David Guetta - Love is Gone - Now #1 on Power 96!

CHRles said:
To be fair, the Dance stations in the States were playing it long ago. Power 96 is a Top 40/Rhythm outlet.

Yea, sorry....I didn't mean to come off as rude....I actually haven't been in the US for almost 2 years now......and even the radio stations here are still playing this track in somewhat heavy rotation......

i think the radio edit used at every other station would have / could have worked on power aswell, i think they added that miami bass / booty flare to it just to be safe, as power is slowly transitioning itself back to dance...

the mixshows on power are also playing dance again, heard call on me by eric prydz saturday night, along with the accapella to everybodys free to feel good by rozella over another instrumental, not sure the name..

with the success of world hold on, and now love is gone... i think will see alot more of dance on power.. i doubt however it will ever be like it was in 1996-2000, as playlist is smaller and repetition is just 2 damn high..

OKay, two things,,,, The station you are calling a pirate on 96.9 in Miami Beach is actually called Radiate FM and it isnt a pirate at all, but a low power FM heard on 3 frequencys in Miami Area, also on 88.1 and 95.3. The 96.9 is the one in Miami Beach, they have 99 watts. I wouldnt really call Radiate FM a real Dance station, they do play alot of Electronica, but also play stuff like heavy metal too.

Secondly, I dont really think Power 96 is shifting itself back to Dance, I think they will probably continue to have one or two Dance songs in rotation at the same time, but I think Power will continue to stay Rhythmic and will probably sound the same way they do now for the near future. Like I said before, power is actually missing out on alot of Dance Friendly hip hop tracks like Rhianna-Dont Stop the music, probably because they are playing it safe not to alienate their P1s Hip Hop kids since they already have David Guetta, Enur, and Pitbull in heavy rotation. I noticed Power dropped Bob Sinclar as soon as they picked up David Guetta, despite the fact that Bob Sinclar was still in pretty heavy rotation at the time.

One thing I think Power 96 should do is dump the Slow Jams (Power Love Hour) at night and replace it with a Dance Friendly mixshow, with some Hip Hop. Power used to have a mixshow every night at 10:00 back in the day before they started that power love hour. They still have a mixshow that airs in the 9 o clock hour after the countdown, but ive only heard Hip Hop during the weekday nightly mix. :p

hey,MWC,don't you think there might be a reason for that?

Clubber has a point - Power 96's nightly mixes were legendary. They used to mix it up all night long some nights as far back as the late 80s. Much of that music was Dance. These days though Y-100 already airs Dance mixshows (no Hip Hop) almost nightly.

u guys wouldnt happen to have any recordings from back then that ud be willing to share? i have a shoebox full of tapes.. just need to mp3 them..

Ive got one tape from 1993 with a mixture of songs from Power 96, Y-100, and even Zeta 94.9. I wouldnt really call them aircheck's though because back then I only taped songs and I would hit the stop button as soon as they started talking. The sond quality is pretty bad too since it was taped off of an old Emerson Boombox, plus the tape is 14 years old.

Ive got another tape from the Christmas break of 1990-91, One of the songs from that tape is a Dance Remix of Janet Jackson's-Love will never do without you. Speaken of which it seemed like back then Power played alot Janet Jackson, it seemed like you would hear a Janet song at least once an hour, but their playlist was huge back then, not like the tight playlist they have these days so it was a mixure of all her hit songs from all her albums she had at the time. Another song on that tape is a Remix, (NOT REALLY DANCE) of Amy Grant's-Baby Baby, I doubt anyone here other than me remember's that song though. Another song they played back then was Enigma-sadness, but I didnt ever record that one. A few other songs I remember from Power back then was Linear-Sending all my love, Maxi Priest-Close to you, and a Dance/Freestyle remix of Real Life's-Send me an angel. Also, one more song I remember from that era is that freestyle song called MARIA, I cant remember who sings it though.

Well yes and no Jimi. They seem to sprinkle in some Dance and Miami Bass during their Drive at 5 mix, so why not at night. :p Y-100 plays Dance all night, why cant Power play a few Dance songs within a 30 minute mix set at night, its not like were asking for underground Techno or Drum n Bass or something, just a few CHR Dance cuts.

There was a Dance/Freestyle remix of Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" in 91? I don't even remember Power 96 playing "Send Me An Angel 88".
As for "Maria", that's a great song from TKA.

