Dan Bongino to fill Limbaugh's radio slot

Is there anything stopping iHeart stations from carrying Bongino?

In NYC for example WOR would likely benefit from a live show instead of Rush reruns. What happens if WABC picks up Bongino?

If WOR takes Bongino, WABC would be smart to move Greg Kelly to noon instead of 1 pm (if possible.) Kelly and Bongino both do good shows. It would be interesting to see who would win that ratings war.

Only what is perceived as a strong preference from iHeart executives to air whatever Premiere Networks provides.

The "New York" station is Cumulus-owned rimshot WFAS-A, licensed to White Plains.
A full-time affiliate of CBS Sports Radio? It's website doesn't show anything about Bongino's show being added. Hell, it's showing news stories from 4 years ago.

Definitely seems like a flub on their PR dept's part.

Are you sure about that? iHeart's LA office is in Burbank. Premiere is in Sherman Oaks. But Premiere also has a NYC office on Avenue of the Americas.
Now I see it. Ihearts LA office is off CA-134 freeway and Premiere is in a different part of the San Fernando Valley.

Burbank and Van Nuys; two separate LA suburban cities.

With iHeart reducing studio sizes, it would not surprise me to see them move or cut the footprint down at the current location. While the LA stations are mostly live still, they overbuilt the facilities in a very different era. I suspect, like many stations, sales will be a smaller department and many functions will be done from the staff member's home.

Does any iHeart station anywhere take Westwood shows?

I think a lot of people in this thread are underestimating the popularity of Rush, regardless of live or recorded. Plus remember the primary motivation for iHeart buying WOR in the first place was for Rush after Lew Dickey dropped him from WABC.

I also think if WOR is going to drop out of the current Rush show, it will be for a LOCALLY hosted show, especially given the upcoming mayoral race. The primaries will be in June.

WOR’s decision will be based on two things: 1) How much they can spend developing a show that will retain the saleable audience. 2) Both WOR and IHeart executives taste for Convserative Political Talk vs News Of The Day talk. They are two different things. Rush’s program was about what Rush’s thoughts on the given subjects. That’s a different animal from someone strictly discussing current events, especially in a local context.

While Rush is immensely popular, I don’t think they continue the reruns in middays nationwide for much longer. This was done to pay tribute to him, to his loyal audience and probably to satisfy for advertising contracts which will eVentually expire (It’s still Rush and people are still listening.)

Personally, I see Rush reruns going the way of “Art Bell: Somewhere in Time” being played on weekend off-hours with some sort of emcee introducing segments. And why not?

Plus online. They've already announced a podcast. I suspect the website will become a repository for his words for a long time.

Podcasts are exactly where Rush archives belong, not on the airwaves where immediacy is expected.

I'm not sure if WOR would benefit from a local host covering the mayoral battle between Cats and Curtis but, who knows, it might be fun!

If big breaking news happens, there is a live body right there who can interrupt the Rush audio and switch to live talk.

But truthfully, right now there's not much to talk about. Might as well listen to Rush since everything else is the same.

Weekend overnights are a wasteland for talk radio. The Art Bell reruns then super serve a specifically small but regular audience.

Rush reruns would do well to emulate this approach.

Podcasts would be nice, but keeping them digital-only would mean eliminating whatever revenue stream there could be in those otherwise useless broadcast hours.

Rush 24/7 on the iHeart app seems like it would be a plan.

Clearance is clearance. If they have to shoehorn him into the station's otherwise clearance for clearance's sake 24/7 CBS Sports Radio schedule, so be it.

The title of this post is misleading. For now, Bongino is only replacing Rush on Cumulus-owned stations. Cumulus has several talk stations in large markets that had been running Rush: WLS Chicago, KSFO Los Angeles, WBAP Dallas, WMAL Washington and WJR Detroit, along with stations in medium and small markets. Plus we know KABC Los Angeles, which was not carrying Rush, will carry this show.

However, Rush was on mostly iHeart stations. WOR NYC, KEIB LA, KTRH Houston, WXKS Boston, WIOD Miami and the list goes on. iHeart clearly has the most talk radio stations in the nation. Just as Cumulus will have its own Noon-3pm host for its stations, when the Rush repeats end, iHeart will likely name someone who will be on all the iHeart stations. I'm sure iHeart will want to give this new host the same clearances on company-owned stations that Rush enjoyed.

And what about the other big owners of talk stations? We know for two of its stations, Cox-Apollo will put local hosts in the Noon-3pm slot. But Cox has other talkers which haven't revealed their plans. What about Entercom? WPHT Philadelphia, KDKA Pittsburgh, KMOX St. Louis, KXNT Las Vegas, WTIC Hartford, etc. Who will those stations go with?

BTW, David Eduardo asked, do any iHeart stations pick up a Westwood One show? Yes, Mark Levin is on a number of iHeart stations at night, KGB San Diego, WTVN Columbus, WHAM Rochester, WKRC Cincinnati and others. Surprisingly, the Premiere Network host in the 6 to 9pm slot, Buck Sexton, doesn't get cleared on most iHeart talk stations. Some opt for Levin. Others might run Dave Ramsey or another syndicated offering.

My bet is they'll go local in most of those markets. They definitely WON'T stay with the repeats beyond May. This gives them time to prepare their next step.

IHeart has a big stable of on-air hosts, they can do some experimenting. Better option than attempting to "crown" the next Limbaugh
