DCA Plane Crash Coverage

Wednesday night at around 9PM ET, there was a collision of an American Eagle plane with a Blackhawk helicopter on approach to Reagan National Airport. Because of the location of the crash, coverage began very quickly. Area TV stations had video of the crash itself. Local and network TV were on site within the hour. Local radio (WTOP) was on location and reporting from the scene within the hour.

I have no words. PRAY for the families that have lost their loved ones.
Officials say everyone died. No survivors expected to be found.🙏
Also, multiple US figure skating players have been killed as well as two Russian figure skating champions who had been in the Olympics.

I was switching between local and national coverage, and saw more detailed information on the local coverage. An on-scene reporter for WRC was the first to report that the plane had broken apart. None of the national reporting I saw had that information. The local reporting from WUSA was the first to report that bodies were being recovered. All of this was at least an hour or more before the briefing on the crash. The officials at that time refused to give details about fatalities or if survivors had been found. It wasn't until the Thursday morning briefing that officials talked about bodies and fatalities.

WAMU at some point switched to its regular BBC programming. The crash was also their lead story. Except the news reader mispronounced the name of the river. He called it the PAW-to-mack river, instead of the po-TOW-mack river. Didn't check his stylebook. He then spoke with a CBS Radio reporter, saying that the BBC now has a news-sharing arrangement with CBS. She of course pronounced the name of the river correctly.

Unbelievable! Trump is blaming DEI hiring initiatives for this crash...The bodies are still in the river, and this is the statement we get from our president.😳

Here’s the response the incident should have been directed to these factors from both Reagan Airport Air Traffic Control and the Army base that issued training at the time of the crash. According to this preliminary report Fort Belvoir authorized the Helicopter to Washington DC.

"It had to be a black guy, or a woman, or a disabled person". Disgusting but typical.

Now it's Blame the Helicopter pilot and crew in the first part of the article. However this is a factor for the Helicopter crew end. Then again it's a case of what Fort Belvoir could have done to let Reagan Air Traffic Control know that a Helicopter was near their airspace prior to the Jet hitting them. Expect the political talk shows go all Snowflake with this one. But then again reforms have to happen at multiple angles though once the investigation is completed.

But Hegseth and the Army have said the three member crew of soldiers on the Black Hawk were experienced. The Army said the instructor pilot, who was the designated pilot in command, had 1,000 flying hours while the other pilot had 500 hours.

The helo was above its assigned altitude at the time of the crash. There should have been approximately 200 feet separation at that point.

The helo pilots may have thought the aircraft taking off was the CRJ referenced by the ATC instead of the AA flight.

Really bad idea to have night time training flights cross over the approach pattern to a very busy airport like National.

Aircraft are very difficult to see if over a large metro area at night. Both aircraft were operating VFR (visual).

All the holes in the Swiss cheese lined up. Very sad.

I don't understand why NPR affiliates run so much BBC news. I do understand that the BBC does high quality journalism but the British accent and, in this case, the mispronunciation, make it clear that it's foreign media being piped in.

I don't know about WAMU but here in New York, WNYC even runs BBC News during morning drive, as if they can't get Americans to report the news in the nation's media capital and its largest market. I like England but we don't live there. This is America and in spite of the malicious framing of 'patriotism' by some in this country, I have enough genuine patriotism to believe America's NPR stations shouldn't rely on a foreign nation's news organization to deliver the news, especially in radio's primetime. This is a longtime pet peeve of mine with NPR, or at least the local affiliate in NYC. In addition to what I already stated, it just sounds pretentious.

NPR doesn't relay the BBC. Local stations, some affiliated with NPR, some not, make their own deals. I think it's great. My cable system carries BBC World News and NHK from Japan. I think that's great. Those who don't should tune out rather than get angry.

I agree. The public radio system in this country is completely decentralized and is run by the local stations themselves. It's their choice to run NPR shows or run BBC shows. No one forces anyone to carry anything. NPR is mainly a program supplier just like American Public Media. The only difference is that NPR has responsibility for running the national interconnection system. They have that responsibility as designated by legislation.

I edited two words to clarify, since you seem to want to parse them. And it's not being angry to make the point. Also, BBC News is available to anyone in America who wishes to stream it.

One could say the exact same thing about music. Recorded music is available to anyone who wishes to stream. The reason radio plays music is for the convenience of the listeners and for gathering an audience for advertisers.
