Countdown to WFMX Flip

Now is this true what I hear about Billy buying SIC? Thats fantastic. And KR left? Thought KR would have to be buried under his desk using his cartons of cigarettes. Thats going to be a pretty empty building if its just SIC all alone in there.

I think I saw a familiar face or two on here from the house of Buck, maybe a Franklin if I guess correctly? I'm kind of desperate to hear whats happening over there. I feel like a veteran trying to contact all his old war buddies after a too many years. Considering some of the stuff we went through I guess thats sort of accurate.

Yes,

Billy is buying WSIC, and is waiting the mandated 90 days to hear from the damned FCC....but hey if he gets it good...I love listening to the Home Ad Show, and two, I used to work for SIC and FMX just like you and Opie Walken, i was there about 2 years ago as a board op, and yes KR is leaving, b/c of some needed changes...when I spoke to Opie the other day from what I found out, he lived further away from the station than I did (50 miles ) I only lived a few miles away as I live in the nether-regions of North Iredell, and he lived in Elkin...but yeah...it will be sad to see him go...he was the next best productions guru...esp. when it came to recording spots for NC State, he was mixing, chopping, and screwing together all sorts of bits and pieces in Prophet, and I remember watching it happen, he was like a "mad scientist" behind that computer....

On another note, I operate a country internet radio station, but am awaiting my licensing, so I can go full fledged (no FM yet) but even if i did, I wouldnt go all Clear Channel and Mercury, b/c even if they tried, they wouldn't get thru to buy me out....so in closing, I hope that when I get the required licensing, that I can get you guys to tune into a new country station hitting North Iredell and the entire county of Iredell....

Wayne

PS. When I get up, each of you here interested in still hearing the country format, besides listening to 96.9,103.7, and 104.1, I will post a link to the streamer, as I can hold up to 1200 of you at one time....

Do you guys seriously think Billy Buck has a thin dime invested in buying a $700,000 station? I'm sure he's getting his 5% equity by working for nothing.

Nothing personal. Wayne - buy your website would be easier to read if you used white text on your dark background - or a lighter background. Black text on blue (particularly with texture) just disappears for lots of people!

Good luck with your project.

So Badnews, since most us here are pretty open about who we are. So I'm just curious, as a man with many opinions, who are you?

(crickets chirping)

Yes...badnews, as we await your identity...

Eric

(crickets continue chirping--the silence is almost deafening, isn't it?)

Billy Buck might not have much but I bet you'd be suprised what Bill Blevins has.

Yes Badnews, please identify yourself, I happen to know Billy and Ben personally, and they are very nice people...so comments like that need to have it that you are stricken down by lightning never to return....people hate others that make comments as such, and you sir, are a very offensive person....WSIC is the hometown station that Statesville loved next to FMX, and Ben and Opie can back me up on that one....

The crickets are still chirping...if I wouldnt say so myself, you are nothing but a pessimistic radio personality who probably got fired from a station and hated them for it so you believe it is fair to oh how to put this, "condescending" on other DJ's and Jocks for other stations that have something....I am guessing that is why you are such a hater and not a friend....

Nuff Said,
Wayne

PS. I know I need to update the BG on the site...it does look crappy, and I hope to have that done sometime this week before we kick off the station again...

Well,

I know you didn't call it carppy, I did, and I understand it is hard to read...that is why i described it as such...I am working on newly coded php sotes as I am writing this message...so it will be a little better for all

Wayne

Alright then, if you would like, I will give you the URL to the site as soon as it is done....just post your email or IM addresses here, and I will contact you when it is ready

From the outside looking in, and by reading the posts here...it easy to see that Mr. Blevins is just another small town radio guy who has been convinced by someone with money (even if its a relative, as it seems) that if they put in 18 hours a day, they will be rewarded with equity. When the reality is they will be kicked to the curb as fast as possible when the owner sells out to one of the big bad corporations you all hate.

Who am I? I'm a guy who was so intrigued by reading the posts about this market that I felt I had to point out the delusional beliefs about the business by the garden club of little girl radio geeks gathered here. I will continue to comment from an observational level...not a personal one.

Even though you all think this is a personal dialogue, I choose to remain a voice of reason...but not a real person. Just someone who has no vested interest in WFMX, Statesville, Billy Buck, or anyone posting here. Never worked with anyone, never worked at these stations, and frankly feel lucky for that. I’m kinda stunned that this kind of thinking still exists anywhere in the country!

No one likes bad news, but someone has to be the grown up professional who sees broadcasting for what is...not some fantasy land!

OK ladies, tell me how I don’t get it…and don’t care.

