Depetro asks Buddy to Marry him!

When JD left WHJJ, he set in motion its destruction. The station scrambled to recover. It couldn't.
You're right about his show four years ago. I was a Depetro fan and often went after Yorke.
NOW, it is amazing ! I find myself thinking Yorke is 100% better. I never thought I'd be writing this!

As silly as this may be. :-[ Depetro is acting like Buddy's long lost campaign manager, which we know isn't the case. What's to say JD is not in "talks" with WHJJ to get a piece of that "more than 6 figure" salary. JD wants to be the big kid on the block, now he will be in Buddy's shadow. Instead he grabs a piece of what HJJ was willing to offer Buddy and departs PRO for the old stomping grounds. Would PRO care? Probably not Buddy just slips into Depetro's slot. Win win. I would not be surprised to hear JD is back at HJJ. Anyone else??

No I really wouldn't be surprised if HJJ got Deptro back. He's not exactly doing gangbuster Radio at WPRO. I don't think they would cry if he went away. Unfortunately PRO fails to realize that they have shot themselves in their own foot. They are partially to blame for the loss of interest in Depetro. They are busy telling him what he CAN and CAN NOT say at every fork in the road. You can't kill a guys creative drive and then expect good radio at the same time. A watered down Depetro doesn't fly. He was successful at HJJ because he could be himself and could do basically whatever he wanted too. But now WPRO put a muzzle on the guy. It's impossible to bite off a big chunk of ratings with that thing on? So this may be less Depetro's fault than I had originally thought. WPRO needs to realize how they are playing a role in this whole thing.

Sky, when did you start getting brought in to aircheck sessions at the Trail?
Another point of view to think of....was JD REALLY doing gangbusters at WHJJ or was WPRO at a disadvantage b/c Kass was doing cute fuzzy bunny radio and John was the only one doing anything 9a-12p?

In response to wknd92, wasn't Depetro on during afternoons at HJJ? So that would have made Rush his competition. Maybe I'm fuzzy on Depetro's exact hours. But I do remember that his cable Simulcast was on from Noon to 1 PM. Rush had great ratings and from what I recall Depetro gave him a decent run for his money.

Secondly.... I don't have much faith in Program Directors. They don't ALWAYS know what's best. I hate to always bring up this name..... But he's such a perfect example. Howard Stern was told by various PD's that he should play more music, that people didn't want to hear so much talking, that he was no good. That he shouldn't even be on the radio, He sucked... bla bla bla bla bla. Guess who has egg on their face these days.

Sally Jesse Raphael. Another perfect example. She was fired from something like 18 radio jobs. I don't have an exact number, but it's probably on Wikipedia if you care to look it up. She got the same treatment. PD's telling her that Radio and Broadcasting in general just wasn't for her. Well guess who had the last laugh.

Being a program Director entitles you to a lot of different privileges. But Broadcast history has proven that one of those privileges is also the opportunity for you to be very wrong about lots of things! The day that you blindly accept a PD's personal opinion as being FACT is the same day that you should just walk out of the building and buy an Anthony Robbins book. It's clear that you need a self confidence boost if you can't realize that your PD is probably full of of sh*t and doesn't have a clue as to what he or she is talking about.

OOOOOOO....I found that nerve.
Sky, all I'm saying is that you have no idea what John is being told to or not to talk about and he may have already been losing his steam when he was up in beantown. I never thought his show was any good when he was on WHJJ (wasn't he on 9-2 or 10-2?)

The other thing is that there seems to ba a kind of "consensus mentality" or "herd mentatlity" among programmers. Talk radio seems to have developed a really narrow, ideologically-based focus, be it right wing, or liberal, and shows that veer from the "formula" are now something of a rarity.

I wonder......in today's climate, if people like Howard Stern, Sally Jesse Raphael, or WOR's Joey Reynolds were just getting thier start, could they even get hired to do talk?

LOL.... Ok that made me laugh. I used to hate you "wknd92." But for some reason I have grown to like you. You make a lot of sense. So don't ruin it! ;D

Oh... three great hosts. I like them all! The only one I have never spoken with is Sally. She is also probably the only one that wouldn't have any problem getting on the air Today if she was new to Radio. She has never been a risk taker. She's a very soothing host to listen to. She is very non-threatneing. There certainly is nothing to be scared of when hiring Sally. She's harmless. There are plenty of hosts across the dial who are harmless. She fits right in.

Joey is a bit more creative. It seems that the radio business is a bit scared of the creative types. The more creative you are, the more management is scared to hire you. They think you are going to do off the wall radio. So he might have a bit more difficulty in getting in if he was new to the scene. But all in all he's still pretty tame. He's spontaneous, but it's in a harmless way. No bad language and nothing outside of being rated PG13. Funny story about Joey, He wanted the job at WNBC so bad that he knew he had to stand out to be noticed. So he went into the building one night and Nailed a pair of shoes to the Program Director's door with a note that said "FILL THESE SHOES". He ended up getting the job! Sometimes it pays off to be a nut.

Howard is a whole different story. He had trouble back in the day and he would have more trouble than ever right now getting a job if he was an unknown. The Radio atmosphere of today is totally inconducive for a personality like him who is just starting out. Now the Broadcast industry is shaking in their boots thanks to people like Janet Jackson and Don Imus. They woke up the FCC to the point where station management is unwilling to take a chance on shock jock types that they have never heard of before. Things need to calm down a lot before the next Howard Stern can break into the business. More than likely the new generation of shock jocks will start off in Satellite Radio, become successful and then transition to Terrestrial Radio where companies will pay them handsomly to tone down their acts a bit. Look at Opie and Anthony's transition from XM to CBS Radio as an example of what's to come.
