Could a CLASSIC dance station work?

I'm writing from New York, where we have 2 stations (WKTU and Mix 102.7 - WNEW) that play a lot of classic dance during the disco era and the mid 80's-early 90's era (when there were two dance stations at differing times playing the material as current).

Saying that, Energy 108 was a MAJOR influence in my life everytime I would visit T-Dot. If anything, it was because of that station and the lack of a dance station in New York at the time that I made a fight for this and formed the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition.

Here's a thought....could a "classic" dance format work in Toronto? I am leaning on the type of material Energy 108, and other stations such as Power 88.5 and Hot 103.5, were playing in the 90's. Stuff like BKS, Jam N' Spoon, Capital Sound, classic Eurodance, etc and perhaps some disco thrown in. If a station like that could happen, would you tune in?

me too, but it's closer to the 't-dot'/as in buffalo.

-Energy 108, [yes!,108 was my fave : )
-other stations such as Power 88.5 [yes, power, premiered
daze, superhero lover], and were 1st with alotta euro songs...

-Hot 103.5,[they were probably the best!!]

Music these stations were playing in the 90's. [yes! it would work]

Stuff like BKS, Jam N' Spoon, Capital Sound, classic Eurodance, etc
and perhaps some disco thrown in.

***(YES!! : ) it would work, and it has proven it would!!!!
sign it on 4 us! ***

You ASK:
If a station like that could happen, would you tune in???...

*>*>*>*>not only would i tune in, i would Intern, run, dj,
promote, and pump this super-station : )

> *>*>*>*>not only would i tune in, i would Intern, run, dj,

I HEAR YA! :)

To add on to this, what would be the icing on the cake here is to bring back some of the Energy 108 personalities like Scot Turner, Mike Devine, Wayne Williams, if Tony Monaco wants to come over from Z103.5. etc. It also gives Canadian artists like Emjay and Capital Sound a chance to come back and do the club circuits. I could easily see spots on such a station promoting "retro" nights in the clubs.

Like I had said earlier, since we have 2 stations in New York covering dance classics (though one...KTU..does play currents) to which they go back to the era's when such music was new on the radio, it just makes sense that a classic dance station in Toronto would cover the 90's era when Energy 108, Hot 103.5 and Power 88.5 ruled supreme!

Definitely hits the 25-54 female demos advertisers love.

How many women in their 40s and 50s are going to listen to dance music on the radio, even if it is classic dance? Dance is simply not a viable radio format in North America, except *maybe* in markets #1 and 2 in the US.

I'm surprised that you are saying that, and this is TORONTO we're talking about. I mean Toronto and the GTA is no small region by any means.

Yeah, I'm in New York City and being we have one station that really does the entire dance run from disco to now and another station purely classic dance, it does decent. But with Toronto being so diverse in population and of course the number 1 market in Canada, I would think such a station could work out. Maybe not in Calgary or Saskatoon, but I would definitely think in Toronto such a station could work.

And regarding women over 40 listening to dance, my mother does! And a lot of her friends down here listen to 'KTU and Mix 102.7 as well. I really don't think Toronto is that different than NYC other than being in another country and all so I could see the older female demos turning out for such a station, I mean, the 20-somethings that listened to Energy 108 in the 90's are now in their mid to upper 30's. That definitely covers the umbrella.

The biggest difference between Toronto, and NYC, (an important one to keep on mind) is that when Dance108, and later, Energy 108 was around, the rule for cancon was only 30 percent, and today it is 35%, with talks of the CRTC (the Canadian version of the FCC) increasing the Cancon up to 40%.

The BEST question to ask now is, can it still be done? Even with the current cancon rules? And, if they do increase the cancon rule to 40 percent, can the Classic Dance format still be done in Canada?...successfully?
______________

They're exceptions. KTU is pretty focused 18-34, with 25-34 the peak. And well, look at Mix's ratings.

Dance is a niche specialty format, like Blues, Folk, Punk, etc.

Which leads me to another BIG difference between NYC and Toronto.
In the United States, a company can own up to 60 percent of a market. In Canada, the CRTC only allows a company to own a Max. of TWO FM's and Two AM stations in a market, so in the states, a company can deliberatly maintain Dance or what ever with little or no care how well the station does, as long as it is NOT a threat to any of their sister stations in the same market.
______________

Who would do it

There isn't a broadcaster in Toronto that would dare venture something like this. If you're not from Toronto, then you probably don't know the Toronto market well. It seems to consist of alot of Hot AC stations, each playing a few different songs, a classic rocker, a Alternative CHR, Jack, and Jazz.

Radio in Toronto isn't interested in doing CHR, let alone classic dance, and Evanov wouldn't do it, because it would eat his numbers at 103.5. For some time he did have Power 88.5 doing dance, but that ended quickly...

Not to mention, it's hell to program with the bloody Cancon laws up here. It's one thing to create a CHR where you play 35% canadian music, but a classic dance? How often can one listen to Capitol Sound?

Even if there was someone willing to give it a try...well, the Cancon Regulations smoke the idea. Just as they smoke any chance of a Classic Urban station. I'm sure scores of people would listen to Johnny Gill and other 80's/90's urban artists, but there isn't enough Cancon to make it viable.

Evanov radio group did not launch Power 88five, it was launched by the previous owners, 1029167 Ontario Radio ltd. Evanov radio group bought the station to reduce competition with their Z103 station (Hits 103five at the time, a Dance/CHR station)
Apon purchase of Power 88five, the Evanov group immediately changed it to a short lived "Cool New country" station called 88five the "KAT", wich after only a short time was changed into a Dancin' Oldies station, but again, only for a short time, leading up to their current format of classic memories "Foxy 88five"

Getting back to the Classic dance...there's still room for SOMEONE to atleast have a Saturday night feature...

(and...there may also be a station in G.T.A. looking into this format as we speak...but I fear that station may get stuck playing some weak CDN cover tunes 35 percent of the time to get by. (or some lost, but perhaps still good CDN cover tunes)
______________

CHUM Dance Party

CHUM has a pretty good live to air. Far as I know, they are live Friday and Saturday, Saturday I think it's the C-Lounge (very upscale). The music mix is pretty good too. It's a mix of older dance music and some newer dance that I've never heard on the radio in Toronto. They do some older hiphop too.

*NEW* ..CLASSIC dance station work ?

Mike Devine - he is currently at z103..not sure if he would do it.

Wayne Williams - he is more than HAPPY @ da-flow..energy is
his 'baby' but the flow is the dream he wanted !

if Tony Monaco wants to come over from Z103.5. etc.
-why not, to quote cliff claven, not many people know this..but
"monaco started at 108..."

Tony Monico- AM 640 "The HOG" 1990. FM108 was still "Favourites of the 60's 70's and 80's" He's been in the Toronto market longer than you think. (-:

CKOT-FM "Easy 101" in Tillsonburg has the "Saturday Night Dance Party". Now that is REAL classic dance, way before the 80s...the kind of stuff I could see Canadian Idol's Steffi D enjoying. I'm sure that station can be picked up in the western GTA, or at least Hamilton.

What is CFHK-FM (Rancid, er, Fresh FM) doing in the dance department? I know they say "The New 1031 Fresh FM is the premier meeting place for females in London."
