Cowboys to The Fan

Word on the street is Bigby or whatever his name is has instructed hosts to NOT talk about Mavs or Rangers. That is why you hear b.s. movie and cartoon talk all day now. Why did they change formats again?

Station full of losers.

Cowboys signed a 10 year deal but the fan wont even be around in 5 years.

That would be stupid since 105.3 is the FM Weekday flagship of the Texas Rangers.....

Agreed! It's looking more and more like KRLD-FM is going to be a hype only for the Cowsissies. Wonder if this is a Jerry Jones call?

This will be good for The Fan. Not sure what it will do for the Cowboys. Even if the station changes formats in a year or so (which I don't think will happen) the Cowboys will still be there.

I believe the KTCK deal was for five years with chances to opt out; it ended up lasting 3 years. I would think the Cowboys deal with KRLD-FM would have clauses that allow one or both parties to escape.

You are quite right. I'm just trying to point out that the Cowboys have been on Newsradio 1080, AC KVIL, Oldies KLUV, and all sports KTCK (with a simulcast on classic rock The Bone) I don't think the format of the station will have a whole lot of bearing on whether the Cowboys stick with the station.

It is not a format change it is "Guy talk" Talk with sports as a back drop. Bigby made it work at the WIP long before the Ticket made the switch (Thank you Mike Thompson) and then again in Detroit, CBS hopes his magic will work here. Problem is he does not have the talent to do it here, but as I hear it he knows that and changes are on the way.... Greg Hill is on the way out, and Kevin is on thin ice as well....

I would say...The Fan is honestly trying to attack the sports radio market here in Dallas by becoming a monopoly on sports broadcasts.

They now are the official Texas Rangers, NASCAR, and now the official Dallas Cowboys radio station.

Now...if they can only get ACTUAL sports radio DJs that actually KNOW what they are talking about...I might start listening to them.

Having Ben & Skin on that station and calling them ACTUAL knowledgeable sports guys is a joke.

I disagree a little on this. Successful sports stations have hosts that engage their audience ... sort of on-air pals they like to hang out with. I would think folks ragged on KTCK when they started...Rhyner wasn't a sports journalist or an ex-player; he worked at KZEW and loved sports.

If anything, KESN and KRLD-FM, so far, have proved that "ACTUAL knowledgeable" folks (sports writers for the local paper, sports anchors, ex-players) don't necessarily bring audience. I would think Michael Irvin is pretty knowledgeable about playing football and the Cowboys. KRLD-FM has two ex-NFL players in Salisbury and Hill. And so on... None of these folks are bringing an audience.

Ben & Skin, from their KTCK days, seem to have a passion for the Mavs and the NBA and can talk about that in a fairly engaging way. They clearly seem not so confident -- and it comes across on the air -- on other topics, which is tough on a station that talks about the Cowboys 85% of the time. Not to mention their bits are pretty weak. It may be doing the Mavs post-game show on KTCK was the perfect fit for them; jumping over to 105.3 to fill out a show 5 days a week might have been too much of a stretch at this point. It probably would have been wiser to develop them...put them in the 7PM slot and let them chat about Mavs games in progress and do a post-game show. In other segments, they could get talk about other things and build their comfort level and then promote them to a more visible slot.

Everyone that the Ticket started with had a solid sports back ground: Skip bayless sports writer, Dunham and miller both sports guys at KRLD, Rhyner was a sports guy at the Zoo and was doing sports updates for at&t or SWB or something, Hammer was reporter at WBAP, and Coop was already a long time sports host. The Guy talk didn't come until 2 years in to the Ticket....

You are right, it doesnt make sense, but that is what they have been told. "No one cares about the Rangers, Mavs, or Stars" That is why you here music and entertainment news all day with Cowboys mixed in.

That seems strange. Obviously, the other sports have less of a following than the Cowboys in these parts, but it is NBA playoff time. The Mavs-Spurs game on KTXA Thursday night was the most watched program in the market that night. One would think the a significant chunk of audience of a sports station would have some interest in the Mavs.
