Cumulus Media, Wilkes-Barre, PA

Purging has begun at WJR with Cumulus starting to clean out Detroit of long time talent...

Columbia, South Carolina and Providence, Rhode Island are the latest to be purged..Across the board, air talent, news, and even engineering. And I got out of the business WHY?

Tom Jenkins, Legendary AWARD WINNING Production head OUT at Citadel/Cumulus Wilkes-Barre
Phil, Chief Engineer/WARM PD OUT at Citadel/Cumulus Wilkes-Barre

Timmmay! Out at Clear Channel Binghamton

Too many great people AXED by bean counters who don't understand they are ruining their products.

Wishing those displaced find new radio homes soon..should they want to stay in the biz.

Phil out at Wilkes Barre? Are they nuts? Having worked there in the past, they have some real DOG stations there technically, especially WARM. I'm glad I'm away from all the stupidity thats going on now (I retired in Oct 2009). Good luck to Tom Jenkins also. who I worked with while there in 1998-99. Good luck to all those involved with these heartless clowns.

no one is safe in radio anymore..these so called ceo heads, g.ms pds and all the dept. heads who know nothing about radio, fire the people, who for the most part know what they are doing, should be put back on the used car lots were they came from. my advise to anyone going to college for broadcasting.... save your money, and do something else. being fired happened to me twice, at holiday time, with no warning, and no severance pay. so i know how it feels. good luck to all who were let go, and i hope all goes well for you in the future..

Really sorry to see Phil get the axe---the consummate Professional and one of the hardest working guys in radio..hopefully he can land on his feet...Good luck Phil...See you at the Warmland reunion

oldies4ever :'(

I'll second cowboy72's post. Happened to me as well. I had wanted to be in radio since I was a teenager and loved doing what I did until one of the before mentioned "brilliant" people put an end to that because I wouldn't kiss butt or do something else (but I won't mention here :-[). My college wanted me to come back and speak to prospective Mass Comm students but I would never do it. Cowboy72 is right - save your money and go into something more stable with a decent income. Radio was fun but, sadly, isn't so much these days.

So GLAD that I didn't spend too much time working corporate radio ... Radio used to be fun as many of Us remember.
But even in Mom & Pop radio ... You never knew what was coming next. The owners get the idea to bring in a new PD and He brings his buddy in From out of town that takes Your shift. The format changes again ... Everybody has a story . I'd rather do what I'm doing now ... Internet Radio. Nobody In A Suit is telling Us what We can or can't do. And I'm having Fun.

A couple of the folks sacked by these Bastards are old friends .... Keep goin' Guys. ... All The Best!

FYI. The latest Rolling Stone actually has a full page article on how Cumulus, Clear Channel and the others are creating cookie cutter centralized radio stations that not only Kill radio as a whole, but limit the amount of exposure new artists can get.

The iPOD is not the death of radio, station owners are

How could they fire Phil G?! He was the only one that kept that station somewhat running. I actually talked to him a number of weeks ago. The man always checked with me to make sure WARMs signal was loud and clear (I'm a listener in Stroudsburg). I didn't think anyone could be worst than Citadel, but looks like the shit just hit the fan.

they dont care who you are, cumulus, citadel, entercom, they are all the same. they will bring in interns who work for nothing, and dont know anything about broadcasting. not only radio, but tv too. watching the santa parade on 16 saturday, no audio for the first half hour, they showed a shot of the parade, and then a shot of some old farmhouse. it was terrible. back to radio, just tune in for a few minutes, and youll hear back to back spots for competitive sponsors, dead air between spots, bumper music that goes on for ever, because someones not at the mike, and the list goes on, and on. yes phil was a dedicated employee at citadel, but this is what happens when corp. takes over. ive said this many times,,, the bottom line is $$$$. they are cruel and worthless people who dont give a damn about the employees. good luck to all the professional people who were let go..

Farid and Judy may have been incompetent but nothing compared to the Dickeys. It's criminal this deal was ever allowed in the first place.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and well-wishes. I enjoyed working in the area for nearly eight years. The Citadel people weren't exactly spendthrifts, but I never had problems getting approvals for purchase orders for equipment parts and engineering supplies. My local general manager always made sure I had everything I needed in order to do my job and keep the stations on the air. Cumulus is a whole other story, as they lend a whole new dimension to the word "cheap".

The Scrooge Award goes to Lew Dickey and the other Cumulus scumbags who fired three people in Wilkes-Barre four days before Christmas! May they rot in Hell!

Phil G.
