Country (WSOC or WKKT)

Im not from Charlotte but I was their last summer and went to see a concert (Brad Paisley) at the outdoor theater near the Concord Mills Mall. Anyways getting to the point. What country station do people in and around Charlotte like better? When I was their I had it on WSOC 103.7 as they had good imaging and the music sounded great. Thats only my opinion. Also to ask which country station was their first if anyone remembers? Thanks

I believe that WSOC has been country much longer than WKKT.
When I am in CLT I choose WSOC over WKKT, mainly because WSOC is not owned by the Evil Empire.
And SOC has the races.

Yes I can confirm that WSOC-FM has been Country much longer than WKKT. I think WSOC-FM has been Country since at least the mid-1970's and WKKT was A/C as WLVV when I got to Charlotte in 1981. They went country as WLVK in 1985.

WSOC-FM had a solid line up of jocks for years including the late Bill Dollar, Bill Ellis (who left for WSSL Greenville, SC and he's still there!), Edd Robinson (music director who knew everyone in country music, Edd went to WFMX), and Bob Brandon. All very talented guys!

I remember a young guy named Paul Shadt who worked part-time and was buzzing around WSOC-FM all the time. What ever happened to him? ;D

WSOC was country long before the 1980's. I am not really sure when it cam on, but I remember listening to it in the mid-70's and it was country then.

Speaking of Edd Robinson...someone at WSIC told me about a month ago that Edd has been in some movies since the demise of WFMX. Anyone else heard this? And, Mike, remember Kitty Ledbetter on WSOC in the 80s? I really enjoyed listening to her. Also, what was the date of Bill Dollar's death? Wasn't it an auto accident? It also seems that Bill Dollar no longer was doing mornings not too long before his death--was this his decision or not? And, who replaced him on mornings? Jeff Roper?

I'm thinking Bill's accident was '93. You could search charlotte.com, maybe. And yes, he had been doing afternoons for a few months. I think it was a programming decision

I believe old Bill Dollar bit the dust in 1995. Paul Shadt and Claire B Lang were doing mornings at WSOC and Bill was doing mid days. Yes, it was a car accident in Gastonia visiting his girl friend.

I think Bill Dollar's unfortunate car accident happened in the Fall of '96, the year we moved to Charlotte. I remember being impressed with the way the entire airstaff handled Bill's death on the air in what must have been a very difficult few days for all of them. It was done in a very classy manner!

I, too, believe Bill died in 96 because i was on the air at the Fox when I heard the tragic news.

I do believe SOC rules the country air waves....not in to country though, so I can't say for certain. I have pals working over there and they are sister station to K, so I have only kind words for SOC!!

I enjoy Catherine Lane on middays. She is a great talent. (remember when she did mornings on Lite? I was working there when she was there :))

I have always liked WSOC even as a kid... Where I lived I had the choice of a lot of country stations from Columbia SC, Florence SC as well as the QC... WSOC was always my choice for country music... Back in the 90's they had some of the best audio on any station... Kat otoh was not really my cup of tea and to this date it still is not as good as SOC!!! The only bone headed move I ever remember WSOC making was back in 1987 when they dropped NASCAR!!!!!! it took them some time to recover what they had lost, but from that point on they knew what kind of treasure NASCAR really was to them!!! Doesn't he co-host a show called "Racing Country USA" with Kathy Martindale?

Someone asked how long WSOC has been playing the Country format, and someone mentioned it has been since before the 80's, I can attest that they were doing the contemporary format in 1976, I have airchecks of it from that year, although they were automated with the "voice over" reels with generic announcers saying what songs had just played. Drake Chenault stuff I think.

Kahuna,

WSOC-FM has been country continuously since 1972. Originally, it was a "Home-Brew" automation format with John Harper voicing all of the music reels. By 1976, they were using TM's "Beautiful Country" format, with TM's announcer back-selling the previous two songs on the reels.

At about the same time, WQSM in Fayetteville was using TM's "Stereo Rock" format, with exactly the same back-sell formatics. Also, WPEG in Concord began using Drake's "Solid Gold" and "Contempo 300" formats about that time, but these were single-cut reels with voiceovers varying from front-sell to back-sell. Could one of these be the station on your airchecks.

If I remember correctly, 103.3 WAKG Danville (VA) was also running the TM back-announced country reels--I was about 10 years old. Back in the day when FM dxing was good, I could pick up WAKG here in Morganton with an indoor dipole antenna.

I worked at WSOC back in 1995-96. Actually, I spent most of my time across the hall at Star 104.7 ("The Greatest Hits of the Seventies.") But I also did a weekend shift and fill-in at 'SOC.

What an amazing and talented staff! Every daypart was solid!

Paul Shadt did mornings along with Frank Lassiter in the newsroom
Bill Dollar had recently moved from mornings to middays
Mike Terry handled afternoons
Rick Mc Cracken kept it going at night

Paul Johnson "P.J." was our off-air PD

WKKT hadn't been born yet. In those days, it was WTDR. Owned by Trumper and recently moved in from Statesville. They were country, but were not yet much of a factor. If I remember correctly, we beat 'em in the ratings by about 2-to-1. Of course, being the flagship station for NASCAR didn't hurt us, either.

WSOC was a damn solid station. I really wasn't in the same league as those guys, but considered it an honor to be able to work with them. Thanks, P.J.!

Matt, It must have been the TM Beautiful Country deal, I am positive it is WSOC on the airchecks, as the only stations I airchecked at that time were WSOC, Big Ways, WSPA and WKMT.

WKKT started out as WDBM. I was there in the Mid.70's when it changed to WOOO. The AM changed from WDBM to WDRV. From there I lost track after I left in '78.
