Confirmed: Salem To Launch Columbus FM Talker

It looks like Salem radio is in this for the long term. Mike Gallagher said at 9:10 AM this morning
he is thrilled to be on in the battleground city of Columbus. He said he was also born in Dayton, Ohio.

Salem just posted this on the station:

Why We Exist: We make a promise every day when we go on the air. We must deliver on that promise. We never want our listeners disappointed. We always want to be the answer to the question: What's going on, here, there or anywhere. We'll teach you something about the day's news and events, with smart passionate hosts.

We know in Columbus radio you have many choices and we appreciate the fact that you gave us a chance. We created 98.9 FM The Answer so you can have your own radio station that cares about the city we serve. We decided there were 3 things we had to have on our new station. First is News, and we have the best in the business from the Salem Radio Network. If news breaks, we'll tell you about it. Second is Opinion. Our hosts come from a wide and eclectic background, but you will never call them afraid of giving an opinion. Third is passion. We deeply, passionately believe what we say.

On November 1, 2012, we created 98.9 FM The Answer. This is why we exist.

xmusicmatt, Thank you for going to the time and trouble on editing and posting this 29 minute stunt loop here. This is much appreciated.

Also, heard the bit about Salem radio finding Jack FM for sale on Craigslist. Any way, it was pretty entertaining listening last night and a little sad at the same time.

The only thing that may bring longevity to this is that it's all Salem talkers so it's really cheap for them to run. [Automation computer in a corner, playing out an satellite stream from Salem Radio Network throw in a few ads and liners and you got 98.9 FM].

It's not quite all SRN shows; among the programs that the station carries are Dennis Miller (Dial Global) and Lars Larson (Compass). However, even those shows (especially Mr. Miller's) are carried on other Salem-owned stations.

Dennis Miller bombed locally on 103.9 when they were talk. His whiny voice is kind of grating.

Dat's just his Yinzer accent n'at yinz know. (Thanks, Mom and Dad, for waiting until
after I had learned to speak before moving back to Pittsburgh)

My apologizes for not doing enough research - was up all night and the stable looked like what I had seen on other Salem properties so I assumed...

Every time (and not often) I have listened to Dennis Miller and Dan Patrick's shows, I always felt as if I was an outsider attempting to listen to the meeting of an insiders club.

Interesting comment from Radio One earnings call yesterday.

We sold one of our problem stations in Columbus to Salem. There were too many urban radio stations in Columbus. So we flipped one to general market Jack format. And Jack wasn't doing jack as I like to say in terms of ratings. So instead of putting more resources behind it and taking up brain power we decided to sell and that kind of pays for a good portion of the investment we are making in Charlotte.

If that's true (a big "if" given that they've been making noises about leaving Columbus for ages), it would be interesting to know (a) when the negotiations for the Salem sale started, and (b) whether R1 would have reconsidered had they seen the nice ratings bump we see now.

Radio One didn't give it a chance and to be honest without being on the inside I can't be for sure.. but I am pretty confident that the move of Magic to 106.3 to preserve the urban format was Radio One's owners getting ready to put 98.9 up for sale.. they knew they couldn't sell and let go of the Urban format [look at the fire storm of the gospel format going away on 106.3] so they placed a place holder format (jack) on 98.9 as they shopped it around.... That's my belief.
