curtis in Raleigh

I bet Harlow and Zachary are both laughing at this. Knowing them both and having worked for one I can say Dick throws the best Christmas parties but Zachary is the guy I would rather go into battle with.

Personally, I would be torn to choose. They both have strengths that the other doesn't have. Dick may have changed down through the years...I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that Zachary is at the top of his game right now. It just makes me feel good that two guys, at their ages, (not that they're old) are still playing the radio game in a big way. Lots of experience and lots of success under their belts. Cheers to them both and may the best man win!

I'd hate to have to do battle with either of them. I also know them both personally, and likewise worked for one of them. My wife also worked for one of them.

I competed against Phil and Co in Raleigh. Talented staph. CC has more resources compared to CMG, but CMG does A LOT with what they have, and it shows.

I worked with Harlow when he was a sales manager (WYYD, Raleigh). He's a smart guy, who knows how to have a good time. SOX has got to have driven him nuts over the last couple of years.

Hello boards! I've been looking for a forum like this for some time, because, as another 'PTF alumnus (from the mid-to-late-80s/early 90s, the old
"Durham Life" days), I have a lot of venting to do about the current state of affairs at what was ONCE a great news/talk station. I still listen just about
every morning/afternoon, with my jaw dropping at the absolute lack of anything even remotely resembling professionalism on
that station of Rush wannabees.

First of all, Kevin Miller was absolutely horrendous, and Rick and Donna Martinez are only marginally better.
Please, oh please...get better SOON Jack Boston! If I have to hear Donna one more time refer to
her husband as "the Navy Veteran", or hear her say of the Iraq War, "If we Dont Beat Them Over There, we'll
have to Fight Them over Here", I'll Screeeeeaaaaaammmmmmm!!!!!!! She sounds about as dumb as a box of nails.

and Don't even get me started on Bill Duuhhh-Maye. Geez...what a right wing hack he is. Pleeez go back to Wisconsin, or
whatever hole you crawled out of Billy-boy! And all I can say about Neal Boortz is....WTF?? Who agrees with
this horrible racist?

Why must this area, known as one of the best places to live in the country, with an abundance of
well-educated and progressive residents, be subject to the right-wing drivel the folks at WPTF (We Promote The Fascists) force
on us 24-7 (except when Bob Langford is allowed his 10-minutes of airtime a week)??? It's just a terrible shame.

Some here have expressed some faith that WPTF will "right the ship"...but I wouldn't count on it. They've already lost
so much credibility among folks who USED to listen to their news coverage, I just don't see them ever getting back
to where they once were, ratings and financials aside.

Thanks for lettting me vent.

Might want to try NPR on WFDD. Slightly more balanced than Neil Bortz. ;)

Hey, www.HollandCooke.com, since you read and participate on these boards and advise WPTF these days, what is your response to 80snewsguy's lament on 'PTF programming/news?

Everyone probably knows that 80sNewsGuy is the washed up, bitter, [removed], radio wannabee Ralph Shaw, who is trying to buy his way back into the business. WPTF couldn't stand his sorry attitude, and neither could Bradsher's station in Roxboro. Go away Ralph and stay away. We're on to you and nobody wants you.

LOL! I never knew Ralph, but we did swap tape between my station (WPTF) and his (WRJR/SJS? I think) newsrooms
back in the day. He'd probably remember my air-name (which I ain't revealing here) from the AP Wire feeds, but we've never met.

80sNewsGuy may not be Ralph Shaw but he does share his fondness for the past. Perhaps someone can remind them both just how piss-poor WPTF sounded in the 80s and 90s despite having a payroll that could choke a television station. That station was the joke of local radio but they wouldn't know it because they were so insulated in Durham Life La La Land.

Overall had a good experience working with CMG in 2000 through 2002. Be it a good or bad radio station through the years an uneducated guess is the trip to the bank has been one most of us could only ever dream about and the return from them to the community has been above significant.

hmm, not sure about the "fondness for the past" comment. Even when I worked at WPTF, I realized it was something of a dinosaur...and while at times may have sounded "piss-poor", at least there was some
attempt at objectivity and fairness from the news-talk standpoint. Especially during the
"Mornings with Maury" morning show, which was pretty much middle-of-the-road, and apolitical.

