Cumulus starts cutting

I kind of thought R & S and the Kicks crew would be "safe" for a little while (two of three ratings periods) with former Kicks GM Paul O Malley running the cluster. I just keep on wondering what demo do TRG do so well that they are still on? Or do they have some pictures of somebody?

I my best guess for R & S to stay in this market would be if CBS gets tried Adult Alternative 92.9 being a sub 15 (6+ beauty contest). It is one of the two C's with an intown and antenna at the highest height 1115. (99.7 is also at 1115). I still think but dread that WZGC will be all news someday with CBS having high billing all news operations in other cities.

Another weird possibility is if 1010 can get their 25 KW night service that covers a large part of the market 24 /7. I know music on AM is hard but R & S has an older audience some of us do push the AM button once in the while.

Any chance of WNNX/100.5 moving down to 106.7 and 100.5 becoming WCNN-FM by the way of a "family" LMA?
???
That would work (WCNN on 100.5) and probably be the final nail in the Zone's coffin.

I don't think that Rock100.5 would make the trip to 106.7, unless Cumulus wants to give it one last chance against River. I'm still thinking Journey goes to 106.7, although B98.5's recent success may have them second-guessing that. Rock 100.5 would go to one of the translators (but would TRG make the trip?), and TOC to the other. Meanwhile, 99X keeps stinking up the joint ratings-wise, so if 99X never gets any real traction once they quit moving around for a while they could be 86ed altogether.

I don't see why R&S would be let go unless they were wanting to blow up the joint soon and get out of old pop music formats altogether. Although R&S on a Journey 106.7 would still make some sense (still a bit old for the target demo).

Here's an idea--how about a comedy station on a translator, anchored by TRG in the AM? Turn off the stereo and get some more coverage. Alternatively, keep TRG on 100.5 while simuling WCNN the rest of the time. Sports radio with a choice of morning shows. TRG must be doing something right because their spot load is so heavy as to almost be unlistenable.

CBS could blow up Dave and put all-news on, but then they would be running right into You Know Who on AM 750 and NOW 95.5 FM.

I noticed they cut off the HD feeds on WYAY also.

That just temporary and unrelated. They are diplexed with 104.7 and their main antenna burned out. They are using the HD antenna as a back up until the main antenna is repaired/replaced.

I just saw on Kicks website this morning that Greg Tallmadge is gone,I hate that he is such good personality and when you met him at remotes he was always very freindly.

He is? That's not what I heard.

This is from the other Cumulus thread:

Sales will begin moving to Glenridge next week. Studios for K and Y are being built. Programming (those that make it) will move in January. Kicks GM Paul O Malley has been named cluster VP for the entire cluster ... Q, Rock, 99x, KICKS, Y and Journey.

I say it since no one has. 680 on 106.7. Done.

If you continue to aggregate sports on a station, the 106.7 signal is a no starter. You need a signal that looks directly in to the sports venues downtown. any of the "in town" full power FMs do this. 106.7 is to far out. The teams would not care for that. (Granted you could do sports on 106.7---but you would probably need to put the PBP somewhere else to keep the team happy...)

It's sad to hear four of the finest broadcaters I have ever worked with were tossed out after over 50 combined years of dedicated service. What makes them great people will carry them to new highs in the next chapters of their lives. Chad, Christy, Greg, Bill and I all had a great run at 210 Interstate North. I am glad they were part of my life and would not trade the memories we share for anything. Good luck to them and the others who were let go.

Facts

1 Paul Omalley is the Market VP/GM for both the Cumulus and Citadel stations.
2 WKHX and WYAY are moving to 780 Johnson Ferry Road.
3 The Promotions Director, one of the three engineers, the WKHX afternoon jock, The WYAY morning show, one of the two sales managers, webmaster and the morning traffic person were let go yesterday.
4 The HD2 on WYAY is off the air due to master antenna issues and WYAY is using its HD antenna to broadcast its analog signal

anything else regarding this thread is supposition and rumor

I'm betting 106.7 is getting blown up. What a shame for Randy and Spiff and everyone who lost their jobs. Guess Cumulus will set the Atlanta great standard by running all of their stations with 3 people. Oh, wait, Clear Channel already did that and we can only hope Cumulus will have the same broadcast excellence!

4.5 The master antenna and combiner should have been an ERI system. This is what happens when a good deal is forced on you vs. purchasing something of good value. The cost of repairs and downtime have probably been greater the cost differential. Engineers seldom win arguments with buyers and buyers never fix things they force you to buy.

I somewhat disagree with this...Sports Radio needs to reach the outer suburbs (Cumming, Alpharetta, Woodstock, Duluth, etc.), and the current translator doesn't do that very well. I can get it in Woodstock and Acworth on many nights...but it's unreliable.

That said - I don't think it would be the nail in the coffin of 790. They still have their loyalists, and the FM simulcast on 680 hasn't gotten rid of their core 25-54 listeners.

Why not move 99x to 106.7? That would give Atlanta and Athens an Alternative station. I believe the last Alternative station Athens had (WPUP 103.7) flipped to Classic Rock back in 1996. Can't argue that Alternative and/or AAA would do well with Athens coverage.

My two week vacation in Aruba is just about over - unfortunately. I knew while I was gone, something big would happen. I'll have to catch up the ajc.com readers when I get back Monday. That's a lot to absorb!
