CUMULUS SHUT DOWN IN LOUISVILLE?

I've been griping about this for years which is why I bit the bullet and dropped $20 this year for mlb at bat which gives you live audio of all games including the post season with no blackouts. It's well worth it provided you are near your computer or have an i-phone or similar device. I can remember eons ago when the Reds were on 84 WHAS, then on 79 WAKY, then they moved to 1080 WCII / WKJK. Problem is Cheap Channel is the only owner with any strong AM stations here and they are not going to give up any Ripp or U la Smell airtime. I think 1080 would be a good fit for the Reds but CC is more interested in airing stupid programming apparently.

When were the Reds on WHAS?  I don't remember this and I've been listening to their games here for over 30 years.  I remember them being on WAVE 970 though.  I'm not disputing, I'm just asking.

As far as I know. The Reds have never been on WHAS. I remember in the 80's when they were on WAKY & WVEZ (790) and WXVW (1450) at the same time. They went on to be on many other stations: WAVG (970 & 1450), WRES & WKJK (1080), WXXA & WKRD (790 & 101.7) and WQKC (93.9 & 1450).

Seems I heard Joe Elliott (who is a Reds fan himself) mentioning this sometime ago. Maybe it was a national broadcast of a playoff game like 700 WLW carries the national feed of some sporting events like the SuperBowl and NCAA championship game (or they used to anyway). I could be wrong though. I've given up on Louisville radio outside of 103.5FM which does a real good job, IMHO. I'll just stick with the internet, i-phone and satellite.

How many posts do you mention you're going to stick with internet streaming?

I don't ever remember the Reds being on WHAS in my lifetime. The list above concurs to my memory.

I'm slightly confused, WLW should come in reasonably good in Louisville. It's barely outside the main listening area.

Much of the reason is sales potential. Yes, WLW covers Louisville during the day (night signal does suffer from cancellation) but they don't sell Louisville.

By the way, I wonder how easy it is to sell the Reds sell these days compared to, let say, twenty-five years ago?

Me neither. When would this have been? Prior to 1972 when I started in broadcasting or not at all.

That would make some sense.. With 93.9 central to downtown and 105.9 (and already selling off the more skewed north and east signal of 104.3), that would position them central to the Valley Station skewing west... We'll see....

I heard today that 93.9 was purchased by WAY FM. Any thoughts?

No, that makes no sense. WAYI 105.9 already has a construction permit to move to the same tower with WSFR and WGZB. I can't see them doing both.
They have a null spec'd at 40 degrees...that's WPFB-FM Middletown,OH on 105.9. Wonder what the 350 - 360 mid point null is?? WWWY 106.1/North Vernon,IN is at 10 degrees and the null from WAYI is not as deep there as it is at 350 - 360.

"I can remember the two seasons - 1963 & 1971 - that WHAS in Louisville was on the the Reds Network. The few times the games were pre-empted was due to the Derby or U.K. football. Unfortunately, neither of those seasons were good ones for the Reds."

This was referenced in the "Reds on 1570 WNDA" thread here in the Kentucky section. I imagine these were the seasons Joe Elliott was referring to. Again before my time. I mostly remember them on 790 WAKY and also on 970 WAVE.

The CP for WAYI gives a little better coverage in the East End and in Shelbyville. It is not uncommon for WPFB and WNRQ to be heard in Shelby County, sometimes quite clearly; on occasion both of those can be heard in the East End. I have even been able to pick up WZNO on rare occasion, although I'd imagine that comes from serious ducting.

It's not much of an improvement. The CP pushes the 50db contour just over into Shelby county.

I'm hearing buzz that WQKC (AM 1450) is soon to be LMA'ed (with option to buy) to the Smith brothers of WNDA/WTSZ/WKYI. This would be a very good thing, because the Smiths are solid, responsible station operators. With all the sports they now have on WNDA, WQKC's 1kw/U signal would push their contour further than WNDA and spread the programming load.

I understand ESPN Radio has expressed approval of such a move...they want their signal back in the Louisville market quickly!

The studio building on Magnolia Ave. off Spring Street in Jeff was maintained and kept intact by Cumulus even after the control point was moved to NE Louisville and it was used only as a transmitter site...it's ready to go.

(Wonder if the calls WXVW are once again available?)
