Anybody notice the 1230am to 680am flip of the Dan Patrick Show and Bill O'Riley's Radio Factor?

Starts tomorrow!

I like DP much more on the radio than on sportscenter.

That is all.

David DICK-ey

Wow!!!! You mean he put a SPORTS SHOW on a SPORTSTALK radio station???!!?

This is another example of the brilliant and innovative programming genius of 680 The Fan's David DICK-ey. It only took him five years to figure this one out.

Here's to another .7 share, Mr. DICK-ey

Disappointed

I'm actually disappointed about the change. I like Dan, but I guess sports talk is sort of boring to me outside of the football season. I can totally understand why 680 would revert back to this since that's their bag. I just hope I can pick up the other AM station O'Reilly moves to. He was up against boring Rush and a couple of financial shows (that I sometimes do listen to). The thing about O'Reilly is that his radio show wasn't as far right as Rush or Hannity. On radio he seems more down the middle than some of his TV rants.

Anyway, most will welcome the change. I don't like it.

Re: Dan Patrick and O'Reilly flip - a little irony

I just thought of something that makes this move have a little bit of irony.

During the 2 PM hour of the Dan Patrick Show, Dan is joined by his former Sportscenter sidekick Keith Olbermann. Keith's main job is as host of "Countdown" on MSNBC. "Countdown" airs at 8 PM, the same time as O'Reilly's show on Fox News Channel.

Olbermann and O'Reilly are in a big feud right now (see National TV board for more), so when Olbermann announced that Dan Patrick displaced O'Reilly here in Atlanta on last night's "Countdown", he laughed with glee.

By the way, Keith made no mention of the station's WCNN call sign. Olbermann was a sportscaster with CNN in the early 80's. Another piece of irony.

Guess there's no use in re-hashing Patrick's own history with Atlanta TV and CNN...I'm surprised this move wasn't made any sooner.
______________

Re: Disappointed

I agree with you, I'm also disappointed. I'm not really a sports fan so O'Reilly was the only reason I ever tuned to 680 or had a preset on my radio for them. But it's a move that does make sense. I never understood why a "sports" station would run O'Reilly. Similarly, I don't understand why a supposed "news-talk" station or a "classic rock" station would (BLEEP) themselves out to the Braves the way they do...or another classic rocker to the Falcons. There are two sports stations in town and, except for the Thrashers, what local teams do they carry? Seems like all the local teams are on stations that supposedly run non-sports formats. The only thing 640 has that can draw any audience is Rush, but in summer they pre-empt Rush for Braves. Just doesn't seem too smart to me the way any of these stations handle sports programming.

Re: Disappointed

I agree with the swap to Dan Patrick, finally. I think having O'reilly was a station image thing. They just now realized that it made no sense, I don't get it. I guess that's what happens when you don't have a P.D.
As for the teams that the stations carry...
680 has the Trashers and all the Westwood One affiliaton, so they have the majority of the nfl and ncaa football and hoops(in march). As far as I know I think that they also carry alot of NBA. Also 680 is the official station of Auburn football. Sister station WFOM is the official station of Notre Dame in Atlanta. WALR also gets all the play by play that 680 can't fit onto their station. The other sister WALR, now ESPN Deportes has all of the major latino centered sports such as World Cup soccer, and also the World Baseball classic.
790 has the Hawks, Georgia Force, Georgia Tech, and has affiliation with the Falcons too.
As much as I agree with the other big sports being on a sports station, there's only so much they can afford. GST has the braves because Clear Channel can pay for it. Same with the Falcons with Dave FM, owned by CBS.

While I agree that having the Braves on FM goes against the norm (most baseball remains on AM only), but there is precedent all over the country of football having an FM flagship. Now, whether or not you think the laid-back Dave is the right fit for fottball, that's a whole other story...

And as for O'Reilly. He was most likely on 680 in the first place to secure the rights to him in the market, effectively blocking anyone else for getting him, much like 1k 1400 WFTL in Ft. Lauderdale did a few years back before the owners had a 50k blowtorch to throw him on a few years later. Either that, or the network gave Dickey a sweet deal to clear O'Reilly in the ATL.

Dan Patrick is just as boring as Colin cow-terd in the morning, nobody ever learns that in Atlanta syndicated shows tank 9 out of 10 times.
______________
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

Well, the Braves are a pretty big deal so I can understand it from a business point of view. Yet, I agree with you! I'm kind of bummed that I will now have to hear daily talk about the Braves on 640 and 96 Rock. With SO many games it just gets old hearing Cox or some other coach being interviewed about each game. At least with football it's only one game a week. I'd rather hear the Regular Guys talk about some insignificant matter ;)
