Dan Bongino to fill Limbaugh's radio slot

Note this announcement affects Cumulus owned News/Talk stations. Also Rush Limbaugh was an Iheart production.

Conservative commentator Dan Bongino is taking over the late Rush Limbaugh’s radio slot, Cumulus Media’s Westwood One announced on Wednesday.

“The Dan Bongino Show” will air on the radio Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. starting May 24, the press release states.

"I'm excited to embrace the immense power of radio to connect with my listeners live for three hours every day," Bongino said. "This is an incredible privilege, and I pledge to honor the trailblazing work of those who came before me."

Premier is crazy not to announce a replacement for Rush ... like yesterday.

If the local hosts who stations are beginning to put into his slot do well, and if Bongino connects with Rush's audience, they've lost a huge slice of affiliates.

Premier, what are you waiting for? Get on with it!

Early weekday afternoons for talk radio has become just like early Saturday evening for public radio. It's just another chunk of time to fill, not some icon-hosted destination like Limbaugh or Keillor.

Well they can just throw in somebody who used to be a Fox News pundit I guess. The noon to 3 timeslot isn't the beginning, middle and end of Premiere's business. Why do all 600 stations have to continue carrying the same thing?

Good point, and I think what we're going to see is 600 stations doing a lot of different things now that a heritage host has passed away. It's a natural thing. We've already seen a few groups announce their plans. I'm sure Entercom will be next. They also have some major talkers around the country with WPHT Philadelphia, KDKA Pittsburgh, and KMOX St. Louis.

People are acting like NBC has an hour of prime time to fill on Thursday nights. The stations that carried Rush will have to sign new contracts with whatever Premiere offers, and they may not. I even think some iHeart stations might go local or regional. Thay have plenty of people in the stable. So a WLW host goes on the air in Columbus and Cleveland. Not that far fetched.

Very possible. That's what happened about 8 years ago when some major markets banished Rush, Hannity, and other syndicated hosts to their own private island, and replaced them with all local talkers. That happened at KFI in Los Angeles. The result was a much stronger and more profitable station. From what I've observed, iHeart stations have more power at the company than Premiere. If the stations want to replace Rush with local or regional hosts, they won't get any blowback from corporate. So WTAM in Cleveland is doing a 1-hour local show with Geraldo Rivera. Perhaps they expand that in their noon to 3 slot, and also offer that to Columbus. Who knows? But you're right that we might be surprised at what the iHeart stations do.

USA Today says Bongino starts May 24.

In Boston iHeart runs Rush on WXKS 1200 while
sister station WRKO 680 has the Grace Curley
show via Howie Carr network. The Curley show is replacing Rush in at at least 2 markets, Portland ME and Keene NH on Saga stations.
The Saga station in Manchester NH will run Curley while iHeart's WGIR keeps whar was the
Rush show.

The big one would have to be is whoever Iheart gets for their stations such as KFBK-AM/FM given that it was the flagship of the Iheart O&O's airing Rush Limbaugh.

It would be more accurate to say WOR was the flagship, replacing WABC where production was handled from the start of the national show.

Although he no longer based the show at WABC after he moved out of New York in 2009. One could say the "flagship," if there was one, was KEIB in LA.

I thought the commercials were still inserted in New York, and there was a producer in New York, even with Rush in West Palm.

I think someone at Cumulus' PR department forgot they sold WABC...

The news and opinion show will launch May 24 in markets nationwide, including CUMULUS news stations in top-ten markets New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.
