Man, it really is subjective, dudeguy! I'm surprised at how strongly I feel about this.
I just totally disagree that Nirvana and STP should be played on a Classic Rock station. What's next, Pearl Jam?
For whatever reason, I feel as though "Oldies stations" should play songs from the '50s-'70, and "Classic Rock stations" should play songs from the '60s-'80s...maybe early '90s...but anything past '91-'92 makes me squirm! I know that's ridiculous, but I just have this timetable in my head. Beyond Aerosmith & Van Halen in the early '90s....man, I just think that's the end of the line.
I also feel like Nirvana/STP/Pearl Jam are a little too alternative. Even though they were in A rotation on Rock stations back in tha day, I still believe they're alternative/modern rock/whatever-you-want-to-call-it bands that don't belong on a Classic Rock station.
And dudeguy, you're right about Sheryl Crow..."All I Wanna Do" & "Leavin Las Vegas" both came out in '94...THEY DON'T FIT MY TIMETABLE...SO NO, NO, NO!!! LOL!!! ;D
I think we need to honor music in terms of eras. Music from that chunk of time...Classic rock from the '60s-early 90s was very special. It was the foundation for all music beyond it.
IMHO, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a groundbreaking song that signified the end of that era, and brought with it the start of an entirely new era of music (And technology.) "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Nirvana basically started it all, and I believe that's the line in the sand.