My main complaint with them now is they seem to have been completely taken over by wingnuts from the Planet Rush-bo. I guess it pays the bills.

I've also been far, far away from the radio business for about 13 years now...so no, I'm not speaking from any standpoint of bitterness or jealousy or anything like that. Just someone who has always seen potential
for entertaining and informative talk-radio in the triangle, and hopes it will return someday.

The meteoric success of Air America (sarcasm) should be your hint "80s News Hack".
Rush draws listeners. Former WPTF pm talk host Jerry Agar is now at WLS
Chicago. 'PTF's done pretty well since you've been gone.

There's also talk on 101.1, 91.5, 1360, and 570. If you're looking for other talk
content, it's out there.

I'm not "looking for other talk content", surfdweeb.

I listen to Stephanie Miller, Al Franken, and Randi Rhodes
all the day long on what George Bush would call "the Internets".

I'm just offering my opinion that WPTF, in 2006, sucks "major ass".
That's what makes them so fun to listen to!

Whassamatter...can't you dittoheads take a little criticism?

As I am trying to bow out of this business gracefully and bid farewell, I am shocked at the ridiculous accusations posted recently by, yet, more people hiding behind screen names. It's obvious you don't know or care about the truth but are very good at spreading false information!

If any of you have a problem with me, please be an adult and address me one-on-one in a mature way. Slinging "XXXX" at me, as has been done on this thread, is hurting no one but yourself!

It really hasn't hurt me at all Ralph. I DIG IT!

shift gears, boy. if u can't find it, grind it...

Someone mentioned that former WPTF afternoon personality is on WLS. If you will check out the WABC website you will notice that Jerry Agar is on 77 WABC week nights from 8:00 - 10:00 pm. I really miss listening to Jerry on WPTF. He didn't mind giving his opinon and could always back it up. He was well read and entertaining. Jerry left Raleigh to work for the Entercom station in Kansas City, KMBZ. And he is now in New York. Not a bad career move. Bill Lumay just doesn't measure up. He doesn't seem to have the passion and knowlege Agar had. Guess that's why he's in Raleigh and Agar is in New York. And its a shame that a 50,000 watt station in North Carolina's capital city has to tape delay a syndicated show (Clark Howard) from 9 - noon each weekday. Sometimes they even replay the same Clark Howard show a week or 2 later. As for Air America, if its so great, you would think a real radio station (over the air) would carry it. I guess Air Americia is too much like NPR. Didn't Air America file for bankruptcy a few months ago?

"It's obvious you don't know or care about the truth but are very good at spreading false information!"

That, Ralph, is the "dittohead" in a nutshell, isn't it? A Tiger cannot change it's stripes.

While we are on the subject of former WPTF talk show hosts, anyone else remember
"Wrestle with Kwessle"? (may have spelled the name wrong) LOL...I used to work with
that guy in the afternoons...where did he end up I wonder?

I've heard a lot about Jerry Agar, but for some reason either I never heard him, or
at least don't remember him on the air. As for Bill Duh-Maye...he just reads his
Limbaugh letter talking points, and tries to stir as much indignation as possible at "those Liberals!"
Yawn. I think the November elections sent him (and his good buddy Vermin Robinson)
a pretty good "smackdown" message as well.

(People want substance these days, Bill. You might try it sometime.)

Bob Kwessel worked at WFNC-AM in Fayetteville after he was fired by WPTF, and later relocated to the Washington DC area. With a little more polish and brains and professional management he might have gotten where Limbaugh has been all these years. I think Kwessel was on the air on WPTF about the same time that Rush was in Sacramento, before he went national. Regarding Rick and Donna, they have done a good job on WPTF since Jack Boston got sick. Especially Donna--she is articulate, smart, well prepared and very much a class act.
