Danny Stiles Double Talk?

Today marks his 85th birthday, as noted in today's New York Daily News.

The radio veteran, formerly heard on such stations as the old WEVD, is now heard on, among others, WPAT, WNSW and WJDM, all owned by Arthur Liu's Multicultural Broadcasting, still playing his standards music.

I couldn't help but call out Mr. Stiles on a quote he gave in an interview with the News.

What Danny Stiles said: "[Arthur Liu] loves this music. As long as he lets me keep playing it, I will."

What Danny Stiles actually means: "Arthur Liu loves the fact that I'm paying him to play my music. As long as the checks keep clearing, I will."

Isn't that the arrangement? Aren't Liu's stations all-brokered?

I have to believe the two are honest to goodness friends. True, Stiles gets his own sponsors for his program, but Liu could very easily fill up the time he hasn't sold on the station (the odd free half-hour, or hour on his various outlets) to the generic real estate, or cure all programs. Instead they just throw on a Danny Stiles hour. ;D

and what's wrong with a "Danny Stiles" hour? The man is a legend in NY radio - and for those kiddies not old enough to remember, he was the "leader" of the Kit-Kat Klub on the old WNJR 1430AM (now WNSW) out of Newark, New Jersey - actually, 'NJR was a part of rock and roll history - iirc, it was the NY area radio station that broadcast some dude by the name of Alan Freed - and the rest is history - anyhow, ROCK ON, DANNY!!

Andrea

When WNJR switched to Adult Standards as WNSW, Arthur Liu claimed to love the format and because of poor coverage in NYC wanted to move the transmitter to the WPAT-930 towers in Clifton. It did happen last year. but only because he lost the lease to the Hillside tower site, long after "Sunny 1430" bit the dust. So it looks like Arthur also talks out of both sides of his mouth.
