Dave FM Big 25 of the Last 25

Below listed are the Big 25 artists of the last 25 years as voted by DAVE-FM listeners.

#1. U2
#2. Rolling Stones
#3. REM
#4. Police
#5. Talking Heads
#6. Tom Petty
#7. Bruce Springsteen
#8. Dave Matthews Band
#9. Nirvana
#10. Coldplay
#11. David Bowie
#12. Eric Clapton
#13. INXS
#14. Red Hot Chili Peppers
#15. Prince
#16. Black Crowes
#17. Elvis Costello
#18. John Mellencamp
#19. Duran Duran
#20. Widespread Panic
#21. Sarah McLachlan
#22. Pearl Jam
#23. Depeche Mode
#24. Peter Gabriel
#25. Van Halen

Some of it is really scary. Either PD Michelle Engel is more out of touch with the listeners than is previously thought or the listeners don't know how to count. Case in point, number two is The Rolling Stones. Quick, name a good Stones album in the last 25 years. Sorry, "Tattoo You" dropped in 1981. How about The Police who released exactly one album of new material in the last 25 years ("Synchronicity")? Is that one release so transcendent that it still resonates today? Or can’t DAVE-FM listeners read instructions and count? Me thinks the latter. Broooooce, Clapton, Elvis and Bowie became more mainstream in the last 25 years but by 1982, their best work was in the collective rear view mirror. Duran Duran, that had to be a joke right?

What has DAVE-FM learned from the list? Not much, a glance at what they are currently playing shows that the usual suspects still get play (U2, Coldplay, REM, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, et al.) with little representation from the other Big 25.

Why would they have this Big 25 if not to do free Market Research? Theoretically, the brain trust at DAVE-FM thought would get a handle of what the P1's really want to hear. As of yet, they haven't added them into normal rotation. Though it is still early.

I realize that lists are just a way to get fans talking and this list proves absolutely nothing. I just find it interesting that Duran Duran has so many fans who can’t give up the ghost and Prince has more fans than Van Halen. Neither artist in rotation at DAVE-FM.

#1. U2 (Appropriate)
#2. Rolling Stones (Not even close)
#3. REM (Yes)
#4. Police (Sting, maybe. The Police? Nope.)
#5. Talking Heads (Agreed)
#6. Tom Petty (Sure, why not?)
#7. Bruce Springsteen (Stretching it)
#8. Dave Matthews Band (Sure)
#9. Nirvana (Should be #1 - They killed hair metal)
#10. Coldplay (YAWN)
#11. David Bowie (Because Dave plays a lot of Tin Machine)
#12. Eric Clapton (Teaching whites to rip off blues for 40 years!)
#13. INXS (They choked long ago)
#14. Red Hot Chili Peppers (Same song, different name, for 10 years)
#15. Prince (Yes...heard on Dave FM when?)
#16. Black Crowes (Good, but influential?)
#17. Elvis Costello (Why not Burt Bacharach?)
#18. John Mellencamp (Paper and Fire, man...Paper and Fire)
#19. Duran Duran (Yep)
#20. Widespread Panic (Come on...you're kidding, right?)
#21. Sarah McLachlan (Name anything she's done in seven years)
#22. Pearl Jam (Too high on the list)
#23. Depeche Mode (Ditto)
#24. Peter Gabriel (Eh)
#25. Van Halen (When did this list crazier? Right Now!)

Wilco, Son Volt, The Flaming Lips, The Cure, The Cure, The Cure, The Cure...oh...THE CURE. The Smiths, Alanis Morrisette (Sarah Mac? Please...), Green Day...ouch, my head hurts...The Pixies...Public Enemy...Violent Femmes...New Order...Jane's Addiction...Husker Du...Radiohead...and my last (but certainly not least) addition...The Replacements.

Why the Replacements? They're the best band ever and you're welcome: Goo Goo Dolls, Ryan Adams, Third Eye Blind, Lemonheads, etc.

Wha? No Stones? What's the matter with you... ;)

What a bizarre mix of generic fluff, much from a different time than the very name of the list itself. This list could be the key to understanding Dave's poor ratings, like the Rosetta stone there's something in it's strange writings that tells a bigger story than seen at first glance. How do you get past the fact the listeners chose stuff not even from the premise time period of the question and not even played by the station?
Their fans either have no clue about the format of their station or they're disappointed by the playlist, they might get some Widespread Panic but jones for some Mellancamp. Or maybe they're there for the ' Stones but have to put up with Dave Matthews.
If you read Dave's playlist, it sounds like it will be an exciting station to listen to but when you put your radio there it just seems boring, like they don't want to play anything too enjoyable to listen to and just play it safe. Does the programmer have some childhood religious guilt about enjoying one's self and chooses the more boring songs from an artist? Are the 'fans' just those left unable to escape from the wet paper bag of Z93 classic rock?

Sales Weasel is my new best friend. You sir get a lifetime pass; I will never call you a ****** bag.

Duly noted. Huzzah!

I certainly agree that there are some artists on this list who should not be there, and some missing who should. The one that jumps out to me the mast is Madonna. Love her or hate her, I can't think of another female who has had greater influence on music in the last 25 years.

for the music enthusiasts who like rock, r&b, and pop from the 80's Dave FM is the only choice.
