DEAD STATIONS IN MAINE / NH/ VT

MaineDude2007, in another thread said that "most (AM's) have gone silent". I'd like to know where 'most' of these stations are. In Maine, the only AM's that I know of are WQDY-1230 in Calais and the 1230 one in Belfast. Anyone know of any others?

WHWB-AM 970 in Rutland VT.. WBRL 1400 Berlin NH.. 1490 WLGW Lancaster NH.. 1250 WIPS Ticonderoga NY...(That one may be back...).. WHEB 750 Portsmouth NH...

yes there have been. WJSR in Fort Kent and WLVP in Madwaska, i always switch them, and WKZX in Presque Isle on 800 i think. All have been gone for over 10 years at least, well, at least their licenses. To think WKZX i think actually played Top-40 back in the day, if you read my other post then you could see that the new 94.7 in Monticello is going to be playing:

drum roll................. classic country ....................

yea............

WHOU had an AM, WKTJ had AM 1380 (they still ID as WKTJ Farmington, even though their FM is WKTJ-FM)...wasn't there an extra AM in the Auburn-Lewiston area up around 1500?

WHWB 970 Rutland VT was mentioned. I remember it years ago (poss. as a country station) and I think
the antenna and possibly studios were across from Wilson Castle in Proctor (and the calls referred to
H_erbert W_ilson B_roadcasting

I remember WHEB AM as well. I used to listen to American Top 40 on it in Nahant MA though WCAS 740
would splash over it a bit

Maine: WMCS 1400 Machias. WQDY-AM was voluntarilly turned off because of ownership caps when WCRQ was purchased. WBME 1230 Belfast. WLKN 1450 Lincoln. WSJR 1230 Madawaska and sister-simulcast outlet WLVC Fort Kent. Does this one count in New Hampshire? WSCV (original calls) 1050 in Peterborough...even though it was technically moved to 650 with a COL change to Ashland, MA.

1490 WLGW Lancaster NH..

That one has to hold the record for the shortest existence of any station in NNE. Weren't they only on the air for a year or two before going dark? If I'm not mistaken, there's a CP for a new station on 1490 (or maybe 1450) in Lancaster. Given the state of the economy in Coos county, I can't imagine them even billing enough to pay the electric bill.

I'm pretty sure it had gone dark several years before being "moved" to Mass. Talk about a signal-challenged station! 5 miles south of the tx on Rt. 202 and it was getting beaten up by the 1050 in NYC.

WHWB stood for "Harris, Wilson, and Bates" the original partners that put WHWB on the air.. Also for "We Have Wilson's Barn".. The remnants of the tower are still visible.. (It was a self supporter).. The transmitter is still in 'the barn' from what I understand...

Wasn't WHWB on 1000 at one time? Why did they move to 970? I don't think they got any sort of night authorization from the move.
When did they go dark? I'm guessing mid-late 80s?

I recall WHWB definitely being on 1000 through out the 60s and 70s. I believe that it moved to 970 in the early 80s. I also recall that they were still a daytimer after the move, so I'm not sure why it occurred. The last time that I heard 970-WHWB was in late 1986, although I'm not exactly sure when it left the air. The previous signal on 1000 was decent, and was clearly audible in Glens Falls, NY, during the day. In fact, 1000-WHWB could be heard in central Ma, around sunset, after daytimer WLMS-Leominster, also at 1000 would sign off at sunset, about 15 minutes before WHWB would...

Two more AMs: WGUY-1250 Bangor/Brewer, and WDME-1340 Dover Foxcroft.
WGUY quit back in late 70's and I think actually became WMLI-1200..WDME-1340 went off when WDME-FM 103.1 came on about 1980. It's now owned by Stephen King along with sisters WZON-620 and WKIT-100.3

BTW The old WDME-1340 broadcast from studios in an old railroad car for many years, I believe they were located in a field alongside Routes 6/15 and 16 between towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Guilford. That was a long time ago, back in mid-late 70s, so I may be a bit off, but I vaguely remember stopping by and taking a picture of it...Sorry to say it's long gone now.

thanks for correction re: WHWB...and years ago I remember being told about the station's transmitter, etc.
while on a tour of Wilson Castle

How about 106.3 in Nashua? I seem to recall that they were WOTW-FM and went dark sometime in the mid-80s, after the owner lost the lease to the land that the antenna was situated on. New ownership brought back the 106.3 frequency in the late 80s? as WHOB and of course it is now WFNQ.

The way I heard it, the site lease issue (which also included the studio building and the AM tower, both on Lund Rd.) was merely the final straw. The station was operating under some sort of receivership due to being found guilty of billing irregularities in the 70s. The operators were allowed to continue broadcasting, but were unable to make any improvements/upgrades (which apparently including finding a new studio and tower location). I heard all this second or third hand many years ago so it may differ somewhat from the actual circumstances.

WHWB was able to gain a small amount of night power by moving to 970. WHWB was an absolute daytimer on 1000 with no chance of night power being on the same co-channel as the current 50kw clear channel WMVP from Chicago with a directional pattern aimed east at night, booming into New England. Both WHWB and WHWB-FM 94.5 went dark in the early 1990's under the ownership of "Con Brio Broadcasting". 94-5 was auctioned off and came back to life, and the AM was gone for good.

There was another 'quickie' in Rutland that appeared in early 1995 and lasted about a month before the FCC pulled the plug.. This station was licensed to West Rutland as WRUT @ 107.5. This was a class A that originated from Grandpa's Knob. The station was owned by the infamous "Harvest Broadcasting". Somewhere the 'paperwork' wasn't in order there as they say, and the open 107.5A window was closed for good by the FCC.

One more station... an FM in Maine.... WMOS-FM... a 10watter licensed to Morse (Bath) High School. I believe it's toweer site was on WJTO's tower. This station disappeared in the early 90's I think.
