Crossroads fires managers again

undertheradar said:
By the way hoosier45, I'd say Mouseman's been pretty open and honest about who/what he's about - it's you who seems to be hiding behind your posting name taking your shots. You want anyone to take your criticisms seriously, tell us who you are/what you're about/why you have any credibility? Otherwise, make a point on subject and keep your personal jabs of other posters to yourself.

I prefer to fly "under the radar".

Corporate management is looking at balance sheets, and plugging warm bodies into positions - but an account doesn't know why a motel manager is any different from any other "manager" - just cheaper. And why do we need local PDs? Isn't that why we have one Corporate PD to do PD stuff - one salary. Balance sheet looks better that way. CC just did that - fired three regional guys, then promoted three market GMs to do their jobs, plus keep their markets. Balance sheets just got much better - give that account a bonus!

And therein lies the problem and the death of radio. You must have local content, talent and programing to make this work. One size does not fit all. People in Denver, LA, New York, Terre Haute, Indy, St.Louis and Brazil do have different tastes. What works in one won't work in another on the whole. So since most radio people know this but the accountants don't the radio sound is stale, boring and generic. Just another reason to get out your ipod. Radio needs to stop trying to compete with an MP3 player. Radio can offer things that the MP3 player can't but if all we try to do is imitate it, then the industry is doomed.

hoosier45guy: "I prefer to fly under the radar"

That is so original - How you took my posting name, and then, and then, used it in your post! Such a clever girl. Such a clever reply. You want to remain faceless and nameless, and used my posting name to do it. SO clever.

That's fine. Just stop personally picking on other posters while you sit on the sidelines, or man up in the future, if you want to call someone out personally. Or take it off line.

This board is for the discussion of industry topics that concern us all - sharing of ideas, and opinions, how it impacts folks doing the job day-to-day. Nothing could be larger as a subject to us all than the continuing consolidation in our industry. Manufacturing in this country saw this happen over decades and squeeze employment levels to the minimals that are today's job market. We don't have decades - Our industry seems to be heading the same way much quicker- get each fortunate soul still employed to wear more hats [do more jobs] so other positions can be eliminated as corporate CFOs find more ways every day to reduce the largest cost center - payroll/head counts. OR, as this thread has been about, hiring non-industry personnel because it's cheaper and then live with the reduced product put to market. Its still all bottom line.

How many jobs to you think will be CREATED with the Cumulus - Citadel merger? Do you think that's what's on Lew Dickey's agenda - job preservation and creation? Or is it company valuations? Read the current Radio Ink - he's on the cover and interviewed inside. Or, look first hand at what this company has done to the employment ranks on North Shadeland. Do you see job growth? Or an office building that's mostly empty? JD Cannon's firing because of issues with corporate programming? Or, the fact that a CFO wanted to know why a local PD/MD was being paid so much money when the Corporate PD can do the job from another market.
Rumor has it that the first communication Citadel employees received from Cumulus recently wasn't about benefits, rather what Cumulus' SEVERANCE PACKAGE is. Welcome aboard folks. We don't have control yet, but here's an inkling of what's to come when we do.

So hoosier45 - take whatever petty personal squabble you have with another individual off our board - most everyone here is fighting for their livelihoods.

Holy S*IT if I had known that all it took to get back in the game was work the front desk at a hotel I would have answered the ad for the Motel 6 I saw last week...

And therein lies the problem and the death of radio.

Radio IS dead in the form most of us knew it. What's left is a shell of what it used to be.

You must have local content, talent and programing to make this work.

Strangely, this is the strength of radio, especially in news and information type formats in smaller markets.

One size does not fit all. What works in one won't work in another on the whole.

This is also very true which is why we have hundreds of different formats all competing for a tiny sliver of the pie.

I have said this for years. If I want music, I will use my IPOD/MP3's where I can listen to what I want, when I want without listening to the voice-tracked, satellite fed, digital crap thats the same in 50 or so markets. Strangely, what I want in Houston on radio is NEWS and even that's virtually gone except for KUHF. It seems the owners have bought up monstrous clusters and then determine what we want to listen to providing a steady diet of nonsense. I say it's time to get back to powerful, compelling and entertaining personality driven radio that makes people want to listen.

Drucifer if you're saying go back to the days of the boss jocks, of wall to wall music and live tracked commercials instead of "IT'S ALL ON SALE!!!" "BUY NOW NO INTEREST!!!!" CRAP that seems to be taken as the standard...well, until one Top 50 market can crack the mold it's not going to happen. The business of radio has taken the art of radio away.
Now I'd like to be able to pick up a license somewhere, set up a rig in a trailer by a lonesome tower, sell ads from my living room, and as long as I'm paying the bills and keeping my license up to date I'm a successful owner operator. No talent, just some happening jingles and a canned weather forecast (if I care to do it) and a target audience and WHAMMO!!! Money in my pocket. Go against the grain??? WHY???? Because I've got an urge to be a radio guy.

Back to Earth here. In reality I'd love to take an existing station and do like you suggested and make people take notice. Why can't they look past the spreadsheet and open the door to new styles...oh yeah I forgot: MONEY. More for me and less for you, my enslaved employees...
