Dance Friendly Virgin Radio Launches in Vancouver,BC

..just listened to the launch of the brand new 95.3 Virgin @ 4:00pm today Radio (www.virginradio.ca). They now are featuring a Saturday night Dance Party.. and just heard them play Chicane-Don't Give Up as well as a lot of other Dance friendly tracks.

This was the old Z95 from the early 90's that was a very dance leaning station.. Funny how things come full circle sometimes....

They have an online stream as well.

Comments?

The stream started working again last night and I listened for a bit. Very impressive. I want to listen more before providing further commentary.

I will say that that I LOVE the professional look of the Virgin Radio Web sites, and the professional sound of their stations.

HMM I had a really strong feeling that Vancouver would get a new Virgin format on the under performing,, and quite Boring CRAVE 95.3.... I do wish that it was more like a Z-1035 type station,,, the old Z-95.3 was almost Pure dance in the early to mid 90s,,, then a mainstream CHR, and then a Hot AC,, and then back to CHR again... I bet montreal gets a new Virgin too maybe mix 96?????

Yes, I agree that 95Crave was incredibly boring. I can't believe that it was supposed to be the Canadian version of the MOViN' stations...the actual MOViN' stations sound better!

How well-known is the "Virgin" brand in the US? If it's not well-known, and if stations start picking up this format, I could see stupid "virgin" type jokes being thrown around...i.e. "Virgin Radio? That's what all the virgins listen to".

Im thinking the same thing,,, Kids saying its the station for Virgins,,, but I used to associate it more with Virgin Records,,, but i dont think any of the above has a connection... Since the format is geared toward mainly 21 plus females and isnt really a youth station, i dont think Adults would have problems listening to it,,, they may crack jokes but still listen.. I think its really weird how the original Virgin Radio in London which was Rock-Hot AC leaned disappeared, and then reappeared in Canada as an opposite Rhythmic Hot AC lean..... Funny how things like this happen at times,,, it doesnt ever seem possible,,, maybe a pipe dream to some,, and then all the sudden it really happens..

I still think the only way to save Dance in the U.S is more Z1035 type stations,,, Catered to US markets of course,,, or like the old 100.7 MIX FM here in Indiana which had its highest ratings when they were doing their Dance lean.... I think the DIVA stations in Louisiana could have worked much better with a different name, and less 80s non rhythmic material... I always liked the Baton Rouge... AKA Capital City Diva better.... A KKFR mid nineties sound, or Power 96 Miami, or B-96 Chicago could work too... Pure Dance stations loaded with POP Remixes and Diva Dance dont work and wont work here.. Thats why stations like Slam FM in Holland,,, and Galaxy and Kiss in the UK, and even the NOVA stations in Australia all do well,,, and even though I am a Huge Huge Dance Fan,, I like to hear the Top Hit Music mixed in as well,,, thats what the Dance-CHRs in the 80s and 90s did,, it wasnt a constant BOOM BOOM BOOM,,,, which is great on weekend mixshows, and drive at 5 shows, but people still have to tune to the local CHR to hear their favorite Top hits.... That doesnt happen on stations like Z-103.5 that really do play all the hits.... Dance Fans need to except hip hop and Rock and VICE Versa in order for dance to survice here,, thats why most Dance stations in Europe are also the Default CHR for the town... hardly ever will you find a european CHR POP station that plays No Dance at all..... The stations like Virgin and some Movin or Rhythmic AC stations,,, my fave being KTFM are a grat outlet for most of us older guys who remember these older songs,,but we need youthful Rhythmic and CHRs to add more Dance... Do like I do and put in 3 to 5 at a time, and spike a few recurrents and it can work,, If you accidentally picj up a turd, your audience will tell you and you can remove it,,, while other times a huge hit like Septembers Cry For you just blows up,,, its no secret that me and my small market CHR played a big part in making this song a CHR hit.. Its been in rotation for 15 months,, thats the longest ever for us in like 20 some odd years.... and it may take a few years, but if dance doesnt go too underground, we could get more Z-1035 type stations in the U.S......

I havent listened yet,,, but the Virgin in Toronto is good, but much more current friendly than a Rhythmic AC here.

I would have liked to see the old Z-95.3 return with new imaging and a current CHR sound thats Dance friendly like Z-1035 Toronto.....
