Dead Formats

Given the ratings information today out of LA and NY it looks like the "Fresh" format is in rapid decline. This format only lasted six months. MOVIN is dead on arrival in LA, after two million in spending. Emmis has moved the station to a more oldies/mega sound. JACK also is off 30% in LA, it's biggest market to date. It is always wise to look to other markets to help guide decisions in this market. Those who urged KBKS to flip to Fresh were clearly mistaken. Mainstream CHR remains a viable format genre. The same cannot be said of Fresh, MOVIN or JACK formats, now in hyper decline. Seattle may have unique qualities, but national market format dynamics are still at play here and should be part of any format dikscussion.

[EDIT] Fresh is still top ten in most NY key demos. MOvin in LA is merely adjusting.
PDX and SF movin stations are showing growth. mamma is mad! That is not ya ya good. Movin and JAck
in Seattle are still very much a factor. Seattle is unique in many ways and the movin format here is custom made for
this area and that is ya ya good!!!

[EDIT]

1. Fresh 102.7 declined in New York, but so did "Lite 106.7."
2. WPLJ stinks too in NY so is HOT AC a dead format?
3. WCBS 101 is the main reason why Lite and Fresh are down...plus Z 100 had a strong book.
4. I may not like JACK as a format, but in many markets it is working now.
5. Movin is doing very well in Seattle.

I will disagree with Mammaknowsbest in her comment on the LA Movin....it's just not on life support anymore...the subject is now BRAIN DEAD and they are just looking at where and when they will bury it.

I can't imagine what I said to make people call me names. I find that pedestrian and somewhat amusing. Fresh 102.7 only had four months of growth and three months now of decline. WLTW has had years of success and will need to adapt to WCBS. I truly doubt the Soft AC format is dead based on WLTW's current ratings and the solid ratings of Soft AC stations in multiple other major markets, including the PPM markets of Philadelphia and Houston where it is number one. WPLJ is a poor Hot/AC that has poor music execution and has failed to adapt. HOT/AC stations in San Diego, Minneapolis and even in Seattle perform in the top tier with women 25-54. I doubt the format is dead. WCBS is clear evidence that an Oldies station can survive if programmed well and certainly can impact Soft AC and Bright AC stations. I might add that in Seattle it could affect country. This is clearly a reminder to KBSG to go back to its music roots and execute a solid format. In the top 20 markets, LA had the only JACK station performing on a constant basis in the top tier in 25-54 demos. In most markets it declined quickly after an early launch. Seattle is the best market for MOVIN and it is off 30% from its launch book one year ago. Portland, SF, LA are all non-factors. It is not a viable format. All of this gets back to my original point that Mainstream CHR is not a dead format and KBKS just suffers from poor execution. Z-100 in NY proves the position again.

I hate those butt commercials of Movin' 92.5 (The first one I ever saw was flanked between two LAXATIVE commericals during the evening news - I am NOT making that up!)
