Dallas Cowboys Radio Network grade

i heard Sham say once on the air ( about 12 yrs ago)...

" i try to give the listener the most objective broadcast i can, from the Cowboys' point of view."

in other words, there is no WE or US.

Brad leaves that to the Dave Souths of the world.....

Craig Way calls a great game too, by the way....

Funny,Brad has seemed to have strayed away from that most of the time.

Depends on how you grade him. If you compare him ONLY to other home town radio play-by-play voices, then he's pretty objective. Maybe as objective as they come.

But if you are listening to Network broadcasts where no one in the booth covers either team specifically, then you'll think of Sham as more of a homer.

As far as Charlie Waters goes, any time a former player for a team is in that team's radio booth, seems to me he has the right to say "we." It's when broadcasters, who never played, say "we" that it gets offensive. A guy like Laufenberg, who bounced around the NFL during his career, logically shies away from using "we."

But if KTCK has done anything... it has made Sham into more of a transparent homer. Is it just me or does Sturm bust out the bass in his voice (even more than he already does) when the Ticket transforms into the the "flagship of the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network"?!

It's not a KTCK thing...Sham is not an employee of KTCK, but rather an employee of the Dallas Cowboys now. This was a topic on KTCK one afternoon shortly after they picked up the rights...the growing trend of NFL rights where the announcers are picked by the team and on the team's payroll rather than by the station that has the rights.

So, Brad, Charlie, Mickey's "Ranch Reports", etc. are going to be overtly pro-Cowboys; they're all products of the Cowboys marketing department.

Trust me, I completely understand who signs Sham's check, but the Ticket brings an attitude, a swagger to radio that Brad is unacquainted with. The closest he got to that with hanging out with Dale and providing color to Mr. "Bowling for Dollars." That's all I was saying. You can tell he is waxing a bit more homer-ish during those heavily produced talk shows at Hooters

I wouldn't assume THAT. It's true that Sham's on-air style is more traditional. But like most "guys" of any era, he knows how to cuss and drink with the fellas. He just doesn't showcase it on the air.

Most play-by-play guys don't. Jim Nance. Joe Buck. Al Michaels. Etc. These guys play it straight on the air. It's expected of them. That's the career Sham has chosen.

Let's recall prior to Switzer coming to town, who Dale obviously did not like, Dale was often criticized as being the biggest homer in town (every sportscast leading off with the Cowboys and how great they are). Since the 95-96 season, other than his odd man-crush on Aikman, he's done a 180. They could do no wrong before...now they can do no right.

I was just pointing out Brad and Charlie get paid by the Cowboys this season and this is something more teams have been moving to control content. Just this week, the Baltimore Orioles dumped their longtime home on WBAL for one of CBS' FMs ("Free FM" WHFS) in the market. The WBAL folks claim they offered more money than WHFS, but the O's wanted control over the broadcasts (not liking the current WBAL staff that wasn't afraid to openly criticize the team). More here...

I would assume the local network is going to have a local bias. I don't think that's an issue. I think the issue is the degree and how much of what you are hearing is being fed by the team to promote its image. In the O's case, they gave up more money in order to be cross promoted on CBS' local hot AC "Mix" and "Jack" stations there? Or did they give up more money to have its radio broadcasts on a station where there won't be negative criticism?

And Sham doing NASCAR for Direct TV? Interesting!

Interesting indeed. How is he going to handle the schedule conflict in the last three months of NASCAR and the first three of the NFL. Enquiring minds need to know. ;D

Sham also called a couple of regional NFL games on FOX this past season, one during Dallas' bye week and one when they played on a Monday night.
