Dance songs that should have been huge hits

What songs do you think should have had more massive airplay? The first one that comes to mind is Dirty Talk by Wynter Gordon. The lyrics probably kept it from being embrace by the mainstream.

Ah, yes...for mainstream airplay, there are just too many to count, but here's a few:

Alex Gaudino - "I'm In Love" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTRle2qmAuM

Kelly Rowland ft. David Guetta - "Commander" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwfKZ-1jyiw

Nadia Ali, Starkillers, & Alex Kenji - "Pressure (Alesso)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y31umxjp1mQ

Tiesto & Sneaky Sound System - "I Will Be Here (Wolfgang Gartner)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXzSg6FhAP4

Example - "Watch The Sun Come Up (Fred Falke) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxBro9HDY8

Ercola feat. Daniella - "Every Word" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOr5Lw_MOM

Get Far feat. H-Boogie - "The Radio (DJ Ross & Alessandro Viale Remix)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n30OBrQ43nY

Clokx - "Catch Your Fall" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUhhbA-SUkw

Remady feat. Manu L - "Save Your Heart (Laurent Wolf)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCL5k20Hgas

Global Deejays & Niels Van Gogh - "Bring It Back" (I just wanted to post this video...hehe) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cLbDnNcUqg

Peter Luts and Domino - What A Feeling
Kim Leoni - Again
Drunkenmunky - E
DJ Chuckie - Let The Bass Kick
Annagrace - Let The Feelings Go
Cascada - Summer of Love
Bob Sinclar/Pitbull - Rock The Boat
Amuka - Appreciate Me (the crowd went wild at Beatstock whenever she performed)
David Guetta - Love Don't Let Me Go

Too many to list. I would go back as far as 1992 in terms of what I thought should have been hits.

But I'll sum it up as this, I was hoping that the Eurodance wave would have caught on in the U.S. the same way it did in Canada with the music played on Toronto's Energy 108 back then. For those of you that want that taste of what I'm talking about, listen to http://www.djfm.ca/ on Sunday between 8AM - 8PM (Eastern) for the DJFM Flashback Sunday. A lot of those should have been hits.

To be honest...The reason why they were/are not hits...It didn't make the impression of the "pop chart". Dance charts would put them at number 1..Yes it is true.

Watch out BJ Steigner those are fighting words around here. ;D

I actually do agree with you. As much as I like all the songs listed, for the exception of a few, they don't have the formulaic, pop structure that makes it catchy (memorable) enough to be hits. This is why the Rihannas',Ushers,Flo Ridas Pitbulls etc are owning the "dance" sound on the pop charts. It's not that corporate don't understand Dance. They actually do and that's why they get the best Dance producers for their pop acts.

Now THOSE are fighting words! :D

I know we can get into an entire debate on "dance" vs. "rhythmic" here but you do have artists that are pure dance that DO sing, and sing good, but corporate is ignoring them. Let's face it, Rihanna and Usher established themselves as Pop/R&B artists FIRST. Flo Rida did rap. Pitbull MAY be the closest towards starting out as dance by using 75, Brazil Street for "Calle Ocho" but he is still a rapper. They all jumped on to the dance side because it's hot right now. But guaranteed, once this cycle goes they are all going to abandon it for the R&B sounds they came through in the first place.

That's my whole point. The big labels own the dance sound out right now. That's why it's almost impossible for true dance acts to break through,Honestly,I want to see this watered down dance shit die already.

Backhandedly, the one thing that I would have wanted to "take place" was that eventually the people listening to the "big label" sound would eventually crave for more of the core sounds and go deeper. That could have possibly worked out if there were more dance friendly outlets in this country to give that exposure. Not saying "pure dance" at the beginning but a station that would play the "big label" stuff but put it in along with the core sounds.

Just shows the control the majors have over terrestrial radio. There is subjectively-speaking "better" music out there that fits what the masses are currently into but it doesn't get played because it doesn't have major support behind it generally speaking.

Its just like Alternative back in 1990. It was cool then. It was not on major labels. It was rarely even on domestic releases. The same can be compared to "core dance". But then what happened? Nirvana and Peal Jam got on MTV, and suddenly all the Major labels pick up any grudge soundalike Band, labeled it "Alternative" (even though it wasn't....remember, the word means "alternative of mainstream") and made them stars. Kinda similar to this "EDM Craze" (i cringe as i type that) because now labels have taken note of acts like Skrillex, Afrowack, Deadmau5, or Avicii and are suddenly open minded to any rip off Top 40 that borrows such influences. Same with SHM or Guetta....how many songs sound like One or Sexy Chic? The labels are lowering the bar with our music, and being optimistic about it is not seeing the whole picture.

I also find the Alternative = EDM Comparison fitting, because Alternative meant something before the Labels tampered with it. It was Electronic based, stemming from New Wave as opposed to disposable noise by the later rock acts of the 90s. With that being said, EDM is now in jeapordy of its identity. By definition, it was coined as Electronic Dance, but Todays version only includes the same ole overplayed styles that you see booked at these Arenas. What about straight up House or more complex produced Dance? Does everything need to have the predictable synth fist pumping breakdown, build up imitation Benassi jump jump routine? Throw in some car alarms and some cats vomitting (distorted with compression of course), then you got yourself a #1 track on Beatport!

Back to the topic, crying over what the labels sign or push to radio is counter productive. They will always go with what the sheep flock to.

Just looking at the Fmqb chart I see quite a few major label dance artists in the On the chart. A few weeks back Sean Ross who writes a column for radio-info mentioned Dragonette as a potential summer anthem. There is a bit of an identity issue because what is EDM? Some of you dislike dubstep but it's a very hot genre. EDM varies a lot. Look at Deadmau5 calling out DJs. The genre is evolving and changing

Not to step on any toes but I'm not sure anyone can predict what EDM song will be a hit with FM.

I'm pretty sure no one saw Stereo Love, Take Over Control or especially Mr. Saxobeat had that spark to help it crossover. I'm also sure those same people wouldn't have predicted that SHM - Save The World would have flopped, it did flop right?, like it did. Well, on FM at least.

I wonder what Wiz Khalifa did to get "young wild & free" in heavy rotation. Not to mention "Make it nasty" by Tyga.

Anyway, I still say Annagrace "make me feel" should've been bigger. Maybe it was released too early. Maybe Pitbull or Flo Rida should've been on it. Who knows. But it was mad catchy, yo.

I'm going to start a new thread titled "How DID these dance songs become huge hits?"

The first thing I'll discuss in that new thread is "Titanium" by David Guetta ft Sia.
How did it pass? It was all Sia singing by herself! No one even rapped in it!

I can't even predict it! ;D

I remember back when I doubted "I know you want me" by Pitbull and "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga.
