Delay Of June 12 DTV Transition?

ixnay said:
...I never understood the logic of placing the option of observance of DST in state/local hands.

The law taking effect in 2007 moving the start of DST to the second Sun. in Mar. should have abolished state/local option on DST entirely.

Oops, I guess we have one more derailment. (Hello, Thomas! ;))

The 2007 DST dates change still goes back to the Uniform Time Act--further amending
the 1987 start date change (first Sunday in April) which itself amended the dates as
originally specified in the act (last Sunday in April to last Sunday in October).

The UTA also specified that a state could exempt itself from DST. I believe states
in two time zones originally had to "use it or lose it" statewide, but a later amendment
allowed such a state to use DST in the western of its two zones and standard time in
the eastern area, resulting in the same "clock time." (Think Indiana prior to 2006...
but disregard those five "illegal" counties near Cincinnati and Louisville. ;D)

Well since I "derailed" this topic. I'm getting this back on track. Now I can do more bad train puns, like I must focus my train of thought on the topic on hand.

Except that your "topic on hand" is itself a derailment from the original topic. :D This thread's went off topic on page 2 and hasn't been back on since page 3.

RE: Time zones: Arizona isn't unique. Neither Hawaii nor Puerto Rico observe DST. And anyone who thinks Arizona should be on DST should come to Phoenix in July when it's still 100° at 10pm. Make that 11pm and you'll see why DST doesn't save energy here. I'd heard a rumor that Utah was considering year-round standard time as they, like Arizona are right on the boundary. (The theoretical 112° 30' meridian between Mountain and Pacific runs through the westernmost suburbs of Phoenix, and downtown SLC [111° 54'] is virtually due north of downtown Phoenix [112° 4'].) Is there any truth to it?

On topic: No, there is no political capital to be gained, so there will be no further delay of the June 12 DTV transition. The President and Congress have succeeded in making themselves look like they were looking out for the people on this issue. In many ways, there was a lot of truth to that, as many stations are still experiencing delays in getting the necessary equipment, and the FCC still hasn't approved several post-transition change requests. One issue played up was the shortage of $40 converter coupons. Did the gummint ever start that up again, or was that just empty posturing?

Yes. Congress authorized more money so new coupons could be issued. Additionally, the issued, but unredeemed, coupons could be reissued.

The system worked well initially and also following the revamp.

A local UHF station in the Dallas area (sorry, but I don't remember which one 33 or 27 perhaps), is now scrolling a message that states they will cut over at Noon on Friday, the 12th of June.

I suppose different stations will choose the time of their cutover. Some could cut over at 12:01am on the 12th, and other could wait to cut over at 11:59pm on the 12th . . .

Should be apike in Cable/Sat sales and subscriptions in the next week or two ! :D

I am going to miss DXing TV, but it time to move on , the only station outside my market Fresno that comes in Digitally from time to time is KGET 17 Bakersfield. I on certain days in the past received analog Sacramento 3,6,10,13,19,31,40 ,and 58. Bakersfield17,23,29, and 45. San Jose/Monterey/ Salinas 8 and 11. San Luis Obispo/Santa maria 6 and 12. have on rare occations got Los Angeles 2,4,5,7,9,11, and 13 and San Francisco 2,4,5,7,and 9 and Santa Rosa 50. Well like I said it time to move on with a better picture. I say farewell to my DXing stations.

Driving home last night, as well as looking out from my balcony, I had NEVER seen so many of those darn Comcast trucks before in my life! They were in front of homes, businesses, clubs, and in and out of my apartment complex....everywhere.

Damn! I wish broadcasters were even half as smart as the Cable shills.

BTW, I was talking to the apartment manager yesterday. She said Comcast just hit us with an "unbelievably huge" increase on Bulk Cable rates. ::)

I've DXed plenty of DTV and will likely have even more luck after the analogs go away.

But look on the bright side you can still DX nightlight stations.

Good to look at the bright side of things. One door closes, another opens! :D

I'm in Houston, and will keep an old portable B&W TV around to look for analog tropo reception out of northern Mexico, as well as ionospheric skip from elsewhere in Latin America. Much easier now that the low band V's are empty in this area.

2 of the Bakersfield stations KERO 23 and KBAK 29 are 100 miles away at 7000 ft elevation and always came in Fresno with a good signal, KBAKs Digital signal shares ch. 33 with a low power analog in Fresno, and KERO moved to Ch. 10 and can't be picked up with a good VHF/UHF directional antenna, they do have a CP to double their power ,not sure if it's going to happen 6/12. I hope ch.33 moves to a another channel, and some other stations I DX could come in when the analog is gone.
