Degrassi

Is there anyone in the know that can provide information on the success of Degrassi on the N? I would imagine it isn't exactly the hit it is in Canada but it is still groundbreaking and somewhat controversial television...

Does "The N" have both the 2001-present and the 1987-1991 series, or just the newer one?
______________

They show the original late nights as "Degrassi Old School." It's kinda funny how Degrassi only airs once a week in Canada and it airs like 6 times a day in the US. I think it's a pretty good show. There's really nothing like it being made in America anymore.

In reality, there has never been any teen drama made in the United States that even compares to Degrassi, either the original series or the Next Generation. Certainly, not the slick, Hollywood-glamorized Beverly Hills, 90210, or even Dawson's Creek, even though I enjoyed the first two seasons of that show. My So-Called Life may be the closest, but ABC never gave it a chance.

My biggest gripe is how the current series has aired on Noggin/The N. The season in Canada has already ended, and meanwhile it will have been four and-a-half months since a new episode was aired in the States when Noggin resumes season five on April 7. Fans of the show who live near the Canadian border, and who can pick up CTV over the air, have already seen the last ten or so episodes of the season. Not to mention the message boards that offer spoilers and episode recaps. But Noggin has split the Degrassi: TNG seasons this way as long as they've aired the show. I'm tired of the reruns and the "teasers" they've been offering these last few weeks. Next weekend (March 31-April 2) will be a Next Generation marathon, like we need another one. And, I hate the "Old School" tag placed on the classic series.

If I had my way, Noggin wouldn't be airing this series. Perhaps it would be on UPN or WB, and maybe (a stretch) the Disney Channel. Now, if Noggin really wanted to be bold, they would air the classic and current episodes dealing with abortion...

I find found the original "Degrassi" to be much better than "TNG".

Can anyone fill me in on the original genesis of the series. I know it started out with "Degrassi Jr. High" then moved to "Degrassi High." It was pretty realistic (as much as a TV show can be).

1: "The Kids of Degrassi Street" (CBC, 1979-86, 26 episodes)

2: "Degrassi Junior High" (CBC/PBS, 1987-89, 42 episodes)
Several actors who appeared in later episodes of Kids of Degrassi Street worked on this series, playing different characters.

3: "Degrassi High" (CBC/PBS, 1989-91, 28 episodes)

4: "Degrassi Talks" (CBC/PBS, 1992, six episodes)
Using plotlines and scenes from Degrassi High, the series' stars, as themselves, talked to Canadian teens going through similar life situations.

5: the made-for-television film "School's Out" (CBC/PBS, 1992) tied up the original Degrassi storylines with a graduation/summer backdrop.

6: "Degrassi: the Next Generation" (CTV/Noggin, 2001-present, 100 episodes)
The central character, Emma Nelson, is the daughter of Christine (Spike) Nelson and step-daughter of Archie (Snake) Simpson, both characters from DJH and DH.

I'm not one to watch a show like this, particularly since A) I'm a guy, and B) I'm in university, but I like Paige and Manny Santos most.
______________

Umm...I think it's ok to be a guy and like two female characters. That's called normal.

Hey, I'm almost 25 and a straight male and I watch it. It's well done drama, who cares if it's about a high school?

Completely disagree here. Considering the show gets no promotion outside of The N, it spreads via word-of-mouth, and word-of-mouth is slow. Degrassi is always gaining new fans and the marathons are a great way to catch them up on the show. I didn't start watching until last year and I loved the marathons because all the eps were new to me.

It's clever though. One of the few instances where "Old School" is used literally. Besides, how else are they going to explain it to the kids who are growing up watching Next Generation episodes?

I think they will at some point in the future. They've been testing the waters lately with their "Director's Cut" Degrassi:TNG episodes that put back parts The N originally censored. The abortion eps will probably air late at night and add a disclaimer or two, but they'll air. I agree that UPN or WB or CW would be a good place for new eps. The N can keep the reruns. Way too risque for Disney Channel though. Can you imagine a show about rape, gay teens, and school shootings on Disney?

I agree. I don't see Disney or ABC Family going after this show.

Personally I watch it because of how they really deal with issues in their own way and doesn't hold back when they tackle them.

As for whether "Degrassi" can make the move to network TV, chances of that are slim to none because of its subject matter and its a show set in Toronto, Ontario, so unless they decide to tone it down and make it americanized its going to be a long time before we see any Canadian Content make the prime-time schedule stateside.
