Date set for Houston Radio Reunion!

Alarm bells and red flags

Am I the only one in this group who is getting a little uneasy about all the publicity this event is getting? Ken Hoffman wrote about it again today, and I'm starting to think it's getting a little out of hand.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, he's making our reunion look like a big public event that will be open to the general public.

I have nothing against the public -- after all, they are our listeners who have made all of us the living legends that we are (lol) -- but I don't want to spend a Sunday afternoon with the public. I want to spend my day with old friends. Not a crowd of curious listeners who know little or nothing about radio or radio people.

The reunion started out as a private party for any and all the radio people who feel inclined to show up. It's starting to look like something else. Anybody else feel that way? Am I overreacting?
 
The information about the reunion should NEVER have been in the paper...or anywhere else where the information is available to the general public (other than here on Radio-Info, the Blog site, Radio Daily News and other similar trade-related publications/sites).

Josh and I have discussed this problem on more than one ocassion in the past couple of weeks. At this point, I believe the best we can do is have "Security" on site (which, by the way, is the plan) and possibly a uniformed officer, as well. The plan is for "Security," and/or the uniformed officer, to have a copy of the RSVP list with them at the door. If you're not on the list, you don't get in the door. That is why we repeatedly urge everyone who plans to attend to PLEASE RSVP. The plan also calls for having the words "PRIVATE PARTY" on the marquee in front of the venue.
 
It's a shame it has to be done that way but I absolutely agree with it.

We all get more than enough of smiling and rubbing shoulders with fans and listeners at the remotes and public events our stations require us to take part in, like the Houston International Festival, just to name one.

Just once though, ONCE, it would be great to sit and swap war stories with old radio buds, without the fans and listeners around and underfoot. And taking notes on how "old" we all look. Who wants that? Not me.
 
Hoffy was upset that the event was not open to the public. What he des not understand is how much time, labor and money that would cost. But his mentions did help spread the word. We'll be fine, and the number of attendees is lining up about where we figured it would be, and they have all met the criteria and earned the right to attend.

We are slighly concerned about party crashers and have already refused entry to a number of people who did not meet our criteria. But, Tin Hall is big enough where you can get away and hide, or be seen easily.

I would encourage everyone to double check to make sure they are on the list. We will not be running up and down the stairs every 10 minutes because somebody did not sign up and wants to get in.

Anybody know if he's still living? He sure was fun to work with at KIKK back in the 60s and 70s. If he's still above ground I hope someone will let him know a lot of us would enjoy seeing him again.
 
I'm sorry to report that Mr. Thompson passed away a number of years ago...I believe sometime in the 90's. He most definitely was a big part of KIKK back in the day!

As I wrote on the other thread, shortly we will announce a cut off date and time to RSVP. This is not going to be a deal you can just walk up and in the door. If you are not on the list, or a guest of somebody on the list, you will not be admitted. That is the "Private Party" policy of the venue. *which by the way donated the use of the room (a $2900.00 value) at no charge*

Rowdy and I discussed the event as we changed shifts at KILT this evening. I said I would send out a last newsletter either tonight or tomorrow answering any questions about the event and sending along some news that's not for anyone but attendees.

That was the purpose of the newsletter - so we could exchange info without having it appear on a website anyone could read. There has been some concern about it becoming a public event.

I'll admit I was surprised at the number of people who signed up already.

That will also be a place where we can exchange private Houston radio news after the party. There will be some follow up info we'll need to send out and it really would save a lot of time for us to be able to do one mass mailing as opposed to 300 separate emails to everyone.

Looking forward to seeing so many old friends again!
 
Howdy All!

The big day is Sunday, and I thought I'd run down a few things prior to the party.

1> All the fun starts at 2pm.

2> This is a private party! If you did not RSVP, are not on the list, or a guest of somebody on the list, you cannot get in. We have tried to figure out a way to allow 'real radio' walk up's in, but there's just no way. Sorry.

3> The event is FREE, so is your lunch, compliments of The Lighthouse Charity Cooking Team. *I doubt we'll run out, but if you want to eat, come early.

4> Smoking is prohibited inside, but there is a huge covered patio outside if you want to light up.

5> There will be a fully stocked cash bar. That means you will pay for your own cocktails. Tin Hall is not a BYOB, and you are not allowed to bring in your own beer or liquor. *They will have soft drinks for those who do not care to consume. I think there are three of you. :)

6> Don't get dressed up. This is a casual affair. Jeans or shorts are fine.

7> Be sure to sign the guest registry and put on a name tag when you arrive. We want to know who you are.

8> Feel free to bring video cameras, still shot cameras, audio recording devices, whatever you like. If you do not have them do not worry as we will have a pro photographer and video guy on site. We still have not heard from the live streaming guys-but I'll post the URL if we do.

This reunion is just going to be a blast and I wanted to say thanks to Rowdy, Leslie, Andy et all, for the hard work putting this together.

Never would have believed this could be possible, so many faces I just can't wait to see. A few missing I'd like to find. Wish Berlin, the legendary Paul, would be there, a couple a drinks and the stories would flow! Also wonder where Brian Hill is? I know he was doing PR for the Houston Zoo, I haven't seen BK since the KLYX days.
 
I let Brian Hill in on this early last week, complete with a link to the thread on RadioInfo. He replied thanking me for letting him know. Maybe he didn't realize the seriousness of the mandatory RSVP. I agree it would be great to see him again. He and I go back a long way.

Bill Alford is another guy I was hoping would get wind of this. He worked at KNUZ and several other stations. Anybody heard anything about him?

Oh well. Too late now. Maybe we can do this again in a few years so those who miss this one can get another chance.

And while I have the floor, I want to add my personal thanks to Rowdy, LTT, Andy, Kevinc and all the others who put this damn thing together so fast. Do you realize they did this in just a little over two months time? It grew out of some reminiscences Kevinc and Josh were sharing in a thread called "Life After Radio". I went back and found Josh's posting that got the ball rolling on May 14th.

You guys are incredible. The city needs to hire you to stage the next Super Bowl.

Paul Berlin will be in attendance. I'd like to see Brian Hill there, too. I'd like to see Wes Johnson there...and a whole host of others.
