Conan Goes To TBS!

In which case, it may be that you're not the primary audience.

Jay Leno has announced that he will move the "Tonight Show" to TBS in May, 2011, giving Conan O' Brien 7 months to find a job. LOL!

Does TBS send one feed live throughout the time zones, or do they send two feeds? If they do, I would assume Conan would run at 11 east/west, and 10 central/mountain. Hey, that would be Conan at 10 in some time zones. The irony!

To me, this is a STEP DOWN for Conan.

No offense, but the type of program that he had done on NBC is now proabaly going to be lost in the shuffle with ESPN Sportscenter, reruns of NCIS, Law & Order, etc.

He may draw ratings, but not the type on network TV.

To me late night is more important on ota tv than cable because of history.

I imagine that NBC is yawning while Leno continues to beat Letterman in the ratings when they heard this news. ;D

I watch TBS mainly for reruns of Seinfeld, Raymond, and King of Queens. I might check out Conan since I did occasionally watch him on NBC, but I doubt if it will be regularly. I like Letterman and Leno better and there's other stuff on cable I like better as well.

Upon further investigation, currently TBS has an east and west feed. Lopez apparently airs 11p Eastern, 10p Central, and 9pm Mountain, and the west feed runs it at 11pm Pacific. So if they keep things the same, Conan will be at 9pm mountain...before my bedtime! :)

Lopez personally called Conan and talked him into taking has 11PM time slot.

That's like Leno personally calling Conan and asking him to move aside.

In my view, Lopez has a lot of class.

Some Mountain zone cable systems air the east feed (9 PM), but others
use the left coast feed (12 AM ). There may also be variances between
the SD and HD channels of TBS on the same system.

If you are in Phoenix or Tucson and have Cox Cable (analog), let's just say
you'll have to stay up real late, especially during the four "winter" months
of standard time. The Cox digital tier currently airs the east HD feed, but
the west SD feed.

So I haven't seen this reported, but I assume Conan will stay in LA, and tape the show on the Warner lot...in Burbank! It's less than a mile from NBC!

Another aspect that has been somewhat under-reported is why the Fox deal didn't happen. Yes, we've heard that it came down to creative control, and Conan "owning" the content, and that makes sense. But is there more? Perhaps there will be less pressure to score huge ratings on TBS than there would be on Fox. Afterall, TBS is in a position where ANY increase could be huge for them, and well worth the investment, whatever that may be. (Conan's deal is another unreported part of this story).

Somewhere out in yonder, FOX affiliates are breathing a sigh of relief. Now they can merrily continue airing The Simpsons, TMZ or King Of The Hill reruns without nary a worry. ::)

I really doubt Lopez was all that gung-ho about the idea. Of course the press releases say that. What more likely happened is TBS told Lopez to accept it or they'd can him ASAP. Or Lopez's ratings were too low and he knew he was gonna get axed, so he said "If I can help get Conan, will you extend my contract."

This is about smooth marketing not Lopez being happy about being pushed back to a later slot. Lopez's only joy is he may be able to keep some viewers that will tune into Conan.

So you're blaming TBS for something they started that everybody else now does? I guess that's a principled stand. I don't think I've watched anything on TBS for years except for Seinfeld reruns. But I like Conan and I'll watch. He'd better do a sharper show than he did on NBC though, or it won't last.

I remember that TNT and TBS started the pop-up ad/promo concept shortly after Time Warner got rid of WCW. It was around 2001-2002 that both TNT and TBS were rebranded into what we know them today. But the fact that everybody else practice this concept doesn't make it any better.

There's probably a few Conan fans in Japan who are confused by this news since a different TBS exists there. Or not. :D

Now watch George Lopez go to Fox. That would be funny.

It's true but the DirecTV and Dish Network subscriber base on the west coast only gets the east coast feed to my knowledge. Likely not a big deal becuase TBS (like TNT) will re-air the original programming again in the night.
