Their website describes them as "Today's Christian Music". Isn't that the slogan of Salem's satellite-fed format?

Today's Christian Music?

From what I hear, Salem has already begun the paper work to have that fixed.

Such a Christian thing to do, get the lawyers going, take them to court- certainly scriptural. Perhaps it's the Salem Bible they are using. Today's Christian music is something that could apply to most stations, like safe for the whole family. Perhaps I should go copyright the word "Christian"...something to think about. Wouldn't that create chaos!:)

There is a positive to trademarks and copyrights: when effective the brand name over takes the actual product name (eg. Klenex, Windex vs. tissues and glass cleaner).

Awful lot of Salem hate for something that hasn't been shown to be occurring.
______________

There are plenty of groups that already think they have the copyright on the word "Christian". I'm more and more convincd that evangelicalism/fundamentalism has absolutely nothing to do with what Christ actually taught.
______________

Probably a waste of my breath again...but can you please tell me exactly where the Bible says it isn't Christian to protect a trademark/copyright? I'm not exactly sure how defending your branding is anti-scriptural.

Also... once again... information is always helpful:

It wouldn't be a copyright at issue anyway...it's TRADEMARK...

...and Trademarks are protected:

Look, B, you've posted this same complaint over and over on practically every board on RadioInfo and other places, and it's long past old.

Obviously, someone claiming to be an evangelical has hurt you deeply. I am sincerely very sorry that that's been the case, but it's not going to be sovled or resolved on any radio message board. Could you please stop posting that and really work on the problem out in the real world? I would personally apprectiate it very much. I don't know what I could do to help, but, if there's anything, contact me off-forum.

Re: Today's Christian Music?

If you feel this is a waste of your time then why bother. I will answer though that I am for protecting trademarks. I do feel that taking a phrase that every station uses and marking it for trademark is the same as if I took "Christian" and trademarked it.

Spirit 102.3 was a Mainstream Rocker prior to CCM.
______________

My feeling exactly!

I'm with Elizabeth on this one...there's nothing wrong with a company wanting to protect their brand.

There's a price to anything. I'm sure that Cox could keep the name if they're willing to license it.

Didn't we discuss this earlier concerning WAYFM and the other WAYFM, wasn't Elizabeth's response a little different for that situation.
I don't think anyone "hates" Salem but I really can't speak for those here because I don't know you,I know I don't hate Salem. I do think that taking a phrase like "Today's Christian Music" and "Safe for The Whole Family" is really not being that creative. It's a phrase anyone of us would use daily and I can't believe that it could be trademarked. It's not a name like "Kleenex" or "The Wave" or "The Voice" etc. It would be compared to using "Positive" - perhaps I should go out and trade mark "Positive" &"Hits" & "Encouraging" -why not throw "Love" in too, I think you get my point.

It isn't a phrase every station uses. And it's been marked long before Cox made the switch.

What? Totally incorrect. Again.

I've always supported the use of branding and trademarks. I've never said anything to the contrary on this board or any other. Site your source and kindly refrain from misquoting or misrepresenting my posts. Again.

"I do think that taking a phrase like "Today's Christian Music" and "Safe for The Whole Family" is really not being that creative. It's a phrase anyone of us would use daily and I can't believe that it could be trademarked."

I'm not very sure anyone uses those phrases in casual conversation...at least not in any circles I'm socializing in. Highly doubtful outside our industry anyone is tossing out those phrases, UNLESS they are referring to the station they listen to... hence...BRANDING.

Re: Today's Christian Music?

Quoting Elizabeth from the previous attempt to tackle copyrights and I apologize - it was someone else that considered it all fair game:

"Where trademarks and copyrights are concerned, I favor the right to do fair business over "too nice to sue".

She has not changed her view on the subject.
In response to what I said about "something we all say" ("Safe for the whole Family" "Today's Christian music"), I of course was referring to those in radio, anyone else wouldn't even care. We had sweepers for years that said "Safe For The Whole Family" - probably a lot of stations did. None of us thought about getting it trademarked. I don't like that expression too much. We & others also used "Today's Christian Music" in some context. I think creativity would have been great for Salem. I guess we will see who has the most money; Cox or Salem.
