Cuts at Citadel Buffalo?

I am in the business as well, but i try very hard not to demean people. No one in here knows everything, and no one is perfect. Lets's talk about how we can improve our industry though ideas, and strategies. Not finger pointing and hurtful words

Rox has apologized for misspeaking.....I think he didn't mean to be hurtful.

Let's move on, shall we?

I believe the quote was:

"I'm not sure how much Gail Ann will be missed"

This is what people are still wringing their hands over?

"I'M NOT SURE how much Gail Ann will be missed"?

C'mon. No offense, but if this comment is that big a deal, you're in the wrong business. Gail Ann included.

Note to Gail Ann: Ever been fired and had not-so-nice things said in the NEWSPAPER about you? THAT is a bummer, but can be a reality for some.

If there was ever a time for this advice in this business, it's NOW: Toughen up. Times aren't getting any easier.

Hello to all the radio posters. I came to this site to see who else at Citadel had been cut. Yes....I was one of them. My name is Gail Ann Huber. Thanks for assuming that I won't be missed Sirox...whatever. I was with the station for nearly six years and did an awful lot for Citadel, but mostly, I enjoyed my job.

I am a single parent of two young children and doing this job allowed me the opportunity to pay my mortgage, have a vehicle and live life in general. We are not an extravagant family by any means, but we survived on my check.

Losing a job sucks, but when you read comments about "not being missed", it sucks double. Please allow those of us who have had our lives upended a little time to lick our wounds. Have a little respect for us and the fact that we have carried the torch in a very uncertain time for radio.

Slick Tom....if you're out there....I love ya man! And to all my radio friends, God Bless and go fight the good fight for Slick and me!

The Slick tom Morning Show on Jack. That's a superb idea with great counter-programming possibilities. The only downside is, Slick Tom would have to transition from nights to mornings and he's been known to tell listeners that he's not a morning person. I heard a phone bit Slick did a few months ago where some guy was talking about something Norton did on the morning show. Slick Tom replied that he usually falls asleep around 6 a.m. and misses most of Norton's show.
Jack would never do that, why hire jocks when the format has solid numbers with running autopilot? More money going to inept shady program directors, general managers and CEO's who are greedy, egotistical, pompous and make far too much money, by doing nothing.

I see 97 Rock has added an hour to Russo's show and in Slick Tom's place it's the "97 Rock Night Flight". I really like 97 Rock because of their on-air personalities and Slick Tom will certainly be missed in that area. I won't bother tuning in the Night Flight and I imagine I'm not alone in that regard. We'll miss you Slick!

Wasn't "Night Flight" a late night weekend music video show that was on the USA network many years ago?

There were a few days when I thought Tom Tiberi's "release" was just another notorious 97 Rock promotion stunt. Unfortunately, the more I read here and elsewhere, the more I hear through the grapevine, clearly IT'S THE ECONOMY (stupid)!

The Wall Street Journal featured a story about the heavy debt shouldered by media companies. It's astounding! The Journal story featured a quote from Citadel's CEO, Farid Suleman, "It's grim," says Farid Suleman, chief executive of Citadel Broadcasting Corp., owner of a radio network and more than 200 radio stations in many of the nation's largest markets. He describes current conditions as "absolutely the worst I've seen."

Another radio executive is quoted, saying, "We're in crisis mode."

To which I reply, "No freakin' spit, Sherlock! You just wrapped your head around this?"

Then, there are the words of average men and women who've toiled in radio as salesmen, on air personalities and program directors. Over the years, most of these people looked at consolidation from the belly of the beast and they intuitively knew it wasn't good, but what could they do? Only their jobs.

A seasoned friend of mine, just after the Telecommunications Act was passed in the mid-90s and his station gobbled up two competing FM's in the same market, told me, "It's just a matter of time before the whole s*ithouse goes up in flames." While his co-workers were high-fiving each other and talking trash about how their cluster "owned the market," my friend was thinking that there were two fewer stations to work for if and when he got blown out. And he correctly predicted that his growing five station cluster would be bought out by a bigger national company.

Within a few years, all that he dreaded happened. First came the buy-out, followed by firings. After he caught a bullet, he packed up his family and moved 800 miles to a larger market, where he was hired to do afternoon drive at a station that was part of a six station cluster owned by another large company.

Economist Robert Reich recently authored an article on the economy. It can be read on Truthout. Aghast! Some will accuse me of being a left wing redistributionist, marxist, socialist. Just remember, I also supplied quotes from the Wall Street Journal, to which I subscribe.

In the article, Reich says, "The real problem is on the demand side of the economy. Consumers won't or can't borrow because they're at the end of their ropes. Their incomes are dropping (one of the most sobering statistics in Friday's jobs report was the continued erosion of real median earnings), they're deeply in debt, and they're afraid of losing their jobs."

Fear.

