NOBODY CARES

Speak for yourself. Dave is one of the most respected, most beloved people in the business. He's not only one of the all-time giants of the industry, he has helped discover and nurture more talent than the next hundred people on the air or behind the scenes. Nobody cares? Agreed. Never met Sholin personally, but he was great on air, was an expert in the music business (used to love his appearances on Ronn Owens show), his efforts helped keep 610/KFRC an award winning radio station into the 80s - and he's got a great radio voice.

When/if I get to Bend (haven't been there in decades, but love the area), I'll make sure to tune him in.

I second that! Great guy who's truly passionate about radio. We need more like him!

I've known Dave Sholin since college and worked with him for 18 years. He doesn't deserve the class-less comment from BayInsider above. There might not be anyone in Bay Area radio that has ever had more class than Dave Sholin. And if being a nice guy isn't enough, he also has played an integral part in a lot of San Francisco radio history.

Bend is a small market, the logging and mills are 70% closed and the California retirees have dried up since the real estate crash.

Don't know Dave and his work, but Bend is a nice little town, and hope he does well there. Sure to be less hectic than the Bay Area too.

Dave "The Duke" Sholin is one of the reasons that KFRC became such a HUGE success in the 70's and 80's...enough said.... :D

Anyone know if he'll make the physical move to Bend or if he'll be voice-tracking or doing the occasional commute between his place in Pacifica and Bend?

Dave and his wife are moving to Bend and Dave will work in the same building as with Mister Ed. He sell his house in Pacifica.

But at lot of California folks jump at the opportunity to do radio in small-town Oregon. I've known people who have done it in Newport, Astoria, Eugene/Springfield, and what's that little town in the southwest corner...uh...Brookings. Heck, even cult leader Roy Masters, long a staple of KIEV in Glendale, moved to southern Oregon.

Until he pays higher property taxes and higher state income taxes. Governments have to charge one way or another to provide services.

People make many moves they regret. Bend is not exactly Portland. Of course Pacifica is very rainy as well. I never knew why Thomm Hartman would move from Portland to DC.

David is right. Property taxes are a bit high. I lived in Bend for 2 years. People even voted for more taxes! I think the pitch then was "we have to support emergency services". It's been several years since I left, so I don't remember state income taxes being higher than CA. No sales tax is a huge benefit, especially when purchasing a big ticket item, like a car or RV.

Didn't Pat McCormick of KTVU Channel 2 Fame (Former Weathercaster/Dialing For Dollars Movie) move to Bend after his retirement?

When Pat retired he said at the time, "As Charles Kuralt used to say, `There's a bend in the road ahead -- I wonder what's around the bend?" To me that sounds like a hint as to where in Oregon he planned to build his retirement home.
