RDU, I just asked - particularly about the financial part. Please remember, as baby boomers trurn 60 there is pleanty of disposable income. Not suggesting Maury had a young audience, but I suspect the station was a financial success with him. The question was - was Kevin's show a financial success - and you say it was.

I know Kevin was a self promoter. I saw his name in Talkers a lot, he made their list of the Top 100 Talk Hosts in America, and he did get some national exposure. However it is local exposure that counts. I suspect WPTF suffers from the same issue most radio stations suffer from today - a lack of promotion and marketing.

Didn't really know Kevin, just that the two times I had dealing with him it would obvious he felt the world was revolving around him.

Slogan is right about yellers! It starts at the top and second level managers pick it up. They get yelled at, so they yell at their staff!

I guess if that last theory is right then Kevin must have gotten yelled at a lot by people above him, because he sure did yell a lot at people who were trying to do their best. Nothing is good enough for him, and the smallest mistake would send him into a fit that would last the rest of the week. And I don't know what the big deal is about the illegals. They work hard and seem to have a big audience. What's wrong with that?

What is the part of the word "illegal" you don't understand? Jimmy Hoffa worked hard - look what it got him!

He's an okay host, but I think people have gotten tired of his yelling at people. Even the smallest mistake would cause him to start yelling, unless the mistake was made by someone who sucked up to him. Honestly, I think the people above Kevin had had enough and that something would have happened, even if he hadn't got the Nashville job. Hopefully, we'll get someone who doesn't expect everyone to be as perfect as he is.

I've listened to the show since he got there and I can tell you that his mood does get transmitted over the airwaves. I have heard him at least twice yelling/whining at the production staff for having something or the other coming in too loud on his headset. "Would you turn that down? Please?? ::)" (Yeah, I heard his eyes rolling...)

I've also heard guests and callers alike talking about something interesting with passion...and Mr. Miller's attitude towards them was like "Whooptie doo! Who gives a fig?"

I'm not trying to bash him...just pointing out some things I've noticed. Overall, he does a good show in the mornings, and none of the above has kept me from enjoying listening to him.

Interesting how a question about people leaving and illegals working at Curtis turns into a throw Kevin under the bus free for all.

Well, I 'm finished on the Kevin subject and I did try to answer on the "illegals". No clue! Laley really does keep to themselves. It's hard to befriend people when they speak NO english, but they are friendly enough. But, really what proof is there that they are illegal other than a rumor someone started? Spanish speaking doesn't always equal illegal. I think someone is just having some mean-spirited fun.

On the subject of anyone else leaving....I don't see anyone else going in the near future. As far as I can see Bill Lumaye is a popular guy in the building, so I'm not sure where the "him not being liked comes from". I've never heard a bad word about him. Honestly, I don't know him that well personally, but I have heard NO talk in the building about him or anyone else leaving. The WPTF ship is tilted a little bit...they are going to re-organize the deck a bit, take on a few new crew members and it will be smooth sailing again. No sinking ships here!

Guess this answers my earlier question about why Steele wasn't the new WPTF PD. All Access says he turned it down and is leaving after his contract is up.

If morale is okay (as previous posters have stated) and the ratings seem to be okay as well, why the mass exodus? There must be some reason or reasons for what, at least four people giving notice at the same time?

Is the station's on air product strong enough to withstand this big a change?

It hasn't been all at the same time. They were fairly spaced apart, some gave lengthy notices and some are positions that they have been trying to fill for awhile. Some I think might just be rumor or specualtion...someone earlier mentioned the HR person leaving and I haven't seen any indication that she is.

According to All Access - Raleigh's Mayor CHARLES MEEKER has declared TODAY (8/11) "KEVIN MILLER DAY" in the city. The honor celebrates Miller's "years of service to the city."

Yeah, Kevin also worked with Meeker to create "Clay Aiken Day" so....nuff said.

Boy that mayor sure must have had it in for Maury O'Dell, Bart Ritner, and all the other people who got ashcanned during the past two "years" LOL

Myself, I've found his show(and the whole station for the most part) to be rather bland and boring. Then again, I've spent the past several years (before moving to Raleigh a year and half ago) listening to stations such as WLW, WIBC, WLS, and WGN, among others, that all seem to have much more energy and enthusiasm than WPTF. One other thing I've noticed; is how nonchalantly WPTF seems to take severe weather outbreaks. There have been quite a few times when we've had several warnings issued, and I've turned to PTF to find out more, only to hear Hannity, Rush, or whoever was on at that time. Back in Indy, whenever severe weather breaks out, WIBC would be on top of things, interrupting regular programming to inform where the storms were, giving damage reports, reporting where power outages or traffic light problems were, even taking calls from listeners in affected areas to get more details of what was happening.

As far as Steele leaving, no big loss. All he does is suck up to Kevin so he doesn't get yelled at for no reason like the rest of us. And I wish people would stop talking about the illegals working on the FM. If you are going after them, then you also have to go after the illegals who work at McDonald's, the maids at the hotels, and just about every construction worker in the area.

It is difficult to comment not knowing the personal history of Kevin and Ray and their relationship with other WPTF employees, but it sure does sound like Trag and some of the other people posting on this thread are very brave in confronting the two of them as long as it is within the message board and not person-to-person. I don't think I have been around anyone who yelled at people as much as Kevin is purported to have yelled at some of you who have posted here. If what they say is true, then he must spend every waking minute yelling at someone. I doubt that is the case. It sounds too much like sour grapes from people who didn't make the cut. Again, if he truly were that bad, Kevin would have been gone a long time ago.

And having listened to and enjoyed his news and sports reports, it is too bad that Steele will not be the program director. Slogan is right...there must be an underlying reason for him and the others to decide it is time to go. Maybe they don't want to be criticized behind their backs by their co-workers anymore, as has been the case with Kevin quite often on this message board.

I think Trag has serious denial problems...I wonder if the illegals took his/her job would the feeling be the same. If we all approached every issue with, well yea that's a problem but it's the same as at WalMart, McDonalds etc. etc..we'd have a wonderful world. Illegals in a government monitored facility is incredible..especially with Mr. Curtis' reputation.
Steele not taking the job would seem to be an indication that there are issues...

First off, the illegals will never take my job. Second, you can say what you want about Zachary, but I think he did the right thing in getting Kevin and Ray out of here, which is what I think really happened. Good for him. He has the best interests of the station and not himself in mind, and getting rid of Kevin and Ray will mean good things for WPTF, especially if we get a morning show host that cares about the station and not promoting himself.

I'm guessing this Zachary is the big boss over at Curtis, judging by the way a couple of people posting on the thread have talked about him. If that's the case and if he did indeed force out Kevin and Ray, someone should force him out, as that would be just a stupid move on his part. Not quite as stupid as openly employing illegal immigrants, if that's true, but almost. I can see Kevin and Ray leaving for better things, but surely the executives there aren't dumb enough to push them out the door.

Having listened to Millers on air show, which is akin to taking four vicodin and shooting a half bottle of Jameson's, and having worked for Pre-Cumulus WTN, Miller is going to wish he was back in Raleigh before Christmas.
