Cox spinning format wheel again

It's no use asking the dj guy (or girl??) questions... They can't respond for fear someone may find out who they really are ::)

since we are trying to get something out of dj ;) Do you have the inside track on kqll??

ROTFL, Junior2... so I'll never know what Tulsa radio REALLY says about me, behind closed doors... darn it...

I'll tell you a story: I had one of the leads in the musical my senior year of high school. In the last scene, I "get the girl," literally, sweep her off her feet, and dip her, apparently giving her a monstrous kiss which she comes up from looking embarassed, a bit irritated, but perhaps a little secretly pleased as well.

Years later, an old friend from high school asks, "did you REALLY french her just get back at her fiance?"

...uh... WHAT?

"Well, everybody said that last performance you knew her finance was in the audience, so when you dipped her you french kissed her right in front of him, to embarrass her and anger him!"

I laughed til I cried, wiped tears, hugged my old friend, laughed some more, and finally said, "dude, we weren't even touching CHEEKS, much less getting our LIPS close." The angle we had to the audience allowed it to look like I was smothering her in kisses, when it reality our faces were beside each other, turned opposite directions, with an inch or two between our cheeks.

This "horrible" rumor actually made me happy! I was SUCH a geek in school (those who know me are shouting, "YOU STILL ARE!"), and I figured people thought I was neutered since I didn't have my first girlfriend until my senior year. This accusation of inappropriate behavior meant people thought I had adequate levels of testosterone! HOORAY!!! ;D

...So from that little experience, I learned not everything said about you by others may always be 100% factual... Can you believe it?

I also found out the rumors can be MUCH more exciting than your real life... that's why I was so excited to hear what I had done! I figured I molested a kid, punched out the boss, ran drugs off the station phones, SOMETHING.

Oh, well...

Regarding KQLL, I'd love to say I had "insider info," but I have none. I really don't expect ANY changes there for months... at least one more book. Again, if it's up at all, this could drag on a LONG time.

The only movement I've heard on the Cox Tulsa front is about a long-time former sales manger being released due to budget cuts... which makes NO sense to me since I'd heard he made the stations tons of money. Why do you lay off the people who are MAKING you money?

It MIGHT signal changes at 102.3.

The inside track on KQLL? Does someone here think or know that kxojdj works for Clear Channel? If he does know what's going to happen with KQLL, I'd love to hear it.

Budget cuts on 102.3? But I thought their ratings were great compared to how Rock 102.3 did. How is that possible?

I agree, KountryBill, I agree: none of this makes much sense. As I understood, they're going great guns.

So why let go somebody who has made your company lots of money, from a station which is making money hand over fist?

Not much of this makes much sense...

Dump Spirit 102.3 and get a Jack FM station! Would be awesome to see Jack come to Tulsa I can only dream of hearing there trademark commercial saying 102.3 Jack FM "We play Jack" Tulsa has great radio stations but too many play the same format where as you all know Jack plays a large variety of songs that you don;t hear on the "average" Tulsa station and to those who say Tulsa is not ready for a Jack station "Rubbish" Tulsa is changing so lets change up the radio format! GET JACK PLEASE!

Although it sounds fun, there is a lot more money in 25-54 AC formats. The existing JACK formats are starting to run their course. Some have already dropped out of the format. FRESH AC seems to be the latest format of the month. I know JACK just went on in Houston, but it is a rim-shot signal just like JACK-OKC. If Spirit wasn't doing as well, I would suggest OLDIES 102.3. Somebody needs to do oldies and KQLL is not filling the void. They are like a JACK for bad 70s songs. I am not saying JACK is completely over, but I think it is a short fix and not a long term format.

Most of the large broadcast companies like the time proven solid formats like: News/Talk, Country, AC and Rock. In Tulsa, CCM is a solid AC format. The combined share of KXOJ and KKCM proves that. Their combined share puts them at the top of the 25-54 hill. Right up there with KMOD and the country stations. Not bad.

I do think the spanish stations are taking a hit right now with the changes in the immigration laws. The CHR battle is a tight one right now between KHTT and KTBT.

Agreed. Jack is a "flavor of the month" and you won't see them in 10 years, most likely. However, for the long haul in Tulsa, you'll see the mainstream and Christian AC formats continue to be a staple.

If 102.3 were to change to an oldies format, I would hope that they would be a true oldies station, as opposed to the "adult contemporary" oldies feel of the old format at KQLL. An oldies station shouldn't be afraid to play Little Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and the more rocking tunes from Elvis (as opposed to playing "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Love Me Tender" as their only Elvis tunes). They should focus on genuine "Rock-N-Roll" and lay off the Motown overkill that we heard on KQLL. And for God's sake, don't play "Gimme Dat Ding" or "Chick A Boom" or any of that gimmicky, bubble gum crap unless it shows up on one of your syndicated programs.

Tried to listen to KQLL today and couldn't stay long. Did they do music testing? Doubt it.
I also flipped in on Friday night and heard football.

It is one thing to air OU football on KMOD, but high school football on KQLL?? I think it is over for them.

I agree that they should go back to a traditional oldies format. Looks like the format is doing well in PPM markets. Hard to belive that Clear Channel is allowing this to happen on one of their stations.

I can listen to any radio station but KQLL WOW that is more then bad and the voice tracking is a mess. I hate to say it but dead air has sounded better.

Just proves that a great football player may not make a great coach or team manager.
In this case, a good DJ doesn't always make a good PD.

KQLL is a sloppy mess.

AMEN BROTHA TOO THAT MICHAEL DELGIORNO IS THE BIGGEST HIPORCRIT OUT THERE WELL BESIDES THE LADY ON 1170AM IN THE MORNING! SHE BASHES GAY PEOPLE ONE MIN AND TALKS ABOUT GOING TO A DRAG SHOW THE NEXT! "HELLO"

Are you kidding me? It's COX...they always shoot themselves in the foot like that. Last week they fired on-air people in several markets for the exact same reason. I'm certainly not a financial genius, but if you fire the people that help make you money, how do you quantify that? And after severance (or whatever deal they may have), what are you really saving? A few bucks, literally, several months from now?

I knew of a guy that was making Cox of Tulsa major bucks as a sales manager that had his job eliminated and he was out the door. He was a hell of a good guy and didn't deserve being kicked to the curb. For some reason they do that up there from time to time and I really don't know why. It's defies logic really. Overall it seems like Cox is a pretty decent operation, but some stuff they have done over the couse of time makes me wonder like this episode and when they jacked around with KRMG's mornings which eventually led John Earling to bail on them. Not smart..

The John Erling decision was directly related to Michael beating him at KFAQ. They needed someone that could stand up to a tougher competitve situation. John was good, but Michael was more interesting and drove the cume to 1170. Joe attracts a slightly younger audience and comes across more conservative. Not sticking up for the Cox, but that wasn't a bad call at the time. MDD is now gone and we will see how Joe holds up to Gwen and Chris.

As far as sales managers go, who knows. That can be totally subjective. It all comes down to their ability to recruit and train good sales talent. Some sales people get promoted to GSM and fail miserably. I sometimes wonder why a top seller would step down in pay to manage. Seems like it is better to self manage and make money instead of taking on everybody elses problems. A little different compared to the programming side.

This market has a few good GSMs and a few that should just be selling. Managing people (especially sales people) is not easy.
