Dave Matthews Radio 93.3???

The stunting started at 5. At least it looks like "the Bone" imaging is dead.

WXMM 100.5 in Norfolk has spun the format wheel this week. It's currently running classic Chinese hits as "Kung Pao 100.5"...now, that's stunting!

Well Its almost as bad as the bone...
dave Matthews Will give way to something decent I hope.
But it doesnt appear there will be a 93.3 The Ticket.

It won't be difficult to improve upon what was the bone. Obviously Dave Matthews Band isn't for everyone, but they have an enormous number of devoted fans. I've covered a few shows and they generally fill the venue. There are even people that follow them when they tour. Reminds me of a few bands from years back. Maybe they're targeting the right demo for the change they intend to make with this Dave Matthews stunt.

Just another station I'll have to remove from my presets. Looks like Sirius/XM is going to get me as a full time listener.

The imaging says "All Dave Matthews, all the time" - even the RDS message says "93.3 - Your Dave Matthews Station". It got old pretty quick

Just goes to show you, Cumulus was merely waiting for the Cowboys to re-up or to go away before changing The Bone's format. That must be why they kept this dog of a station going for three years longer than it should have...someone must have promised Jerry Jones that the FM side would bring in the 25-54 males that the Cowboys have to attract, and that kept Cumulus from flipping the format until Jerry was out of the picture. Too much coincidence in timing to be much else.

Dave Matthews? Heard of the group but no idea what type of music they play. I can guess it'll be yet another shot-in-the-foot with no marketing, no carefully-defined concept, a PD who got the idea out of a book or a trade magazine article and doesn't know sh!t about programming the forthcoming format, and, of course, they'll again employ a moniker and imaging that's a tune-out factor all in itself. (And that's about ALL they'll 'employ'...Sure, a piped-in morning show. What, were Bob and Tom and John Boy-n-Billy all busy already? They can be had for pennies on the dollar.) And, of course, the Bone-to-Be will eternally be a stepchild to The Ticket and K-Plex...no marketing or prize budget, always in the shadow of the "winners" in the family, and an afterthought for any real investment in time or money by the corporation (I know the feeling...I once worked for The Oasis.)

Whatever the format ends up being, it'll be a page out of the Clear Channel playbook. A cookie-cutter format that's preprogrammed by a national PD, that's already in place on other Cumulus stations across the country. If Alexis is still there come Monday, you can bet that she's either doing it for $6 an hour, or possibly for free in exchange for a couple of spots per hour she can peddle herself! (Then again, they COULD be paying her $12-$15 per hour, but it's only for the 1.5 hours it takes to V/T a 5-hour shift.)

At least there's no one left on payroll over there who can turn the station into their "personal jukebox" again, thank God. The Bone actually had something going those first two months they were on the air (Jan, Feb 2002; I have the proof on tape) until some idiot started tinkering with it, and it's been downhill ever since. How someone can justify 7 years of horrid ratings without a complete format change, imaging change, and a purge of the building...what a mystery in this day and age.

Gary Thompson must have seen the writing on the wall.

Don't like what I've sen of Dave Matthews..... He's one of those "issue" guys...
It was one of his tour busses that got fined for dumping raw sewage off a bride into a river.

I'm as interested in Dave Matthews as I am in Tom Petty, which is not at all.

Huge fan bases ??? Big concert draws ..... I think these people are all in love with themselves, (and not he aritst).... and just use the entertainer as an excuse to have a self-love in.... but, I could have that wrong.

Check this out...

Definately I would say AAA. They do have a AAA station on the books...

Cumulus also owns a tiny triple A station in San Francisco called KFOG. Perhaps you've heard of them. It's only one of the stalwarts of the format. ;D

Like KDBN, KFOG was acquired from Susquehanna.

Unfortunately, I do not believe 93.3. is becoming a KFOG soundalike.

About a week or two ago, Cumulus flipped Rock 100.5 in Atlanta to a quasi-AAA format. In a way, the playlist reminds me of the god awful WRXP in New York, which is the biggest trainwreck of a station in any major market in the country.

Expect to hear a bizarre blend of heritage rock, AAA artists, and "safe" modern rock on the new 93.3. This is what 100.5 in Atlanta is doing.

Terrible choice. Merge was a failure. Zone was an underperformer. KZPS during its experimental phase fared poorly, too.

The funny thing about The Regular Guys coming to town is that they cannot even get good ratings in the their home market of Atlanta anymore. Their return to the airwaves has been a major non-event there. Clear Channel's Active Rock outlet, Project 96-1, is eating Rock 100.5 alive on the young end. CBS's 92.9 DaveFM and Cox's 97-1 The River are kicking Rock 100.5's ass on the older end of things.

Cumulus cannot program its way out of a paper bag as far as rock radio is concerned. WRQQ in Nashville and KDBN are colossal failures. 96Rock in Cincinnati and Rock 100.5 in Atlanta are greatly underachieving, too. Cumulus launched 3 of 4 of those brands within the last 2 years. KDBN was the only one inherited from Susquehanna.

Sounds like an ideal marriage to me! ;D

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

Here's a sample of Rock 100.5 in Atlanta this morning. Sounds pretty good IMHO... and I hate just about everything! ;)

Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

Personally, I could live without the Tom Petty, The Journey and The ZZ Top... ::)

@jeffdfw: If they bring a station like that to DFW, i will be a loyal P1. Finally a station that plays good alternative, AAA type music without all the emo crap. It will sound like a really good college rock radio station...sign me up!

by "issue" guys do you mean he strives to improve our environment? i don't really see anything wrong with that.

and you forgot to mention that once he found out what his tour bus driver was doing, he made substantial donations to offset the effect of the event. (you don't really think he was up there at the front of the bus pushing the button to dump the doo, do you?)

Rover
I'm curious how huge fan bases and concert draws translate to self love in. What people are you referring to, the fans of the group? ???
