst programmed channels on the face of the earth. Too much obscure music that, frankly, I don't even know. I did hear Jay Ferguson's "Shakedown Cruise" last night which I haven't heard since I played it on-air about 20 years ago.

I've posted many times here I don't like the sound of K-Earth. I don't like the way Jhani Kaye programs - allowing only liner cards to be read (outside of morning drive), hiring lightweight talent, tight playlists and pre-compressing songs before going through the audio chain along with virtually flat, extremely light processing. He's killing K-Earth.

I think XM could do much better in bringing in live air personalities 24/7 on some of their formats but with having studios in D.C. and until recently insisting that talent come from there, they've limited themselves.

I enjoyed the MTV and VH-1 music channels on XM before they dumped them in September 2005.

Most b1, I think the 70 s channel has some improvements that need immediate attention. One they need to EXPAND the playlist and hire Talent they have the money and to stay competitve with this market it needs to listen to us the audience, we pay their bills!! They need to play some of these songs you never hear, "One Monkey Dont Stop No Show" ,Honeycone 1971 , "Double Barrel" Dave and Ansil Collins ,1971 " Viva Tirado " El Chicano 1970 , 5-10 -15-20(25years of love) The Presidents 1970, "Pay to the Piper" Chairman of the Board 1970 , (For Gods Sake) Give More Power To The People" The Chi-lites 1971 ,they need to give "Oh Girl" from 1972 Chi- lites a rest, for a while. And a few more, "Keep on Smilin" Wet Willie 1974 , and more Carpenters songs and more Bread songs!! And why not "Everybodys Everything" Santana 1971 They have Bobby Ocean and thats not cheap talent ,But they need more live guys on their broadcasts!! More jingles from the 70 s too!!On the 60 s channel they have a EXCELLENT "Top of the Hour ID" The 7s channel needs one too!! It seems to me they really put alot of effort in the 60 s channel and neglect the 70 s well Those are the only thing I listen to on XM!! So if you guys at XM read these posts, lets get going ,Im waiting!! Kenny in Concord

Fortunately Kaye hasn't had to hire too many jocks as KRTH had a decent staff in most shifts. But his big error has to be the 1 to 4pm shift, ugh! The real problem at KRTH is the GM who can't seem to stay out of the Programming end of the business. At Kaye's other station he had for the most part a very talented staff. KOST continues to do well in that department. At least he's improved KRTH's music. They're more listenable now than they've been in years... I think that KRTH should've made the deal with Dees. My choice since that didnt happen would be Charlie Tuna. He's a better fit there. As for the processing, it is too light. He could've relaxed the compression without going as far as he did.

Looking at K-Earth's ratings for the summer book, Jhani Kaye is doing nothing but put this format in a casket. Their worst book ever. Great claim of fame for Jhani! It's only a matter of time...and I don't give it much of that.

What is this fixation about Charie Tuna? He sucks as a morning personality. The only reason he's lasted so long is he does anything that management wants him to do without question. He even runs the board for his own Saturday "best of" of KBIG. Tell me what morning air personality would do that?

Wow, I'm no Tuna lover, but the man does have an impressive resume'... But hey, don't mince words, tell us how much you really hate the guy? Runs his own best of? Doubtful, and how would you know? You work at 3400 West Olive? Hmm...

But obviously even a untrained chimp programming a station could beat Steal, Zapoleon and Burns.
Ziegler is not talented and is one person that KFI should loose.
I tried to listen to Ryan Seacrest since this is the first time the two have been on opposite each other. All I can say is Ryan sucks.
...who was his assistant, "ChaChi" is totally unqualified and shouldn't be programming.

Ug. Where do you guys come up with this stuff? While the Tuna is very committed to his job, he does not run the board on Saturday. Sometimes he will come in on weekends, though, and do show prep and backup. And that, in the era of the super ego (read: not superego. Think less Freud, more Dees), is rare.
