Dallas is back in the saddle again-On TNT

I don't know that it's necessarily a stigma to call "Dallas" a soap opera;
it became one after the first few weeks of the original series, and continuing stories
have really become the province of primetime instead of daytime in the last
several years (what with four daytime soaps having been canceled in the last three
years and only four left).

But, as the old radio soap announcers might say, "Will Larry Hagman once again
steal the show? Tune in and find out." I won't be surprised if, even though he's
past 80, he'll once again be the reason people watch "Dallas."

And I, too, am wondering why Victoria Principal isn't on the new show.

I never watched the original series (I was born in 1981) but I remember my parents watching it on Friday nights. I am, however, a fan of the new show and I knew enough about the Ewings and the storyline for it to make sense. To date, this has been the best relaunch of an old show. I found the updated 90210 and Melrose Place to be simply unwatchable.

I'd say "soap opera" is just a subset of drama- but they can easily occupy the same space. "Law & Order" is certainly a drama, but with a lack of continuing storylines, it can't be a soap opera. "ER" would certainly be classified as a drama by the average television viewers, but it was themetically a "soap opera" with continuing storylines that interwined the characters personal and professional lives within the show. I never heard anyone refer to it as a "soap opera", though.

I don't think its anything that can be easily labeled, but any time that a character steps out of a shower after disappearing a year earlier and we learn that another character dreamed an entire season, then you're watching a "soap opera". This kind of suspension of disbelief is never required on a standard drama like "ER".

Victoria Principal left Dallas in 1987, 4 years before the series ended.

The 10th season-ending cliffhanger showed Pam Ewing driving into a tanker truck (after talking with Bobby on her cellphone...talk about distracted driving) which caused a huge explosion. Victoria never returned to Dallas. The storyline left Pam severely disfigured and she left Bobby and Christopher. A Victoria lookalike made one shadowy appearance in the 11th season premiere as Pam Ewing and then the character of Pam was never seen again.

That's why Victoria Principal is not in the new series.

JR Ewing's character (Larry Hagman)was always key to the shows success, i don't think the actor playing "john ross" is very convincing. at least larry hagman's JR could be "Charming" and "Cunning" as well as Evil, the actor playing his son has one side only... "EVIL".. not sure i want to see HIM every week, and he's not a very good actor. despite their age it will BE the Original cast members who are left that will carry the show. i also think the children of bobby and JR depicted are too young, they should have been at least 5 to 10 years older to be convincing, i know what the producers are doing trying to attract a younger audience, but i'm not sure it works. bobby and JR characters were in their mid to late 30's when the show began.

According to Wikipedia, John Ross Ewing III was born on-screen in April 1979, which would make him 33 today. He is being played by a 31 year old Josh Henderson

Oddly enough...Josh Henderson, much like his TV father Larry Hagman (Fort Worth), is a native of the Metroplex, hailing from Big D himself.
