Yes the AX did fall in Columbia. George Kearns, Tim Daily, Chris Logan and Doug Enlow are out...there are more to come I'm afraid.

That is very sad for radio. One of the few live stations left loses nights and overnites. And Doug was with McKay and Benton for years. What does that mean for Bill Benton? What does that mean for Woody Windham?

I listened this morning Bill Benton had a female on with him (running the board?) How long will Bill last? I also listened to B-106.7 and Brent Johnson was solo and reading the news and traffic reports. The Ace and TJ show (on WNOK) is horrible. I tried to listen to them and they sound like they are out of the age group for top 40 radio. I agree that big radio companies have ruined radio. I did the smart thing and left radio in 2000 when the automation starting to take over. My take is until the advertising dollars from business and the private equity firms stop giving money to the big radio companies we can all listen to our I-Pods and enjoy.

Question is was Doug Enlow really making so much money that his salary had to be dumped? and replaced with an hourly off-air board op? Sad

Yeah. They moved Will King into the midday slot at 107.5 with Brent. Previously, he just was a swing guy.

Sad for 106.7, but you knew it had to come. Cumulus doesn't care; all they want to do is make money.

I knew B106.7 wouldn't keep a live night jock, or even a voicetracked one. They either syndicate or automate that daypart.

I also see that Magic 98.5 is finally playing 80s music. That's a recent change, no?

Wouldnt that put them up against B-106? Will B go softer now? Brighter? Delilah?

Wasn't Carolina 92.1 supposed to pick up Delilah? I think B and Magic can be distanced enough. Magic isn't playing a ton of 80s music, but they wouldn't have played anything that new before Cumulus took over, if I recall. Seeing how soft is working for 92.1, if I were B, I'd go brighter if I did anything. They need to do something. Focusing the playlist was a start.

A couple of things. 1) I'm surprised that Benton is still doing Radio. Looks like he would have walked away a long time ago. I can only assume he's doing it b/c he loves it. Maybe he likes the salary, although I imagine it's only supplemental.

2)Really sad to hear about Doug Enlow. They eliminated his position at WOMG a couple of years ago and now this.

3)I agree that B-106 was bound to lose some live jocks. Sad, but true.

4)WOMG's music has now been "re-focused"to the point that you're more likely to hear Journey than the Beatles. So, that puts them in competition with their own Sister, B-106. WOMG is now playing much of the same music on B-106 and Steve.

That was kind of my point earlier. Don't you think B-106 will make some changes to move away from WOMG and Steve?

I don't know what the folks at Cumulus have up their sleeve. It looks like they would have already made any music changes that they were going to make at B-106. It would be interesting to hear them as Hot A/C. That could push WNOK into more CHR and Carolina 92.1 into traditional A/C. Might not be a bad thing.

I just hate to lose the Supremes, the Beatles and Paul Revere and the Raiders in the process. Sigh.

Magic's not a terrible classic hits station, musically, at all - they sound typical for the format in 2011. They really have thrown the 60s under the bus, though. It sounds like other Cumulus classic hits stations now. They leaned really old for the format, before.

I guess they have to decide which station is more viable in the long run - B106.7 or Magic? Or, can both stations be distanced enough (B going softer, B going hotter, as mentioned in this thread) to where it doesn't matter? Can both co-exist as they are?

If I were B, I'd eliminate all 70s music now. That's even more overlap with Magic that is not needed.

The end-game will probably be a format change for WTCB. Maybe not short-term, but if the audience levels don't change or react negatively to the changes, I would see CHR or Country in the future. That's where the bulk of the available shares are at this point. Shaving off a 2-3 shares from either WCOS or WNOK would put both Magic and Kiss further up the rankers.

I would love to see 106.7 flipped country because frankly WCOS needs some direct competition unless Tim Miller in his vast stupidity is going to return Carolina 92.1 back to New 92. I think this market is ripe for two 100 kw country stations. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens.

RE: Houston.

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: 1) the format requires years to build an appreciable audience and their are two other sure fire formats out that that build audience quickly. 2) Cumulus ain't that patient, nor are most operators. 3) the music mix on the Houston station is all wrong.

If Double O had really wanted to go after B, they could have put Hot AC on 94.3. They could get the softer audience from B on 92.1 and the more modern audience on 94.3 with zero overlap between the 2. A decently programmed Hot AC could not only hurt 106.7 more, possibly, but take away from WNOK. I think, overall, that Double made a mistake not picking up country or CHR on one of their sticks.

Country or CHR makes the most sense for 106.7, but Cumulus's CHR's are not very good - and when they attempt to go up against Clear Channel or another large company (Indianapolis, Nashville, Dallas come to mind), they usually aren't very successful. IMO, they do country much better.
