Ah, yes...... DJ nightmares. I know them well! My first experience was in 1982 at an AM and FM combo in Brockton, MA (WBET/WCAV). I was attending college in the day and I had the evening shift (6 til midnight). I was doing it live on the AM side while the FM side was on autopilot (completely automated Stereo rock). The automation was called "SAM" (Semi Automated Machine). Anytime the "SAM Alarm" (a bright green light on the wall with an audible buzzer) would light, I had to run to the other side of the station to see what was wrong. 99% of the time, it was because of a missed event. The FM was an afterthought and had very few sponsors. Nonetheless it had to be babysat. I HATED that automation with a passion.
Now, back to those nightmares...... I was about two to three weeks into my tour of duty. I was tired as hell. One night, I had a nightmare where I was dreaming about being in the studio doing my shift. Threw a cart for the next tune and ...... nothing! Next, I tried the turntable. It moved but no sound was present. It was dead! The only thing that moved the meters was the on-air mike. SO here I was with an open mike and in a panic. The SAM alarm was blinking. I found myself saying "WBET/1460" in my sleep and woke up in a cold sweat trying to fire a cart from an non-existant cart machine and found myself sitting up in a dark bedroom. It seemed so real. WHEW! This would happen for a few times. Eventually, the nightmares subsided. I wound up working for WBET/WCAV for 9 great years. It was like 'KRP in the flesh. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
