DANCE MUSIC....OKAY PHILLY, YOU ARE NEXT!

Doowop.....

If we are going to do a semantic war here, it is "description"...not discription. But I digress. ;)

Dance music is part of the RHYTHMIC genre, which I did state on his show. And not every dance track out there has the same beat. On top of that, not every dance track is instrumental; there are tracks with lyrical content in there. Whether you like what is heard or not, hey..that's you or anyone in here; I am certainly not out to challenge or change anyone's tastes in here.

And hello, we ARE in the 21st century. Where is it law that for music to be deemed legitimate that an instrument HAS to be played? Hip-hop has thrived over the years from DJ's scratching records in the background along with samples and loops thrown in. In Britain, dance music IS pop and played in the clubs. How does that music mainstream overseas and in this country it is held back?

And if you look back at earlier posts on this thread, what one generation considers "dance" to be, others may not. And even though one word got "censored", I did state that doo w op (separated to avoid censoring...not a spelling error) could be considered the dance music of someone in their 60s.

George did make some valid points and I did too! That's whats great about this country...we can agree to disagree but have a healthy discussion in the process. Things have to change within as well but on the dance music side we are working on it.

Tony, my man, FIRST, to say that it is "held back" is implying that there is some conspiracy taking place among corporate radio stations, some coordinated effort, to stop "dance music" BELIEVE ME TONY,corporate radio already panders to teens to the late 20's to early 30's. when I hear "dance music" it is also know as "club music" a constant stream of electronically manufactured nonsence.a little different than hip hop or rap. it has no heart. it's just music to hear at a club while you are loaded trying to score.if corporate radio saw a huge market for this, more stations would be changing their formats. so, for it not to be means their isn't one.second, the word" Doo w op" is not offensive.it is not ment as an insult to an Italian person. it can be spelled with one p or two.it comes from back ground vocalists harmonizing "shoo Doo w op shoo bop" they would sing about love, dating, romance, breaking up etc. not "Booties" "Butts" "B-----s" "Wh---s" popping a cap in yo ass etc etc.

OK, I've read enough.

1. Tony, you don't live here, don't ram you're desire down our collective Delaware Valley throats. Play your 8-track, cassette, walkman, 12" vinyl, Ipod as loud as you want. I want real oldies, but I can't get it either.

2. Disco still sucks, 3 decades later. It sucked then, it sucks now, it will always suck. It is empty crap.

3. Get a life, and direct your energies towards helping people in need instead of dancing. Is there nothing more important than fighting for a dance format? How shallow and empty. Raise some money for Cancer Research, Aids, join the Kiwanis or Jaycees.

4. Philly already has enough "air pollution" without this noise on our airwaves. Put it on where YOU live. It is arrogant to push your preferances on others who DON'T want it.

It is also arrogant to bash someone that is passionate about something. All you are doing is giving your opinion and so is Tony. There are people that like dance music, just like there are people that like rock, R&B, polka and every other genre know to man. To say that people dont want it, is unrealistic. Have you polled everyone in the Delaware Valley and asked them? Do you give back your community. What a person does is there choice. Whats up with the hate? The people on here that are hating are the ones that are shallow. ITs one thing to have opinion on dance music wont work but its another to slam a guy for it.

Doowopvault dance music has a soul. Have you ever listened to what it is or are you just listening to Techno? Even techno has a soul. Someone created it and poured their heart in soul into. music is music no matter what it is. People said Rap wasnt music but it is to some people. Dance music has changed since the mid to late 90's. Its more about the vocals, well at least the commercial element.

This hatred business has got to stop.

Oh btw in case you didnt know Doug Flemming who found this site was a huge dance music fan and wrote the radio column for Dance Music Authority magazine. Kind of funny that you guys post on a message board started by someone passionate about something you hate

amfmsw,

It is guys like you that further feed me into pushing my cause even harder. I was actually going to back off a notch with Philly and concentrate on other markets. But now, you've pushed and I'm gonna shove back. When one searches for trouble, they usually FIND it. Hello.

As I have said, someone in Philly should be the one to spearhead this since yes, I DON'T live there. I will back that person FULLY. I am sorry you don't have true oldies where you are. I think that is unfortunate that a market like Philly doesn't have an oldies radio station to reflect the fans of the music (I know about WOGL). But you have just proved to everyone on this board the ignorance and arrogance regarding people's likes and dislikes (people who live in glass houses, you know). And if you are going to personally attack me....then I have every right to strike back. You don't want dance music? FINE. There are others THAT DO. That's who I'm supporting and tearing down all the "walls" (aka YOU! and those like you).

