Dance Music in Central Pa.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so I'll voice mine as well! Many years ago I lived in the Tampa Bay area when The Power Pig was dominating the market. They weren't always number one, but they held their own. They used local club DJ's to mix the sets for them in the production studio and played them back over the air.

I used to work at Y108 and the Rebel in Pittsburgh back in the early 90's, and our GM at the time had just come from managing The Power Pig. He and the others got blown out when they switched formats. They made money while it lasted, but that's a more ethnically diverse market than the central PA region. I don't see a "dance station" working unless there's a heavy amount of disco or 80's funk in the music library.

Kenhawk this could be the first hour of a dance station. I say we can even add some rock and roll since it is central PA

1. Black Eyed Peas-Let's Get It Started
2. Dazz Band-Let It Whip
3. Donna Summer-On The Radio
4. Toto-Hold The Line
5. Lisa Lisa& Cult Jam-Head To Toe
6. Janet Jackson-Escapade
7. Panic! At The Disco-I Write Sins Not Tragedies
8. Bee Gees-More Than A Woman
9. The Fixx-One Thing Leads To Another
10. Diana Ross-Upside Down
11. INXS-New Sensation
12. Sean Paul-When Are You Gonna (Give It Up To Me)
13. Tavares-Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel

I like it...you get dance mixes of the rock tunes and follow a BPM curve to a commercial stopset, it could work. Nice mix.

An excellent Pop-Rock Classic.

101 The Rose plays this song alot along with now Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust". I like the classic rock mix that they are now playing.

Thanks Aging Xer.

I knew 2 of the jocks personally that were part of the project. Had the station not flipped to 93.3 FLZ and mixing up the format a bit more, I probably would have jumped on the opportunity to mix for them myself, even if the pay was low and there was absolutely no glory in it (they never gave credit to the mixologists on the air). It still would have been fun.

As far as listening to dance, I could handle that format on my drive to work, so could my fiance. We're both pushing 40, but still love to dance. We may be old to some of you, but we ain't dead yet! Rap?? falls into the oxymoron category- Microsoft Works, Military Intelligence and Rap Music!

We still use local club DJ's to mix sets for us, both live, and pre-recorded. We have a half hour show called the 9 O'Clock HitMix, and we do an Friday afternoon weekend warmup show with a local club DJ.

And, people are forgetting WIMX-FM in Harrisburg, which was WAY ahead of its time. Back in 94 and 95, 99.3 had a Mix show on Friday and Saturday nights which dominated the market. It rivaled, if it was not superior to, Hot 105.7's format.

lol..you don't know what dance music is.

I'm still surprised neither Kiss-FM or Hot 92 have any dance mixshows. This is actually a fairly dance-friendly market, and downtown Harrisburg has three venues that play the music...there's a pretty loyal following around here.

Okay....before I give my thoughts (someone directed me here), I need to know....regarding Central PA, are we talking Harrisburg/York?? I do have my opinions and I want to state them. Though I gotta be careful here...your "brotherly love" compatriots were going to "hang" me when I proposed this same idea on that board! :D

i think the best option is a chr that leans dance... well known music with a few dance tracks, and then at night a few dance heavy mixshows...

to the power pig poster, any airchecks or mixshows available for listening??

Well, add Central PA to the long list of boards violated by the kiddie dance spammers.

Again, as has been pointed out on numerous occasions, if there were a huge demand, it would have been done already.

As recently as 2002, Harrisburg had a dance-friendly CHR (Hot 92 - WWKL). They were mostly hip-hop, but at its peak they played about 20-30% dance music (Amber, Darude and others). They played a lot of the big dance hits at the time, but even got a bit underground by playing some Paul Oakenfold and I remember Who Da Funk - Shiny Disco Balls even got played. They gradually phased out dance and haven't played anything other then Cascada since.

At the time Harrisburg had a pretty strong electronic club music scene, but since then all the big clubs downtown play hip-hop. There has been a bit of a resurgence with house and trance getting played in a handful of venues, but there isn't a big enough following to get our own dance station. I would like to see WHKF (993 Kiss FM - which was never dance friendly, even while Hot 92 was) or even Hot 92 bring back dance music at least in a mixshow.