Yes indeed, Power 96 played a 1990 remix of Send me an Angel around summer of 91 I believe. The original version was kinda Dancy, but more of a New Wave song, it would have sounded out of place on Power, although Y-100 did play the original I think, but in the late 80s, not the early 90s. Also, WMGI Terre Haute played the same remix of Real Life-Send me an Angel, but it was in the gold selection, cause WMGI wasnt a Dance station until around 1995, when they switched to the Mix FM name, before that WMGI was an AC station as Magic 101, but with the same calls. But BTW, does anyone remember when Amy Grant had a bunch of Rhythmic Dance CHR songs in 91-92, Power used to play all the Amy Grant records back then. Also, Power used to play alot of what was called Extended 12 inch mixes at the time. Some of the remixes Power and other Rhythmic stations would play would be 6 minutes long. You would never hear Extended long versions of songs on FM radio these days, not even on Pure Dance stations cause the playlists are too tight, and stop sets too long. Other songs I remember from Power at the time are Londen beat-Thinkin about you, and A better love, you never hear A better love anymore, sometimes AC stations now days will still play Thinking about you. They also had a Luthur Vandrose song in rotation called Power of Love, I know that isnt Dance but Power played everything back then. Also, remember Heavy D-Now that we found love, Marky Mark-good vibrations, and KLF-3 AM Eternal, and Corina-Temptation.... I could go on and on and on.

I think Power 96 played Corina's "Temptation" long before most stations cuz by the time it charted (it went Top 10 nationally) I dont think it was even on Power 96's playlist anymore.
As for Amy Grant, her song "I Will Remnember You" is a guilty pleasure record of mine. It's from 92, and I remember when I was in New Orleans B-97 played a parodie of it called "I'm A Nintendo Fool" :D
Amy Grant was successful at Pop, AC, and especially at Christian radio (where she was the biggest name in the format for years!). One of her best songs was a duet with Peter Cetera (of the band Chicago) in the 80s.

Your right, Temptation was on Power 96 close to a year before it charted on mainstream Chr, also both Y-100 and Power 96 both played Temptation, but not during the same time period.

But also, Y-100 would play some dance songs that Power wouldnt play, in the mid to late 90s when Euro was hot Power was more selective of what they would play because Power's core sound was still more Freestyle-house-bass at the time. I remember a euro song on Y-100 that the lyrics went, I'll be alright, I'll be okay, As long as I have you, and I dont think Power played that song back then. It seems like Power shyed away from Dance for a short time when Euro was popular for a year or two. Although Power still loved to play records from the likes of Lil Suzy and Collage-I'll be loving you, stuff like that. When artists like La Bouche and Real Mccoy were heating up Power couldnt resist and started playing the euro stuff.

Heh, I remember the song "I'll Be Alright", it's by MTS. Q-102 in Philly was another station that had it in rotation, as did Energy 108 Toronto.

Yeah, also WMGI MIX FM here in Indiana was playing that song, I just didnt remember the artist, but am I right about Y-100 sometimes playing dance that Power wouldnt touch, and how Power shyed away from Euro at first until it blew up on the Chr charts. I have only vague Memories of Q-102,,, thats the one past Dance station that I really know nothing about. I still remember alot about all the other past Rhythmic Dance stations. Hey Chrles, do you remember when KQKS Denver was Dance friendly during a few years in the 90s, KQKS would play stuff like Kristine W-One more try. KQKS is still a solid Rhythmic station today, but I doubt they would ever play another Dance record since they are the Default Urban station in town. The only way KQKS would play any Dance again would be if a Full Fledged Urban Hip Hop station signed on and cleans their clock, which I dont see happening. Denver also had a station called Jammin 92.1 KJMN, with a Rhythmic Dance format around 1996, Jammin played alot of Freestyle and Latin flavored stuff, but at late nights KJMN would go Quiet Storm, Denver after Dark for 4 hours. Jammin 92.1 lasted less than a year before they went spanish, so I doubt many people even in Denver remember them. They had a weak signal beamed in from Castle Rock at 40,000 watts on a short stick. Not many people Remember the old KS-104 playing Dance, and even a brief stint with mainstream Chr, People remember KQKS for the Hip Hop.

But anyway, just because a station doesnt play any Dance doesnt mean its a bad station, its just the reality that alot of markets it just doesnt work these days.

i remember hearing that song on flz (ill be alright) in rotation.. matter of fact i think i have it on an old tape from the mid 90s.. i use to record bubbas show and leave the tape running and its amazing going back and listening to the tapes and hearing what use to be played...

"Love Is Gone" is now also Top 10 at Miami's CHR/Pop outlet Y-100! In fact, it looks like they've played it almost every hour yesterday (all dayparts).
It's just been added to K-104 Poughkeepsie, and...98.5 Kiss Peoria (love this station!)