If Boston wanted to get "rid" of a guy like me, they did it the "right" way.

Brett, call me.

Very strong reply there Dancerev, huge thumbs up.

BTW, for those that don't know DanceRev also listens to Rock, Pop, and even Country if I'm not mistaken. What do you guys listen to? Sounds to me like the niched ones here are those that are only listening to Oldies or a certain flavor of hard Rock. And hey, wasn't Rock at one time known as the devil's music? That it was a sin to listen to? That rather then not having a soul, it was evil? And if you say Dance music is about living in a club 24/7 isn't it like saying Oldies is like living in the past 24/7? Or soft Rock means you're sedated 24/7?
You can definitely hear Dance music both at 9 AM and at 9 PM. There's hundreds of Dance stations operating around the world, mainly in Europe, and I have the proof right here:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=140320600&blogID=207461668

Furthermore, the beauty of Dance music is that it's not restricted to the same beats per minute as most genres, or the same verse-chorus structure as most genres. It can be both formulaic and freeform, meaning that it is artistic. Those that say it has no soul are looking at it one dimensionally.

Dance music comes from many different places and has many different sounds. It can actually unite people from around the world when it's instrumental as it's not confined to those fluent in English, Spanish, Chinese, etc., and it can unite people via words or emotional melodies.
Here's some examples of current Dance music.

From Australia there's The Potbellez with "Don't Hold Back"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WxAXmHa0--I

From Germany there's Pauk Van Dyk, one of the world's leading DJs and Dance producers. Even though he's mainly known as a Trance DJ he does produce some good vocal records like this one titled "Let Go"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=S_6qdMcYezQ

Dance music can evoke images of a warm place to get away to like Alex Kunnari out of Finland with "Lifter"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mtnt2ODsw_g

It can be futuristic and over the top cool with records like "Body Crash" by Buy Now, which is a record made by a couple of House producers out of Sweden:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=r2ybVfjDILk

Or it can be Retro friendly sound-wise as is the case with America's own Armand Van Helden on his simple but infectious "Je Taime" record
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GqhcIT5JcEU

It can be very Poppish and accessible, especially to females with records like Kate Ryan out of Belgium with "L.I.L.Y."
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ag2pmXhR5PE

It can be very groovy, soulful, and yet anthemic at the same time with records like "Give Love" by Tristan Garner out of France:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=F__OADY55k0

Or again it can be very melodic and emotional with records like "Sunflower" by Vincent De Moor out of Holland
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jJTD7gqmz6M

It can be intelligent and have some alternative/college radio appeal as is the case with Hop Chip's "Ready For The Floor"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=AW94AEmzFhQ

Dance music can be hard and youthful as is the case with The Beholder's "Euphoria"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xZ9rwkQj4xE

It can also have some Hip Hop influences as is the case with Groove Armada's "The Girls Say"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=I1hbptM8_FA

Or there could be some Latin/Mediterrenean/World music influences as is the case with this instrumental number from Ian Oliver called "Bucovina"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=29zGEh56-KY

And again it can be very poppish, very accessible with a good singer and a good chorus like Kylie Minogue's "In My Arms"

Gentleladies/men Tony, CHR, 889,

The purpose of my post did not serve to offend, but to vent as well. But it proved a point. Respectfully, your naievte' about the broadcast business is alarming. Doowop's reply previous mentions it. The market decides the trends and profitablity, not even your obvious true passion for the result will ever change that. You sound paranoid, like there's this big conspiracy against Dance music. There is, it's the same conspiracy that keeps Spanish (Mexican Regional/Carribean) off FM in this city. There's your passion, and there's reality. The format would not generate enough ratings and cash to make it profitable.

Market conditions make the same true for Radio Martini (WHAT) style and true oldies on FM in Philly. I believe the wall you've hit here with some here boys, is your attitude of "look out Philly, you're next...I'm gonna teach you backwoods ignoramuses how uncool you've been. Re-read your #1 post that began the thread. You know a tiny bit of Philly Radio history...so what. What do you REALLY know about this magnificent blue collar city? OUR traditions, OUR localisms, OUR heritage? You need to be more sensitive to the people you're trying to persuade. Beginning by "hey stupids, I'm cool and I'm gonna teach you what's really cool, because you're city is lame" is not going to win the intellectual or emotional arguemant.

There's a reason Q102 dropped the format some years ago. And just because a Ch 6 TV audio feed on 87.75 in NYC is on, doesn't mean Philly will support it. I don't think 87.75 even has a ghost of a chance in NYC either, as 50% of the radios cannot even tune in the frequency! I don't consider it a radio station, it's a license abuse that will go away next February 9 when the analog TV transmitters are shut down.

