Dave Pratt in the Morning...OUT

I remember when KMLE officially signed on. I was part of the original airstaff in late 1988. We had Taylor and the Bear (the first one) in AM Drive, the late H. G. Listiak and Becky Lynn were doing news and traffic, I forget who originally was in midday, Jim West did afternoons at first, then Gary Ross was there until Stu Evans arrived a few months later, Stu then picked up afternoons and Jim moved to middays for several years. Carey Rolfe was music director. Yes, Eric Schecter was engineer...! Gwen Foster was a part timer back in the early 90's.
Steve Wood became our production guru.

We had a good staff with J.D. Freeman as GM. I remember we had a client party where we had an actual CAMEL you could pet and get your picture taken with !!! Live Camel's have a distinctive stinky ODOR !!! :)

Bob Glasco was PD....The owners were the Disney family (Roy Disney Jr, Walt's nephew) and his Shamrock Broadcasting. For years the station was consulted by country consultant, Rusty Walker and company.

There was a second "Bear", Barry Michaels that paired with Bill Taylor, then about 1992 Tim and Willy did AM drive before leaving. The station did create interest before officially going on with music with an electronic voice counting down to a new station.....and we had the gimmick of an actual "color radar weather" screen in studio.....we used it mostly during monsoon season !!! Back then, all the music and commercials were on cart !!!! I remember helping cart up hundreds of songs before we hit the air...! We slowly moved to playing music on CD players you had to cue up individually ! I do believe we still had ONE turntable in case we needed it !!!

One of the first big concerts KMLE sponsored was GARTH BROOKS. He came to town on the 4th of July 1991 at Westworld in Scottsdale. A huge monsoon dust storm hit when Garth was on that night.....we lost power for a short while and damn near brought the stage down...! What a night. It was fun radio back then.
 
...and just like 98 K UUUUU PD, Camel Country has always used One Oh Eight instead of 107~Nine.
 
I remember the late 80's and KMLE very well. Even though I was never a true Country fan, KMLE usurped my KOOL listening for a year or two. It helped that H.G.'s son, Hunter, was on my son's Little League team so I caught his traffic act on the radio then his stand-up act at the baseball games. He was quite a character.

Larry Daniels once referred to Stu as the most consistent, professional on air person anywhere in the country. With the opening in mornings does leave one to wonder if Tim and Willy are going to be back. It would only make sense, but with KMLE's great heritage I would have to think that some of the famous names from the past might be coming back. Names like Cary Rolf, KMLE's first music director. Cary, like Gwen Foster is known and respected in country radio as being a trend setter. Shawn Holly, former weekender, nights, Promotions Director and PD of KMLE. Shawn's incredibly deep and succulent tones at night would increase your female cume in a book, especially when he read the tag, "bottled by the good guys at Kalil". Ron Green... there's a name that hasn't been hear in a while. Ron did weekends at KMLE under Bob Glasco's direction and into Alan Sledge. Ron could just look at you and you would run out of the studio in fear. Guy Williams, aka Charlie Martinez has spent a lifetime working overnights on KNIX and KMLE. Aside from being a trusted overnight friend he looked exactly like Freddy Fender. Jim West, one of the very first voices ever heard on KMLE when they signed on would be on the air full time at KMLE in a heart beat. There was Jimmy Whittle, a man blessed with a very large understanding of how to relate one to one with his listener and was slotted for middays at KMLE for some time. Amy Klinger, simply known on the air as Klinger could do music logs between the records better than anyone. There was Dave McMinn, currently at KNIX as a sales God but worked production with Steve Wood at KMLE and wound up on the air. He was a true Shaman of creativity when Sales Manager Paul Boyd wasn't bogging him down in with tags. Jeff Daniels, a name that invokes images bizarre sound effects laid down over the beats of commercials. We could even get Taylor and the Bear to do weekend fill-ins. If you had JD Freeman as GM and Alan Sledge back as PD, like would be perfect.

You see, KMLE as a great heritage and with these changes I thought it would be nice to hear some great familiar names from the past. Getting all these great talents who were part of KMLE when they first beat KNIX would be awesome. Yes the staff would have to work for less money but as the station became strong the staff

Who could predict that JD and a group of scallions could dethrone KNIX.
 
Booker T & the MG's. Just wouldn't sound right as "Green Scallions".

I worked weekends at KMLE in the mid-90s, this post brought back some great memories!
