Dave Pratt in the Morning...OUT

It looks like Gwen Foster's blog was posted back on December 1st, so it was probably more of a favor to friends than a hint of things to come. This wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though.

David may be out at KMLE...But...His book is flying off the shelves at Barnes and Noble! In fact, since CBS released him this week, the demand for the book has increased.

I wonder if KTAR is eyeing Dave for mornings. He could easily make the switch to talk host and he brings with him a pretty big audience.

And KT'R's playlist is so similar to KMLE's! ;)

Let's count the big salaries at 92~Three: Ned & Connie mornings; Aunt Carlos mid day; Mac & Gaydos afternoons; Crummey nights; Luvable One weekends. Then you have all the bodies in the news and sports departments...Ed Phillips...Mc Bland..Detour Dan...the Master Blogger plus the infrastructure. The last thing TMISU need is more programming expense.

Anyway, Pratt's got two years left on his contract and the Nurse and I imagine if he works elsewhere that money goes poof.

Pratt must have a great PR team. Every TV station in town had a story about KMLE releasing Pratt plus coverage on their website. What about Camelback Jack, Stu Evans and the other that CBS Radio has let go recently? This board seems to be the only place where their stories are being told.

laradio.com (subscription required) included the Phoenix layoffs in its Friday lead
story on DGH being out at KNX. In mentioning all three locals, it gave Jack and
Stu more column space than Dave.

The other local media must still subscribe to the theory that, on FM music stations,
if it's not the morning show, it doesn't count. Unfortunately, it seems the likes of
CheapBS, Cheap Channel and "Fagreed" (thanks, Jerry!) are also on the way toward
"if it's not AM drive, it's voicetracked." ::)

It sure would be fun, though.

How big a deal (local media) was it when the Morning Mayor went from KUPD to KZON?

I would suspect that a Rock-orientated station would pick up Pratt and his people.

For me that was the best era of the Zone for my tastes. Stern mornings, pratt afternoons, and powell nights. Ahhh the memories

It should be no surprise that CBS Radio dumped another higher paid talent to try and balance their books. CBS, like many radio companies, has tunnel vision and doesn't realize that it's the talent that brings in the listeners that allows them to charge the higher confiscatory ad rates.

This reminds me of what Jerry Kraus said when Michael Jordan retired (the second time in 1998); "organizations win championships", Heh, yeah, that organization hasn't won anything since--it's all about the talent, the individuals. Howard Stern carried many bad stations all by himself. It should come as no surprise that a company that thought it would survive just fine without Stern could easily let Dave Pratt walk. Given the fact that country doesn't have nearly the dominance in this market that it used to, one would presume CBS would be smarter, but then again, they decided to bring a third CHRish station into the market, so how smart can they be? Ahh CBS Radio, where coming in 14th is a triumph!

CBS's KZON is'nt doing all that bad...

KMXP-FM C Ch Hot AC 3.2
KZZP-FM C Ch. CHR/Top 40 2.8
KZON-FM CBS Radio Rhythmic 2.7
KKFR-FM Riviera Rhythmic 2.6
KAJM-FM Sierra H. Rhythmic 1.3
KMVA-FM Trumper Rhythmic 1.3

Unless Pratt was losing audience left and right, or a format change is in the works, just how does KMLE cut costs by dumping him with an active contract? Two years is a lot of moola to pay someone not to work.

Like most other things at C(BS) this doesn't make sense.

A contract doesn't mean he'd get all the money as if he worked through it... it just means he gets whatever is in the severance clause. Probably still a chunk of change, though.

I don't get how Tim and Willy are cheaper than one guy... maybe putting together a syndication deal. Didn't they put out a podcast about what a future deal would need to look like?

I just want to remind you guys that in AZ it's a "Right to work" state. NY is the same.. CC reciently got sued over a no-compete. I'm sure that Dave will be compensated. BUT who is the illigal alien in the Mayor's former hot seat?

CBS' new mission statement "we provide the best talent to entertain you that illigal alien smuggling can buy"

Yes Pratt and crew are out. The greatest tragedy is letting Stu Evans go. There is not a more professional jock on the air ANYWHERE than Stu. Larry Daniels once referred to Stu as the most consistent, professional on air person anywhere in the country. With the opening in mornings does leave one to wonder if Tim and Willy are going to be back. It would only make sense, but with KMLE's great heritage I would have to think that some of the famous names from the past might be coming back. Names like Cary Rolf, KMLE's first music director. Cary, like Gwen Foster is known and respected in country radio as being a trend setter. Shawn Holly, former weekender, nights, Promotions Director and PD of KMLE. Shawn's incredibly deep and succulent tones at night would increase your female cume in a book, especially when he read the tag, "bottled by the good guys at Kalil". Ron Green... there's a name that hasn't been hear in a while. Ron did weekends at KMLE under Bob Glasco's direction and into Alan Sledge. Ron could just look at you and you would run out of the studio in fear. Guy Williams, aka Charlie Martinez has spent a lifetime working overnights on KNIX and KMLE. Aside from being a trusted overnight friend he looked exactly like Freddy Fender. Jim West, one of the very first voices ever heard on KMLE when they signed on would be on the air full time at KMLE in a heart beat. There was Jimmy Whittle, a man blessed with a very large understanding of how to relate one to one with his listener and was slotted for middays at KMLE for some time. Amy Klinger, simply known on the air as Klinger could do music logs between the records better than anyone. There was Dave McMinn, currently at KNIX as a sales God but worked production with Steve Wood at KMLE and wound up on the air. He was a true Shaman of creativity when Sales Manager Paul Boyd wasn't bogging him down in with tags. Jeff Daniels, a name that invokes images bizarre sound effects laid down over the beats of commercials. We could even get Taylor and the Bear to do weekend fill-ins. If you had JD Freeman as GM and Alan Sledge back as PD, like would be perfect. Two more that were a big part of the KMLE family in those days was our groupie God, "Its Me, Its Me, Its Tommy C on Saturday Night at the Oasis spinning his own country mixes at a time when it was unheard of. And down the hall to the left our Chief Engineer Eric who kept us on the air day and night. We were by far the best sounding radio station in Phoenix with out thick, tight and rich bottoms and our highs adding clarity up around 12-18kHZ. Eric Schecter was truly the best engineer KMLE Country 108 had ever seen and still the best in the country.

You see, KMLE as a great heritage and with these changes I thought it would be nice to hear some great familiar names from the past. Getting all these great talents who were part of KMLE when they first beat KNIX would be awesome. Yes the staff would have to work for less money but as the station became strong the staff would equally share in it's profits just like in the old days. Now KMLE is being run by two very competent and experienced people in Gwen and Jeff but imagine what it would be like if you could turn the clock back and create radio the way it was meant to be. That might be fun.

Thought KMLE (same call) signed on as a religious station --- way, way back when.

Yeah, I think you are right. KMLE was "Jesus Country" back in the day. ;D

Now here's a funny story about that: Yes, KMLE was contemporary Christian, with the transmitter on Shaw Butte (now a back-up site). The sister station to KMLE was KASA (AM daytimer). The original studios were in a little strip mall on Ray Rd, if I recall correctly, in Chandler.

Here's where it get's good: On the night of October 19, 1988, Shamrock Broadcasting took control of KMLE, and commenced to broadcast from South Mountain, with a New, Clear, Powerful signal. There was one family that was so concerned because they heard the voice computer say it as: "A nuclear powered radio station". As it happened that night, the monsoon was in overtime, and at Midnight thunder and lightning were all around. I wonder if that was a sign from above; after all, here you take a Christian station and make it Country! ;D
Fond memories...