Now, gentlemen, instead of making everyone feel like rubes, win the arguement. But I stand by my #2. It was a 2 1/2 year fad. And yes, I do know the "Dance" you refer to is not disco.

D Stroyer,

I understand you've adopted "HD" Radio as a pet agenda, but even the "dance nuts" I'm respectfully disagreeing with here know the "side projects of obligation" you named above aren't even remotely germane to the discussion. I played to more "dance radio" fans in one bar/club tonight that "Club Ben" did to the entire Delaware Valley via its "HD" science project. I'll bet money on that. I'll also bet money that low-power high school station WMPH in New Castle County, Delaware has more listeners than that "Wired 96 Phase Two" or whatever it is. Bank.

21st Century my foot. How about, "Welcome to reality"?

Have any ARB books to show me how well-received "Club Ben" or "Hot Wired" are?

Get back to me.

Rather than calling for a current station to completely flip formats, all the dance-music-must-be-on-the-radio people need to do is go get the HD receivers, tell their friends to get them, tell their friends' friends to get them, etc. Start spreading the word, start listening, phone/e-mail/snail-mail GM and Beasley very loudly, and let them know, "Hey, we're listening!! Here's what we like and don't like."

I know, it irritates people when I start talking "happy talk" about something related to radio. Sitting here, on the outside... I can't help myself ::) I just get irritated by the attitude (in many things, including radio) that borrows from a Cranberries album title: "Nobody else is doing it, so why should we?"

Tony, let me put this issue into perspective. It does not matter what you want, or the people, for that matter, It only matters what the corporations that operate the stations want that really count.I changed my mind. I'll let it go. good luck.

And yet you still do a little jabbing. Nothing wrong with venting....but do you have to go about it by saying "go away?", "Disco sucks"? To me that just fuels it and wants me to work harder alongside the fans of dance music IN the region to get something done and on your end, it proved ignorance and intolerance towards dance music fans. In that sense, the movement officially begins.

I'll give credit to the Radio Racket Message Board, at least the arguments in there are constructive and in ways are actually HELPFUL in terms of attaining the goal at hand...that Philadelphia (should the fans in the region dictate it) get a rhythmic station AND to support the ones that do exist below 92 (Z88.9 and WMPH). Having fights and arguing won't get anywhere because for me, I won't back down on a fight. I don't cower.

There is no paranoia from our end. If anything the "Disco Sucks" movement dealt with rock fans paranoia in the sense of being "homophobes" and in part "racism" (that thought came from another poster on a New York board). Now, am I saying YOU and others here are like that? NO. (I've bolded this so that words don't get twisted here). Yet the bitterness that still stems from that train of thought does still exist and that's the reality that we have faced and still face even though you do have a lot of dance fans that are straight and a multitude of cultures. We'll NEVER change you to like our music...that's not the point. We're just saying, open up a bit to people that post this because there is NO bad genre of music to any fan that appreciates it. You expect us to respect your viewpoints...the least you can do is respect ours.

The title of the thread was created due to the excitement in New York regarding Pulse 87. And based on the past history in Philly, I've just figured that Philadelphia should be the next market to get a dance station like we have here, because of past history and remembering a fan in your region, years ago, that wanted to do something about it. It WAS NEVER INTENDED to say, "hey, we're better than you, now get with the program!" We'll reserve that sort of trashtalking to a Phillies/Mets (or Yankees) game.

As such, we will take the necessary steps to do something. And if nothing happens, at the very least we get the dance fans of the Philadelphia/So. Jersey region talking. And I'll say it again....SOMEONE IN PHILADELPHIA should spearhead the campaign. I'll just lend them what we did up here in New York City.

This won't be an argument that we can win tomorrow. But we will win it down the road. Trust me on that.

(And before I was going to post this, I've read doowopvault's recent response. And yes doo..you are right, it is the corporations. That's who we're really aiming for. And thank you.)

Tony might not know the history but I do and I also no why things happened at Q. Hell I work with several of them, including the former PD. Its a fad? if you look at the history of dance music since the 80's it was pop music. People tend to forget that. We didnt call it dance music at that point. New Order, Michael & Janet Janet Jackson, Samantha Fox, Milli Vanilli(not proud of that one), Duran Duran, Maddonna(who got her start in the clubs), Erasure, and so on. The 90's you had the freestyle movement which is still huge in Philly like Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond, Rockell, and then artists like Amber, max-a-million(which became Shaggy), Marky Mark, Everything but the girl and even the hip hop was considered dance music. Q was still playing dance music into the late 90's early 2000 but hip hop was king of the mountain.

