CUMULUS SHUT DOWN IN LOUISVILLE?

Would Salem be eligible to get 105.9 back?

I don't see why not. They aren't near the ownership cap on the FM side; it would make sense to simulcast another one of their AMs there (perhaps WGTK) in preparation for AM's eventual demise.

Of course, it will come down to $

Any news about 1450? I was hoping WNDA could get it, change calls to WXVW, and simulcast ''Kool Oldies'' on there.
WNDA could use another outlet. They are currently the affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana University football and Southern Indiana High School football, leading to a tremendous amount of conflicts in schedule. The Reds weren't on today because of the IU game.

So who would be interested in 105.9 and/or 104.3? I could see 104.3 The Beat eventually moving to 105.9, with 104.3 becoming a simulcast partner for WJIE, WAKY, WJLR, WTUV, or one of the Elizabethtown stations.
With the success of B96's Gospel Music program on Sunday mornings, it would be nice if WLOU's format could move to FM. However, they would have to start from scratch by hiring an engineer, a sales staff, a new programming director, new equipment, finances, etc., etc., etc. I guess this is only wishful thinking. Simulcasting WTUV would be beneficial since 105.7 is non-existence throughout much of Louisville.

I still believe that there will soon be a LMA w/option or outright buy of WQKC's (AM 1450) license and building on Magnolia Ave. in Jeffersonville, possibly to WNDA (hopefully, the Smiths will give it a go). This will give WNDA programming space for its many sports offerings, better signal coverage, and more inventory to sell.

As far as music programming, I'd keep "Kool Oldies" on WNDA (1570/1600), and introduce the excellent "Timeless Cool' adult standards on 1450...with a call letter change back to heritage WXVW. This will give the combo a niche in the growing 35+ demos, reinforced by the sports.

Ummmm.... let's see. Who owned 105.9 before WAY-FM?

Salem. Your point?

Didn't Clear Channel own it, since the calls were QNF at one point?

Is "Timeless Cool" currently streamed anywhere?

My point is that if it was such a good idea for Salem to simulcast one of their AMs on 105.9 to prepare for AM's eventual demise, then why did they sell 105.9 to begin with?

And no, Clear Channel never owned 105.9. It was owned by Otting Broadcasting when it was WQNF, and Otting sold it to Cox in 1997.

Cox sold it in 1999 when they bought three better signals, which would have put them over the legal ownership limit.

Salem ended up with it later that year.

I see where WAY-FM is in the process of purchasing it. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning here. Are they just wanting a better signal over downtown?

I didn't realize 105.9 was part of the "Diamond John" Otting empire. I had heard that Ray "Honeythroat" Shelton had some part in getting the station on the air.

As far as 105.9 goes, it was originally WVSL, put on the air by Ray Shelton. I believe that John Otting was only able to LMA the station because at that time, one company couldn't own more than 1 F.M. in a market. 'QMF 2 started 9-1-93.
After WQNF on 105.9 came WXNU, WHTE, WRVI, and WAYI. What's next?

By the time 105.9 hit the airwaves in 1993, I thought 106.9 and 100.5 were owned by the same company, as well as, 96.5 and 101.7 and also 99.7 and 103.9.

WAY-FM is aggressively promoting the new 93.9 frequency on almost every break and stopset. The mention of 105.9 is almost non-existent, except for the hourly legal ID. Many listeners have responded by stating they receive a clearer signal on 93.9. Congrats to WAY-FM. They have created a tremendous community outreach with the small signal on 105.9. I with them continual success.

You may very well be right, but a few years later Otting was able to own 105.9 outright and in fact they did.

Radiofan502 is also correct- 100.5, 106.9 and 790 AM were all owned by Prism Broadcasting in the early 1990s, and the stations were operated out of the Marmaduke building in the suites where Mainline Broadcasting now resides.

The big trade in 1996 after the deregulation sent 100.5 and 790 to Clear Channel, and 106.9 to Jacor, with Jacor spinning off 1080 to Clear Channel in the deal.

Clear Channel later bought 95.7, and Jacor bought 102.3.

So in 1998 you had Clear Channel pretty much as it currently exists (minus the Shelbyville facilities) and Jacor had 99.7, 102.3, 103.9, 106.9, 107.7, and 900.

When Jacor was bought by Clear Channel, ownership rules required that all of Louisville Jacor be sold. It was split between Cox and Blue chip- with Cox acquiring 103.9, 106.9, and 107.7. (And spinning off 94.7 and 105.9)

And Blue Chip, which already owned 96.5 and 101.7, acquired 99.7, 102.3, and 900 AM.

Ah, Prism Radio. I loved working for them. Actually, Greg, we started out in the old WAKY building on 4th Street. When I got hired at the Fox in July of 93, we were broadcasting from what used to be the WAKY production room. Rotary pots and all. Back when radio was still fun.

The WAY-FM website for Louisville also reflects the change: "Louder and clearer on the 93.9 WAY-FM". I think it is a good move for WAY. They are a good station and I have been listening to them increasingly over the last several weeks. I wonder what will become of 105.9. They aren't promoting it as a simulcast, like they did with 104.3/105.9.
