Cumulus' Jan Jeffries

Has Jan Jeffries moved from CHR to country at Cumulus? He's Senior VP/Programming at Cumulus and had responsibility for the company's CHR's. Last week, he started overseeing country KPLX in Dallas and this week announced he will remain as PD, splitting his time between Atlanta and Dallas.

Is Jeffries still overseeing the CHR's? Is his work with the country format a change?

They're probably spreading Jeffries out to give him an opportunity to ruin as many formats and stations as possible.

yea the Dallas station is history. next monday they will be old rock simulcasting the regular guys.

but it is ok cuz he will put the country station on the internet and on HD horseback. u know, they r pioneers that way.

These Cumulus guys want order and only puppets working for them. Quit giving them press and let them live in thier own worlds. If nobody went to work for them, they would have to do all this moronic radio on thier own terms without outside interference.

Having worked at a Jeffries consulted station, I just wonder when the ''Country Love Songs'' start clogging up nights..why this guy was running CHRs is beyond comprehension..his track record of taking profitable stations and wrecking them is legendary..an example of one of the many reasons why I stream XM and Sirius at home..commercial radio is dying a quick death..and Jeffries is one of the reasons why.

yes IIRC he was one of the last PD's to work there in 88/89 and did a good job of flushing what was once one of the best FM's in Atlanta down the crapper. While Star 94 may have held it's own for almost 20 years now (their 20th will be in October of next year), they are but a fragment of the old WQXI-FM of the 70's and 80's. (man I'm old enough to remember when we actually had radio stations in this town!)

94Q had been wobbly for a good two years before Jeffries. Yetta left the McKee morning show, "Jazz Flavors" was on every night of the week...The station was a mess. The best thing Jeffries did was push "Jazz Flavors" back to Sundays-only. And when Z93 went classic, he tried a mainstream CHR approach at a time when Power 99 was leaning heavily toward dance. When he was shown the door in the summer of 1989, Bill Cahill took over. It was Cahill who blew McKee out and flipped the station to Star 94.

Jan Jeffries has quite the resume for destroying once-heritage CHR's down the toilet -- beyond repair. It's a shame that higher-ups at Cumulus don't see that he's the problem. Talk about a cancer that continues to grow.

Anyone waiting for Cumulus to do great things in the ATL is going to be waiting a long time. This company is completely unprepared to do battle here. If you work for them now...run-do not walk for the door. You'd be better of slinnging "rangs" at the Varsity than working for them. If you've worked for them before, you know what I mean...you have my sympathy and admiration for enduring and finally getting out. Their master plan is to cut the station to the bone, then sit around and wonder why they aren't number one yet. Their PD's are the most overworked, underpaid and abused managers in radio today. This town was once known for great radio. Cumulus will change all of that. Just keep listening to their stations. They just don't have the chops for major market radio. There are a lot of talented people in Atlanta...I hope they all escape the Cumulus Clutch. There's a reason that company is named after a cloud.

Ya know pretty much everything on here is disputed and argued about. Is this the #1 thing everyone agrees to? Haha I almost want to see what it's like just to see what everyone is talking about

Ted,
I couldn't agree more. I am not sure who had it worse- the employees that were laid off when Cumulus took over, or the employees that stayed to see everything slowly stripped away and destroyed. One can only wonder what it would have been like, had Dave Kennedy been successful in the buyout.

You know, the sad thing is that there a so many talented, creative people that want to get into/stay in this business, but companies like Cumulus just won't allow it. Anyone who can think for themselves is not welcome in the Cumulus Club. And forget about the pay....HA! You'll do better at The Varsity...and you get a meal discount! Just do what they say when they say do it. Start trying to implement your own ideas and be creative and you'll find yourself ambushed on a payday with a final check and an escort to the door. The Dickey's are pompus and self-absorbed. They could care less if you live or die. They will milk every ounce of work out of you and toss you aside like you didn't even exist. Too bad they own so many radio stations. Speaking of stations, check the ratings on the stations they own in markets where they have a direct competitor...they're getting their ass HANDED TO THEM. Mostly because of the cororate CHOKE HOLD they have on the local managers. As for the winning stations they've just taken over....just watch the mighty fall. People, you don't have to settle for working for Cumulus. Take stock of the last time they listened to you or even pretended to give a crap about anything you had to say. Get out before they boot you out. Take your talent somewhere else...where it won't go to waste.

Even more sad: This is pretty much true at every major radio company today.

JJ is a hack. His claim to fame was WSGN LOOOOONG ago, and that station was on top long before he showed up. And he ruined WQXI-FM. And there's not a humble bone in his body. Just ask him....he'll tell you how great he is.