Oh you get it all right. Or is that wish you could get it. Sounds to me like someone who wishes they were in a position to take advantage of the success that Bill has had. I too have never worked for WSIC/WFMX but did work with Bill over 25 years ago. We've been out of touch for years. I don't think I know anyone posting on here. For someone just observing you sure do make a lot of assumptions. It really should only matter to the people directly involved where the money comes from. Also where do you come off with the little girl and ladies stuff? Is your vocabulary so challenged on this board that you have to revert to that to express yourself? I would expect more from a broadcast professional. I think it's clear to the rest of us that we need pay no more attention to your post as you have nothing constructive to add.

I agree with spacetrucker on this...I have worked with Billy, and have known him for almost 10 years...him and his son, and family are one of few of the greatest people you will ever meet, and to call us ladies I think in my opinion means that you are nothing more to radio than just a little bug that needs to be squashed....it is people like you that take the fun out of radio in itself....a lot people like yourself probably take radio as a way to make a damn paycheck, but for some of us, and I speak not for myself but for Billy as well...RADIO IS FUN...F-U-N....Get it, got it, good...if not...[EDIT]....and stay out of the fun....b/c us here including spacetrucker and myself, think you should leave here and never return unless you have a very and I clearly say VERY productive comment to add...

NUFF SAID,
Wayne Owens....

PS. Flame me and everyone here all you want badnews...but it will do you NO GOOD

[EDIT=personal attack]

First of all, grow up. Second, open your eyes and look around you. All we're trying to point out here is that because of people with your mentality radio has gone from something with a purpose, a source of local connection, to a sterile environment that might as well be based on another planet rather than down the street. Also, if you have no vested interest in the FMX flip and our opinions, how did you find these threads and why did you bother to reply to them?

I never cease to me amazed as how interesting threads ultimately degerate into personal attacks and childish games.

If Billy Buck wants to devote the next few years of his career working with some friends with money, that's fine. It is his life and his choice. None of us have the right to berate that decision. I wish him well!

Lots of people have expressed opinions about the demise of WFMX and it has been an interesting discussion until the personal barbs start to fly. Respect the feelings of those who feel the loss of their favorite station - or a station that was an important part of their life in some way or another.

I never worked for WFMX, but I have worked in similar circumstances. If you are really a radio person, you should be able to understand the emotion that we attach to our work and the sadness we feel when an old friend passes on!

It is one of the problems with today's radio - it isn't personal enough!

Although not a personal attack, I use the “little girl/ladies” reference because you can actually hear the shrill, shrieking histrionics come though the monitor anytime you folks feel as if someone doesn’t “care” as much as you about the state of radio today, or your hometown stations. Borders on being silly.

How I found and decided to join this discussion is kind of a silly question...when it’s posted on a board that has areas/markets broken down right on the front page! Once again, you really are stuck in your own world, seemingly unaware of the rest of it…or how it works.

As to being productive with my comments, I would certainly like to think that there are at least a few folks in the business, or thinking about getting into it, that can benefit from a real-world view. Not the one from the

As far as being sensitive to the emotions, I am to a point. Radio folks put heart and sole into their jobs…but it’s just a job. That is not meant to be negative, just realistic. Your family and friends…the real ones, not the radio ones…should be the most important thing to you. Radio should be a passion, with a healthy does of reality. There does not seem to be a lot of that displayed here.

I’m a little stunned by the idea that I should never post here again because I have a different point of view. (BTW…a fine command of the King’s English, and no flaming from me) Frankly, not posting would seem counter-productive to me.

Well, my family is the most important thing in my life, and also my radio family...it is a mix of the two...my parents encourage my love for radio, and mind you that I am only 18, but I still have a NOT JUST A PASSION, BUT A LOVE FOR RADIO, my radio family as well as my actualy family are both top-notch priority, and if you honestly think we are little girls shreiking thru the screen, I have nothing to describe you as except a little worm....who thinks as you put it, that radio is just a JOB....IT IS MORE THAN THAT....IT IS A DEDICATION OF TIME AND SWEAT AND BLOOD....If everyone thought of it as a job as you do, then there wouldn't be the DJ's that joke and poke fun at the world around us....it would be the same old boring songs played over and over again with the proper ads in the rotation, and it would be as bleak as could be imagined by the everyday person.

My fine sir, if as mentioned above that people weren't dedicated to this, then myself, when covering live games at 3 in the morning, hell I coulda went to sleep, or clocked out early and went home, but did I, HELL NO!!!!!

I stayed there, even when I knew I was gonna go to sleep, and I stayed awake, and kept everything in running order, b/c of course, I was the only one there, the only thing to protect me was the damn security system...no bats, no weapons....just me and me only....and of course it would be a Saturday when I was there, and there would be no one there till 9 am the next morning....and nothing went wrong....NOTHING... I was 16 at this time....and DEDICATED....normally, they woulda wanted someone with experience to stay that late and lock up and run everything....but no.....it was me....I WAS DEDICATED....

Now If you want to say anything to that, then go ahead, I will just bash you even more....

Wayne
