Coyote McCloud

A sad day for Nashville! When I heard this this afternoon, time stood still. I can think of so many great and funny things that were associated with Coyote! I pray he's on the air in heaven. Thank you Coyote!

Announced it as soon as I heard on the air tonight at 6:20. I could barely compose myself. What a guy. Anyone who ever worked with him or listened to him was a better person because of it.

Coyote was the kind of guy who I expected to pop up again some day on another station. It didn't matter what the format was. His laughter was contagious. I have some old tapes from the mid-80's where he seems to just crack himself up and his laughter is funnier than the whole bit they are doing. I met him several times over the years - first up at 104 up in Gallatin picking up a phone I had won (!) and last at the Wilson County Fair. Even when I last saw him, I turned into that excited kid again just like I was meeting him so long ago. "Holy crap", I pointed him out to my wife, "It's Coyote McCloud!". Of course, I had to run up to him and thank him for all of the great memories. I'm so glad I did.

Last time I saw Coyote was December 2005 after he left Oldies 97.1. He wore a Y-107 jacket and seemed upbeat about getting back into radio soon. Sorry to read of his passing.

I grew up listening to Coyote on Y-107, and I'm very sorry to hear about his death. My condolences go out to his friends, family, and former co-workers.

Great air talent...funny guy.
RIP Coyote.
I remember the fun days at WMAK with you, Scott Shannon, Russ Spooner, Dick Kent, John Young, Jim Cooper, Dick Downes and many others.
It was great experience for a kid from Louisiana.

It was December 2006 when he left 97.1. I don't blame him for wearing a Y-107 jacket.

The congressman? ;D

I've probably been a little rough on Coyote in the past. I can't help but compare him + his accomplishments to Scott Shannon.

But he was a legend around here. And he said one of the funniest things I ever heard on radio (at WMAK; this may be a "you-had-to-be-there", but here goes): After playing "Hocus Pocus" by (of course) Focus, "How would you like someone (pause) pokin' your hocus?" I still laugh-

I first heard of Coyote McCloud on an aircheck of WQXI presented in an issue of the old cassette magazine "American Air-Chexx" in 1976. One unforgettable moment in my radio journey is when I heard him crank out that classic talk-up over "China Grove"...I've always considered it to be the BEST Top 40/CHR break I've ever heard. He also turned that little :27 break into a song of his own: "NITTY GRITTY ROCK & ROLL"

Very nice, Rich! You guys certainly understand the magic of radio. It's all about having heart and connecting!

I think one of the best barometers of how well a radio person is respected comes when his competitors respond favorably. I never worked with Coyote (Action Auction on Channel 8 doesn't count, does it?) but I know several people who did. ALL of them LOVED him.

He always had respect for what we were doing on the air and he was genuinely nice to those who competed against...at least that's my recollection.

I - in turn - couldn't help but respect their success...even if their presentation wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

I'm glad I knew Coyote McCloud.

I had just a few old cassettes left with some Y Morning Zoo clips on them. I posted some audio on You Tube:

I also found a couple of other clips when going through tapes -

Mike Bohan has posted a couple of WMAK airchecks of Coyote and a silent film he took at WMAK in 1973 here:

Coyote was the quintessential professional on the air, and a kind, compassionate friend off air. I was his morning partner on the WMAK-FM Coyote McCloud Good Time Good Morning Wake Up Show from 1999-2004 and loved every minute of it. While many will long remember hearing him on the radio, I'll forever remember hearing him in my headphones for four-and-a-half hours five days a week, and looking across the board to watch him work his magic. He was a gentle, sweet soul, and a very dear friend with an irrepressible laugh. Coyote could find humor in everything. He was generous in all he did and said. What an overwhelming loss.

Jim Cooper, aka Cooper Sly, the guy who started Tapscan with his brother in Birmingham.

I had the pleasure of working with Coyote briefly at WRQQ during his transition from Oldies 96.3 to 97.1, everything.. everyone has said on this board, in the newspaper, on TV.. stands VERY VERY true. "He was a nice person". He was an easy going guy. For those lucky enough to be raised in the area listening to Coyotes days as a "DJ".. I envy you. Coyote was part of a special breed of talented individuals who knew how to entertain and deliver the music.

Nashville radio and the world of radio has lost a great soul.