Again Ill say this one more time will a pure dance station work, hell no! Ill repeat that hell no and if you missed it again HELL NO!, but Top 40 stations playing more dance singles will work, which they are starting too. Q did bring back mixshows which they havent had in years and PST which you could say is out the of the market is doing the same.

There is no conspiracy against the genre, where you get that idea is unreal. Oh and the market decides the trends then why do most of the music selections at one of the companies come from the Mid West? Philly radio lost its sound. This market used to have a flavor of its own. Now it sounds like market 55, 32, 18, 27 and I could go on. The talent may be better but the song selection is all the same.

AGREED! 100% On this, sir, we're on the same page.

Every market lost its "sound" when consolidation and multiple station ownership became standard in the early to mid-90's.

Another thing to touch on, by invoking the "rock music is the devil's music" argument in an (IMO) inappropriate manner, gives off this air that dance music is "holier than thou". ARE YOU NUTS???????? Sure, you can push your agenda, but also expect us non-dance fans to push back, especially after having to hear this rhetoric since the dawning of time (of the radio boards).

IF DONE RIGHT IT WOULD WORK. TOP 5 RATED PROB NOT..TOP 10 ABSOLUTLEY.EVERY SINGLE TIME Q102 IS WILLING TO ADD A DANCE TRACK IT BECOMES HUGE HERE...PEOPLE IN THE TRI STATE AREA LIKE DANCE MUSIC...THEY JUST ARENT FAMILIAR WITH IT BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN LOST IN THIS MARKET FOR SO LONG..NOT TO MENTION THE CLUB SCENE.WE HAVE 3 ROCK STATIONS,2 HIP HOP STATIONS,2 RYTH CHRS..HEAVILY LEANING URBAN, OLDIES,AC,106.1(I DONT KNOW WHAT ID CONSIDER THIS), AND TWO TOP 40S THAT BLEED INTO OUR MARKET WSTW ,WPST...IT WOULD WORK.IT WOULD TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO CATCH ON AND REALLY RECONISABLE SONGS FROM THE PAST(FREESTYLE AND HITS LIKE LASGO,CASCADA,ATC,ALICE DEEJAY)WOULD HAVE TO BE PRESENT ALONG WITH DANCE REMIXES OF CURRENT ARTISTS(JORDAN SPARKS , J TIMBERLAKE ECT).IT WOULD TAKE A YEAR FOR IT TO REALLY CATCH ON HERE...LITTLE BY LITTLE YOU COULD ADD CURRENTS AS PEOPLE STARTED TO UNDERSTAND AND GET ACCOSTOMED TO THE FORMAT......FOR ALL THE DANCE HATERS "WHY ALL THE HATE?" Third key up on the far left side of your keyboard. Please disengage it.

Amazing that i try to make a point and instead of argueing it or agreeing with it you instead worry about how i type......

If you'd like, I could pick apart your spelling as well.

As for your point, I think you're wrong. There is no chance that a Dance/Rhythmic formatted station would be in the Top 10. If if it would work, someone would be doing it. One of our callers made the point on the show Friday night and I'll restate it here. How are you going to sell the format at 11am on a weekday? It's not a format that can be on in a business, except maybe at a "head shop" or tatoo parlor on South St.

You can say it will work all you want, but just because you say it doesn't make it true.

I may disagree with Tony Santiago, but at least he knows how to make a cogent argument.

Just like you can make Active Rock or Hip Hop work at 11 AM, you can also make Dance/Rhythmic work at 11 AM. It's pretty simple really.
I heard your show on Friday about how supposedly you cant play it at a bank at 11 AM. Truth of the matter is when I walk up to the tellers at my bank I don't hear any music. It might not fit at a Dr.'s office when you're getting a root canal, but neither will Hip Hop or Active Rock.
On the other hand, You could EASILY play Dance at your little office cubicle, or at a fashion/department store, at a place where you get your car fixed, at a beauty salon, etc. In fact, a lot of places of business would be interested to play something upbeat/uptempo at 11 AM that isn't "too hard or too soft" and yet is hip and contemporary.

Kyle the 12 noon work out on Q was the number 1 rated show for the longest time. A lot of our listeners are listening to the station at work. People listen to it at the gyms while they are working out. That 11-1 is huge because people are in the middle of their day and need to recharge. Heck we have people at the county government building calling in. If you go into the trend stores in the mall, they are all playing up tempo music.
