Datz Hits busted and fined $30k by FCC

Why isn't a station as powerful as Hot 87.7 busted already? It's got a 30 mile radius, and I even DXed that pirate station twice from NJ this year.

Our good old handy FCC (Federal Computer Commision), yeah, the one that is trying to take over the Internet almost 10 years after its explosion, saying that Cyber Bullying is "wrong" (WTF?), probably won't take any action on Hot 97 in the near future. As we know, in Boston the FCC doesn't do much about pirates unless they are first adjacent to a licensed station, or are causing good interference to a licensed station. On 87.7 they are not first adjacent to any Boston station and not interfering with much, so I don't see the FCC doing anything for a long time. It's a bad look for the FCC. Things like this just egg on other aspiring pirate operators. As they see it, all they will get is a 'no-no' on a piece of paper or a friendly visit where they tell them to shut it down and don't confiscate any equipment even when it's right in their face. Hopefully with the republicans in office the FCC will begin to better enforce their rules and have a zero tolerance policy.

I haven't seen anything indicating that the political party in power will change things. Anti-pirate enforcement in Boston was no better during the Republican GWB presidential administration or the Romney gubernatorial administration. We didn't have 87.7 yet, but powerful pirates that can be heard all over the metro-Boston area like "Big City" 101.3, "Choice" 102.9, "Vibe" 105.3, and many other lesser ones have been on the air for most of the past decade, many years before our current administrations.

I noticed after typing that statement that I sounded like a Conservative Wing Nut lol. I don't think it is a priority of either political party, or even the FCC :. It's just a hope of mine that with changes in the political scene, this flaw of the FCC is brought to attention and a zero tolence policy is established.

Seriously though, when are they gonna wakeup and realize a 'no-no' on a piece of paper and an occasional 10,000 dollar fine (that these pirate operators usually pay just to get the FCC off their trail) isn't going to shut down notorious pirates that have been in business for years. Or even the small ones that don't fear the FCC.

Wasn't there a thread on here some time back about Big City being off for a few days and then when they returned they said something like no other station could come back that fast from a Federal Confiscation? Was it ever confirmed that Big City's equipment got confiscated?

Damn if there are any 35 watt transmitters for 200 bucks that are in good shape let me know. I'll put a small operation on the old TV audio band just for fun, watchout for 79.9 The Beat ;D The walkman on my iPod can go down to 76.0

I think the Japanese FM band goes down to 76 MHz, doesn't it?

And there's no such thing as a QUALITY FM transmitter for 35W at that price. Maybe a kit on eBay, but those suckers are often of poor quality and put out spurs and harmonics all over the place...including the tower approach band for airplanes, which tends to get you noticed reeeeeeally fast.

HLLYs are assembled, and they publish spectrum analysis in their product sheets

they even show fairly big spurs when operating them near 76 MHz

a bad antenna connection, or cheap chinese capacitors degrading after 6 months of heat could toss the clean signal out the window..

Well obviously not lol, if I buy cookie cutter equipment, I expect to sound that way; especially off eBay. I would never open shop on the AM or FM band anyways, when you can open an internet radio station for the cost of an automation system and server, no FCC to worry about, no extensive maintenance, no crazy electric bill, it's the future of radio... where can you go wrong?