The stock markets have shifted from running on irrational exuberance to unabated fear and it's directly affecting the lives of millions of Americans. As of last month, an estimated 10 million Americans are unemployed. That's ten million people who aren't buying refrigerators, stoves, microwave ovens, to say nothing of purchasing cars and houses. (Here's where I stray off the radio runway and say, "But that's Okay, because some politicians actually believed "the fundamentals of our economy are (were) sound." Sorry. I'll behave... and refrain from quoting myself. )

Think it's bad now? Wait until March. God help us if GM, Ford and Chrysler shut down. Yeah, I'm a bundle of joy and a ray of sunshine, ain't I.

Remember the Great Depression that some of our parents of grandparents lived through, those stories about food rationing, collecting rubber and scrap metal, and victory gardens in WW2? I don't think my old man was much different from yours when he told me, "Son, there's no free lunch. Borrow wisely and always pay your bills on time. And pay in cash." Wish my old man could have talked some sense into these barons of broadcasting who had a woodie for getting bigger, faster so they could reach critical mass.

How long might it be before we see "average Buffalonians" picking up empty cans and bottles in the parking lots after Bills and Sabres games, competing with the men and women who for years, have been collecting our cast-off Labatt and Pepsi cans. Don't laugh. I've kinda considered it myself. Five hundred cans equals 25 bucks. Tax free.

It's just a matter of time before the radio and TV companies treck to Capital Hill to plead their case for a public hand out. From what I've read on these boards, most posters always wanted to own a radio station, so congratulations! You're now all invited to pick a market and voicetrack a daypart.

I don't think that would ever happen. I'd love to see it though as maybe the new administration would choose to "redistribute" their licenses.

LOL. :D Careful, you'll be branded by the B&B boys as "socialists." BTW, Entercom today (11/12) closed at 66 cents a share. Apparently, lots of holders have re-distributed Entercom stock.

Not sure if I care what B&B think.

What would they call government bailouts of companies that make poor decisions?

Decisions, Decisions

ThePickleReport said:

Corporate welfare.

I think that they ought to add a restriction to any bailout money that any corporation that accepts the peoples' funds MAY NOT pay bonuses to executives. If their division needs a bailout, they obviously don't deserve a bonus.

To get back to the original topic, how will the cuts at Citadel, Entercom, and Regent affect the bottom line? How much revenue will 97-Rock lose compared to Tiberi's salary? Will 'JYE lose revenue in PM drive without Galli?

One last thought... This would be perfect timing for Jack to do something with the morning show. It's peaked as a "more music morning show". Adding somebody like Tiberi, who has massive name recognition, changes the morning dynamic at the same time that The Edge morning show has a new host (Bull), and WHTT is undergoing "adjustments".

A move like that could mean a couple of shares for Jack. The increased revenue would more than pay for Slick Tom, and probably mean better numbers for the rest of the day.

Announcement regarding Slick Tom

A special announcement regarding Slick Tom

Dear 97 Rock Listener,

Unfortunately we’ve had to take Slick Tom off the 7-Midnight show due to a big business slowdown. We hope that this is only a temporary situation.

Tom has been great during this period and we’ll be working to keep him involved with 97 Rock as much as possible in the meantime.

We know how important Slick is to 97 Rock, as well as to his listeners and fans, and we hope to get him back as quickly as possible.

That's better for him than finding a new job, but Mr. Hager has to be one of the most loyal PD's for the jocks he hires.

In a Perfect World...

I personally hope that taking Slick off 7-Mid bites Citadel so hard in their assets that they're forced to bring him back - and that he demands a raise!

I miss my morning Gail on 104. Her and Bill were like pea's and carrots. It's just not the same without her. :'(
I can think of someone else that could have cut, but I wont name names. Gail brought a real sense of family and reality to the show. For us working mothers, she was a staple for our ride to work. She is sorley missed by more than me. Here's hoping she finds a position she loves just as much really soon. We love you Gail!! :) As for slick Tom they could have gotten rid of one of those morning clowns instead. He was a big part of why I listened to 97 Rock. Thanks for listening.

Would Slick Tom's schtick work in the morning? And isn't his routine a bit too racy for Jack? Stern's antics didn't seem to fit with the station. It would be unfortunate to see a guy of Slick Tom's talent off the airwaves permanantly. His care free demeanor certainly fits Jack, but when's the last time a DJ was hired in the current environment.

If Slick isn't hired back by 97 Rock, who else would want his services? Or is he destined to be another DJ sent to early retirement?

If Only...

It seems to me that there's a lot of talent walking around loose out there. If one of the "also rans" could scrape up a few bucks, they could put together a very interesting radio station.

How about Entercom empties "The Lake" and brings back "The Bear"?

Forget the Bear, I wouldn't be surprised if Entercom is looking for any excuse to slap WBEN on an FM signal.
